Ngawi (Javanese: Hanacaraka: ꦔꦮꦶ, Pegon: ڠاوي; Ngawì) is a district in East Java Province, Indonesia. The capital is Ngawi District. Ngawi Regency is located at the western end of East Java Province, directly adjacent to Central Java Province.
It is bordered by Grobogan Regency, Blora Regency (both in Central Java Province) and Bojonegoro Regency to the north, Madiun Regency to the east, Magetan Regency and Madiun Regency to the south, and Sragen Regency and Karanganyar Regency (Central Java Province) to the west.
The word Ngawi is derived from the Old Javanese word awi, which means bamboo. The word awi then acquires the Ng affix indicating that there are many bamboo trees in this area."[3] As with the names in other regions, many place names (villages) are associated with the name of plants. For example, Ngawi refers to a place around the edge of Bengawan Solo and Bengawan Madiun where there is a lot of bamboo."[4]
The Ngawi region became part of the Majapahit Kingdom on July 7, 1358 AD when Hayam Wuruk ruled. This information is mentioned in the Canggu Inscription which is dated 1280 in the Saka calendar. Ngawi's status at this time was an autonomous region in the form of a village with the main task of managing river crossings.[5]

The location of the Madiun Regency Government Headquarters is in Caruban City, which was once the seat of the former Assistant Regent (Kawedanan) Caruban and previously Caruban City was the center of government of Caruban Regency during the royal era based on existing history.
The appointment of Caruban because of its strategic location and the presence of the Regent's office and Regional People's Representative Council as well as being the Ngawi-Nganjuk traffic lane, so it was made the capital of Madiun replacing Madiun City. Caruban has the art of dongkrek, and has specialty foods, namely brem and pecel.
