Wonderful video, Deena. You look fantastic and are an inspiration. What I've learned in my late 50's is that it just takes a lot longer to recover from my runs. I can no longer run every day, I have to take every other day off. And my legs hurt me a lot after a run, despite proper stretching. Aging is very humbling for life-long runners and I have to constantly remind myself I'm not a 20 year old anymore. Wish I was!
Same. If I had known the value of shoes (income wasn't there) perhaps my knees wouldn't be so damaged now. I have 70% cartilage in one knee and zero in the other so my workouts are on the treadmill now. I bought a True 800 treadmill and it's been a lifesaver for me. Logging miles and happy with the results now at 52.
It's like you read my mind, because I used to be the same way. I focused on my time. But now I focus on getting stronger. I don't even use a watch anymore or stop and drink water. I don't know if you don't do that, but it's like you read my mind because I am getting stronger and faster. Good job keep at it 👍
Deena, what a beautiful and intelligent way to view the plight of the aging runner. As a devoted runner of 41 years, at 73 I'm dismayed by the degree of slowing I'm experiencing. You really hit the mark with your thoughts on "quality in everything we do ". I will embrace the notion. As well, I love the concept of being the best version of my running self. Thank you so much.
you will end that marathon poppy i am 27 and i was paralysed for 5 years now i can walk and breath normal and i watch people who fight aging and inspire
Well said! Hit 70 years old in October and do not plan to give up running. Learning to put relaxation into my run to improve distance. Good luck with your adventure!
Thanks for this. I'm 50 and after yet again a keen injury I am now back up and running after 3 years off. I run 2 marathons since (not race but just in terms of distances) and I regularly run between 100- 120 km weekly. I never felt any better.
Congratulations for your video!! Respect everyone doing hard job! and much more hard job is to checking and doing everything for our healthy life as many years as possible, My intention run successfully many ultra marathons more than 100 yrs old🏃♂️
Thank you for doing this video. I am 70 years old runner and never never run on hard surfaces unless it is a race. It has saved my running career. I do not know why this is not talked about for older runners....It is so hard and challenging to run on grass but I have very little soreness the next day.....
Now 72, I have run Boston, NY, Denver and more marathons (2:49). Started triathlons at age 62. To minimize ankle (and other) weakness and pain, I found that alternating Power Walking (13min/mile) with quality fast short distances, swimming, and minimal weights, has kept me going. "Be not afraid to not run" !
@@natethetoe386 I an 74 and am retired from a software company. I am VERY offended by your comment a year ago that "No 72 year old knows how to use UA-cam." Very very rude and condescending.
I like what you said at 1:40. I have used mental relaxation back in the 1980’s and 1990’s and starting to get back into it. It’s amazing what it can do! Thanks!
Okay--Deena-let' clarify---#1everyone is old---even my five year OLD #2--everyone ages- unless they die #3- Entropy & gravity are continuously kicking your butt-unless yr on Mars! #4-Age is a matter of the mind--if you don't mind, it doesn't matter. #5- everyone is an experiment of one. *Did I hear you right? 140 miles a week....my god! 🙄 Thats incredible....how do you come over fatigue?*
Tip #1. LSD is the worst exercise a person can do if their goal is longevity.

True, even better run trails, preferably a bit technical. Flat running just gives repetitive strain injuries
