Thanks so much for this. I had a screw which had come out and was rattling around inside. Successfully stripped down and removed. Confess I stopped once I got it out but working perfectly well without. Didn't want to push my luck!
i've had the same problem for a while now.. finally decided to DYI... was that loose screw deep in there? hopefully it hasnt been scratching up something inside.. either way, theres loads of dust in there i want to get at too. Glad yours worked out.
Word of advice for those of you who is gonna do this. When removing the top 3 screws (For whatever reason),when you place them back BE CAREFUL NOT TO STRIP THE PLASTIC THREADS THAT THE SCREWS,SCREW IN TO. I think this might have been a factory defect for me but just ONE of the holes were much more brittle and fragile then the others. Even with extreme caution,i still somehow managed to strip the thread on one of them. So now my Lens only has 2 screws instead of 3. But hey, least i can identify it now if it ever gets stolen and i find it again :^)
Because you missed the bit out where the focal insert come out I've broken mine, there is a part fell off that I don't know exactly where it goes, it's the bit on the bottom right of the screen where you are messing on with the focal bit near the end.
I'll try this on one of my old lenses first. I'll need to lay everything out in sequence of removal, but it looks as though, if you take your time, it should work
Is there some reason that rather that the coma producing music you couldn't give a verbal tutorial? Doing so might just make this an informative video vs. the hey look what I can do video that it is.
How does one put the glass piece *back* onto the lens via the 3 primary screws? The aligning mechanism is rather tricky. Does the red dot have something to do with this? Is a special alignment tool required? Kind thanks
Recuerdo que una vez mande ese mismo lente a garantia de canon por un problema de un salto al hacer zoom, gasté en paquetería y me lo regresaron y la falla ahí seguía 😠
it is great but somedays ago my lens 18 135mm lens staplizer had failed please kindly tell me what are the causes of it and how to fix it thnks for your help
its great that you were able to find a job with such high skill required, despite your inability to speak. You should have an MC or someone do a voice track, it would be a very good video then. As is its just frustrating .
Howdid you get the part between 12:07 and 12:14 of? I'm trying to repair my mom's broken lens (the manual zoom is stuck, the lens wont turn back inside after zoomed). But i don't see what you did and i cant figure it out by myself...
I'm wondering the same. Did somebody get the answer. I'm disassembling a 18-135 IS STM, and at the helicoid barrel I saw a MORTORQ screw, so I stopped there because I have no such bit (tool), so I don't know if I really need to release that mortorq screw to get to remove the helicoid barrel. Any Idea or video showing how to take it apart? Thanks
At this point you have to remove the big rubber ring outside of the tube. Push the ruber ring upwards, then underneath is another screw you have to remove. After that turn the tube. In my case 2 lose screws fell out what was blocking the lens all time. Carefully remove the plastic ring upwards and a contact slider with 5 little contacts on it fell out. Looking closer to it the two screws before held this thing in its place. I got it back in, fixed it with the screws who fell out and its working again. Not such a good lense when two screws inside comes lose. Make sure you secure the screws with locite or at least a little touch from your wifes nail enamel to secure them forever.
Great video HollywoodAMcom. I'm wondering how did you get to take apart the helicoidal barrel at ua-cam.com/video/CL3EBqQ2CnY/v-deo.html I'm disassembling a 18-135 IS STM, and at the helicoidal barrel I saw has a MORTORQ screw, so I stopped there because I have no such bit (tool), so I don't know if I really need to release that mortorq screw to get to remove the helicoid barrel. How did you umount yours? Any Idea or video showing how to take it apart? Thanks.
Although not seen with the naked eye there is dust flying around everywhere and you will introduce dust inside when you open it, I believe respectable lens brands do it in special rooms where dust is reduced to a minimal amount. I believe they also use powerful light sources checking for dust constantly with magnifiers so I don't know, maybe as last resort I would open it but only if it had bad fungus.
Regarding the first step of prying out the piece that has all the text. What is that piece made of? Is it a sticker? Thin plastic? Because when you put it back, does that thing really ever look the same again? I'm worried about marks and creases created by the act of prying. Please advise.
Something is rattling around in mine, very strange. However, after looking at the video, I think the only thing I‘ll do is remove the dust from the inside front element :-)
you can use double-layered Fixing-Tape to organize screws in the order you removed them. If you want to reassemble, you have the exact order you removed them, just in the other direction ;-)
maybe one of the cables wasn't re-attached well.. not sure. but i'd recommend restarting from the beginning and seeing if there's anything that wasn't reattached perfectly. good luck!

Thanks man. I cleaned some fungus in the front element. And now it feels like its new.
Cheers!
Thanks so much for this! I was going to buy a lens wrench to clean some fungus but it doesn’t look like I’ll need one. Thanks again!

Thanks for this guide. I had to remove the outermost lens, because there was a speck of dust on its inward face.
Can you explain how to repair and fix focus for canon lens 18-135mm usm .. not stm
Hi, my lens can not focus at infinity when zoom over 100mm both auto and manual focus but it can focus objects at shorter distance (say
I'll try this on one of my old lenses first. I'll need to lay everything out in sequence of removal, but it looks as though, if you take your time, it should work
now put it back together
Uh, okay! Easy. Wait, not for you? :/ gts

Is it so hard to hold it in frame?

How did you get a "broken" cable? Normal use wear and tear? Meaning if I use mine too often I might get this problem too? Canon QC sucks!

@M. M. Thanks for UA-cam reply, l appreciated that. It is a Pitty that the STM has a special screw and hard to find the MOTORQ bit here.
Thank you, I was able to fix my lens.

The way you pricking out the flex cable (5:47) using screw driver tip is so risky you might damage the cable.

What size screwdrivers did you use?
thank you!~
Are all the screws the same size? Do you have any recommendation for managing screws when the project is cylindrical?

I did it. the video was so useful, it helped me to clean and to fix something but now, it won't focus when full zoom in. :( any help?
