There's a bigger record store down the street from there called Magnolia Thunderpussy. Used to visit both in the mid 90s . Columbus has everything you just need to know where to look.
I used to hang out at Used Kids in the late 80's when I was going to Ohio State University. Great to see that they've grown and are still out there. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for checking out this video that turned out to be a bit of an experiment. I used a DJI Osmo Mobile 6 (phone stabilizer) and a film editing app for the first time. And I hope to get better at both in the future.
People often talk about Tangerine Dream in terms of their soundtracks. Most of that material is nowhere close to being as good as their studio work. Albums like Phaedra (1974) and Rubycon (1975) contain some of the most eerie or just downright creepy pieces of electronic music ever put to record. They need to be talked about more on SoT.
I can’t get out to the record stores for a few reasons so it’s always fun to live vicariously through videos like this. Nice to see SoT content like this, cheers for the video Jamie!
Ah Rubycon, my first TD purchase back when it came out in 1975. I happened to have played it just a couple of days ago. I still love that period of TD.
That was a lot of fun, including the little bit when you were driving through the snow. It’s always interesting to me to see what different places look like 🇬🇧
Nice video, Jamie. I wrote about Used/School Kids last month on Pete's daily show concerning stories about favorite albums. I have not been there in years. Ir definitely has more product now than when I was there. A room was devoted to stereo equipment then. Hopefully, Mongolia Thunderpussy is also doing well. I enjoyed that store the last time I was in Columbus.
One of my favorite local shops. I also love Elizabeth's records for older, classic vinyl and RPM (especially the giant stack of cds.) Used Kids is always my go-to shop for RSD releases and unique/oddball releases.
Coincidentally, I got a Tangerine Dream too (on CD) the last time I went to Used Kids. That was a couple of years ago - I should go back. Enjoy Rubycon!
I am a Columbus native and have been shopping at Used Kids since 1988 when I started college at Ohio State. Love this place. Great overview. I'm mostly a CD guy these days and I LOVED your suggestion for switching the 45s with the CDs. That would save me so much time. But Greg's not a believer in the 2nd coming of CDs (which is already happening due to crazy vinyl prices).
More videos like this! Cool record store... I'll check it out next time I'm in Columbus. If you're ever in Pittsburgh, there are a wealth of great record stores here.
Hey Jamie. Be looking forward for the episode. Always heard so much in the years about the store . Hadn't gotten over to Columbus to visit it. So much to music up in the capital city and places and such to experience music. One time saw The Stones in 97 at Ohio Stadium All the best to us of Ohio. TC friend.
Love this type of content and love me a record store as well. Bet those watching that also love record stores got butterflies when you panned the store for the first time as I did.. this should be up a lot of people’s alley on Sea of Tranquility.. Just saw a Kraut divider in the Garage section - I’m from Astoria, Queens born & bred, represent!! - great stuff!
last time i was in columbus was the late 80s...i discovered a used record store near the university called 'magnolia thunderpussy'...i remember purchasing a used copy of rory gallagher's 'against the grain' there...
I was a student at OSU back in the early 1990s. I used to go to the High Street location store across from the campus and get a lot of good stuff cheap. Bought the 1994 Motley Crue self-titled as well as a bunch of alternative/grunge for like $2 to $5 a piece on cassette back then. Also found a lot of rare glam rock that wasn't available in the bigger chain music stores such as Media Play.
If I ever get to Columbus, I'll definitely check this place out!! I like that they still have stuff seperated by Genres. Makes it easier to find what you're looking for. I'd make sure I had nothing else to do, so that I could spend a few hours in there!!
That post-punk section is glorious -- I don't recall any record store, even Amoeba or Rasputin in their heyday, with such a large selection of that genre. I JUST wrote about Rubycon for my upcoming Fester's Lucky 13 for 1975! -- After the runaway success of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells (1973), Richard Branson signed German kosmische pioneers Tangerine Dream, funding their acquisition of the latest and greatest analog synthesizers and making sounds that no one except perhaps György Ligeti had imagined before. While fifth album Phaedra (1974) is considered the band's pinnacle of the Berlin School of electronic music, creating layers upon layers of atmospheric textures from a variety of devices, including Edgar Froese's trusty Mellotron, Chris Franke's moog and Peter Baumann's organ, prepared piano and arp, Rubycon is an extension of that peak, with one track divided between album sides. I can imagine their practice space looking like a lab out of a sci fi film, with a side hustle in ghost hunting.
Very interesting Jamie. Good job with the stabilizer. Only thing I didn’t like was I couldn’t thumb through the stuff. 3 hour drive. I see a road trip in my future.
Hi !! Thank you, for this video !! I really enjoyed it !! I love to go record and CD shopping !! Did they have, Robert Plant ‘ Fate of Nations’, record ? It’s my favorite, Robert Plant, album. I really want it for my collection !! Take care. 🎤🎸🎵🎹🥁 Life is better with music
Man, I haven't been to Used Kids in eons! I need to get my ass over there again sometime. Good call on that Tangerine Dream LP! Rubycon is one of their best albums. If you like some serious electronic music, you'll like that one. And regarding the Clockwork Orange soundtrack, I highly recommend that you find the alternate version to it. That LP was pressed in 1972 on both CBS and Columbia records. That version contains the complete original score performed by Walter Carlos. It's also on CD as well.
Destructor !!!! Clevo Natives on Auburn Records !!! They opened for Megadeth at Olde Brooklyn Tavern Auburn Records had a great WUJC presence too hosted by founder Bill. Breaker & Purgatory out around that time tooooo🤘
As much as I hate Ohio State, I have to go that record store the next time I'm in Colombus. I've been to the zoo where Jack Hanna was the director and zookeeper, and he also did some of his shows like Wild Countdown.
Cool video, thank you for posting this Jamie. I can u derstand dividing rock and metal from jazz, blues, soul, etc. However, I never understood the rock and metal subclassifications; put everything that's rock in a rock category and what's metal in an all metal category and let people go through it.
There was a record store called School Kids. They were in the same building. They sold new merchandise. Used Kids sold used merchandise. School Kids went out of business but Used Kids survives.
Check out the Used Kids website: www.usedkidsrecords.com/

@seinfeld8812 Magnolia has nowhere near as much vinyl as Used Kids. However, they do sell a lot more new CDs. And they have t-shirts.
Congratulations on finding that Tangerine Dream! I love that album!
I used to hang out at Used Kids in the late 80's when I was going to Ohio State University. Great to see that they've grown and are still out there. Thanks for the video!

It was fun and different for the channel. I hope you enjoy that Tangerine Dream album. It's the one that got me into them.
Thanks Jamie! it was fun!

Hey Jamie, I would love to know which film editing app you used. If you could let me know, that would be great. Is it Power Director? Thanks

Great video Jamie. Took me back to my youth in the UK when I spent hours in record shops.
Awesome Jamie!!! I live in Wooster Ohio!!! I might have to check out that store!!! 🎶🎶🎶
Love the tour Jamie.Your so lucky to have so many independant stores. The nearest one for me is an hour and a half away.
That was a lot of fun, including the little bit when you were driving through the snow. It’s always interesting to me to see what different places look like 🇬🇧
Thank you Jamie for a very cool tour of this record store. Some many sub-genres of music to explore and expand musical horizons.
Nice video, Jamie.

Love this format, love Jamie solo. Management: to your attention.
Great video! So jealous of such a great store.
Nice video Jamie very interesting store thank you for showing us.
And interesting choices.
That Tangerine Dream is a fantastic album
One of my favorite local shops. I also love Elizabeth's records for older, classic vinyl and RPM (especially the giant stack of cds.) Used Kids is always my go-to shop for RSD releases and unique/oddball releases.
Cool video Jamie. Looks like a great store.
Cool video that. Always good to see Paradise Lost on SOT 🤘 Albeit very briefly 😁
Noticed your drive down Hardy Parkway. I'm on Indian Creek Court. Haven't been to Used Kids in years. Nice Video.
Great job Jamie u even make going through records fun
Very cool video. Wish I lived closer, those "never ending" boxes of CDs, man I could spend a couple hours.
Queensryche in the HAIR METAL section? Someone's playing a trick, there! 😂 Maybe Geoff Tate went in for a bit 😅😅😅
How cool ! Thanks Jamie !😅
Coincidentally, I got a Tangerine Dream too (on CD) the last time I went to Used Kids. That was a couple of years ago - I should go back. Enjoy Rubycon!
I remember that place! They first opened when I lived in Columbus.
Nice store! I might have to take the trip down from Cleveland some time. Thanks!
Hell yeah, Tangerine Dream!
That place is huge ! I could spend all day there.

Great job!
I'm in Cincinnati and recently started my vinyl collection. I'll check this place out soon.
My daughter lives in Columbus. I have a trip to make next time i visit!
Thanks for the tour. A very cool spot. If im ever in the area I’ll definitely stop in.
This makes me wanna drive there and visit the store - too bad it's 300 miles away lol But that looks like a killer store, thanks for sharing!
Nice video Jamie.😄👍
Great Episode. We have a few in Oregon that are great House of Records in Eugene Oregon, Music Millennium and Crossroad records Portland.
Cool😎👍
Looks like there are some cool stuff at Used Kids Records!

Excellent job Jamie ..looked like a great place to shop

Jamie. Loved the tour. Go back / do more. Thanks for your time 👍💯
Thank goodness for the college town record shops. In Ashland we have Southern Oregon University. Also home to the Music Coop and Diana's Records.😎🤘
I love Used Kids!!!!
That's not something you should say out loud when people who don't know the record store are near 🙂
Cool place. One thing about CDs.. theyre alot easier to scan thru than records. Cassettes too. But, it would be nice if they were A-Z.
I used to live in Columbus back in the eighties. Over near Whitehall.

Nice tour of the record store . nice work with the cam
Rubycon is my favorite TD.
Also the one I haven’t been able to find yet on vinyl.
Lock your doors Lazlo.
I would sit there all day going through those CDs!

will have to stop in when I go to Sonic Temple in May.
It's almost in walking distance
Hi Jamie I like your T-shirt that was my first album with Jethro Tull back in time here in Sweden still like this album today
Amazing place
19:01I see Città violenta (Violent City) Soundtrack by Ennio Morricone. Probably a reissue from Italy.
Pete in the house at my neck of the woods. Welcome to the Buckeye State, Pete. OH---
Pete wasn't there
I’ve been going there since it was on high Street. I think the first time I went there was 1993
Very interesting Jamie. Good job with the stabilizer. Only thing I didn’t like was I couldn’t thumb through the stuff. 3 hour drive. I see a road trip in my future.

Life is better with music
CD's just don't sell anymore according to most of the record store owners I know. People pick up 7" singles for their jukeboxes.

Rubicon by TD ? Yes !!!!!
Destructor !!!!
Clevo Natives on Auburn Records !!!
They opened for Megadeth at Olde Brooklyn Tavern
Auburn Records had a great WUJC presence too hosted by founder Bill. Breaker & Purgatory out around that time tooooo🤘
Bill Peters founder of Auburn Records
Purgatory lead vox is Jeffrey Hatrix later founder of MushroomHead
Breaker was awesome too
It’s pretty steady Jamie.
We are the old guys now..
We used to go to one called Moles on High St. Do you know if they're still around?
It's no longer there.
@Jamie.Laszlo thx
Jamie…you need them to start a “douche rock” section!
I just looked this store up and apparently they robbed an old man’s storage and stole all of his records and memorabilia. I’m fucking pissed.
Oh, geeze. They weren't involved in that.
As much as I hate Ohio State, I have to go that record store the next time I'm in Colombus. I've been to the zoo where Jack Hanna was the director and zookeeper, and he also did some of his shows like Wild Countdown.
Green Jelly dropped a new song on youtube in December btw
I will not be searching for "used kids" anywhere on the internet.
Hey Jamie, you’re taking a page out of Brendan Snyder‘s book, but I like it

Small world… Jimmy Turri.
Does the old Agora/ Newport still exist?
Yep.
Do a Midnight Oil episode.
Do all streets in America LOOK EXACTLY THE SAME??
What a horrible store name
It's been called Used Kids for 40 years, now. There may have been a reason for the name with the original owners.
There was a record store called School Kids. They were in the same building. They sold new merchandise. Used Kids sold used merchandise. School Kids went out of business but Used Kids survives.
@@Jamie.Laszlo I hear it as Used/Kids Records not Used Kids/Records. Semantics is important!
@@aldebaran4154why punctuation matters! 😂😂

Damn didn't know you were from Ohio!
I moved here from Pittsburgh in 2000
Not for me this content. Brendon Snyder does it already. We don't need all to be doing similar things.
But Brendon isn’t going to a record store in Ohio…
@@seaoftranquilityprog Exactly. That's why you're going the distance.
@ Stop sucking up. Jamie went to a local store. WOW.
@ Stop sucking up? How about you grow up?
