    I went to a local fair just because I was driving by. They had a hot dog eating contest and it was $5 to enter. My wife and I entered just to get a few for lunch and support the town. There was one guy that didn't want a chair to sit in, and wanted 6.cups of water. He ate the meat first then the buns, dipping them in water. I simply ate at my normal (for me) speed (which is a little fast). After the second plate I realized I might be able to win. I ate 16 hot dogs in 6 mins and won. Then went on to win a contest where you only have to eat 1 donut, but it's hanging by a string, and you can't use your hands. I still look at my little trophy and smile some days. 😂

      I myself and my child and early college Years was a competitive eater. The entry fee was very cheap, and I got to fill up on a very limited budget. I actually won quite a few number of competitions too. It wasn't so much about the prize, I just wanted to not starve. I once entered a last person standing all you can eat hot dog competition. For over 8 hours I continued to eat hot dogs continuously. I just didn't realize that one of my competitors was consuming these hot dogs hands over fist. Unfortunately they ran out of hot dogs, and had to declare a winner prematurely. Of course they blew me out of the water, almost consuming two times the amount of hot dogs I ate. I consumed an ungodly amount of hot dogs, but just wasn't enough. And this is all because I was tall and skinny. In fact, I was well below my standard minimum weight for a guy.

    Out of curiousity, has the concept from the food shrinkage theory been applied to the records? Have the hotdogs always been the same size, or are they shrinking every so often? Maybe 74 hotdogs of last year is the same volume as 50 hotdogs from 10-15 years ago.

    I feel like low to zero percent carbonated acidic drinks like coffee, lemonade, or flat soda would be the best dunking option to water. As someone who has eaten a lot of burgers in my life, i know coffee and flat soda can make a bun soft enough to swallow with no chewing with one sip, and help the stomach break down the food faster. But, i think we would need a competitive eater to try using those to see if it would really work.

    • @icarus4302
      @icarus4302 14 днів тому +2

      The issue there though would be the carbon, carbon is very heavy in the body, especially the gas of the gut. Although yes, that is where burping comes from, plenty of carbon still remains after burping, and that time spent burping is gonna cut into your time.
      I'm no scientist by any metric, but as Mat discussed, liquid is sort of a double edged sword. In theory you could fit MORE hot dogs without liquid, but probably not in the time limit of 10 minutes. However, if you DO use liquid, it'll take up too much space in your stomach.
      It's why people are so impressed with competitive eaters, they're constantly breaking science, and then science has to play catch up to figure out how they did it scientifically, just as a new record is set.

    Video idea: I'm sure you've seen some of the lists making the rounds on social media recently of the number of food processing disasters and poultry cullings in the US from the last year or so. Would you consider making a meta video about these lists? Obviously the poultry cullings are probably due to the bird flu outbreak, but the rest of the list does make for a chilling read (even if official sources say nearly all the disasters are accidents, it's still creepy). Has there been an increase of industrial accidents in food production/processing/storage etc recently? Was there some regulation change, or side effects from losing workers to isolation policies? Or is it "business as usual" and people are just suddenly more aware of supply chain issues now that there are bare spots on the shelves and are making up theories out of boredom or something like that?

    The drink at 10:58 should be orange juice....
    My mum accidentally found a cool hack for buffets, drink orange juice becuase of how acudic it is it will break down the food faster. I thought it was bs but I tried it one time having churrasco and I could eat twice the amount I can usually stomach. Probably with that in mind 114 could be doable for someone of average build. Maybe... I'd have to test it to be sure. It just wouldn't taste very nice.

    • @OtakuWrath
      @OtakuWrath Рік тому +8

      I'm sure anyone eating competitively are not thinking much about the taste, After 20 hotdogs you wouldn't want to look at another hotdog but then you eat another 20 hotdogs and then you decide to just eat another 20 for good measure

    • @rogerdodger4212
      @rogerdodger4212 Рік тому +7

      The problem here is that the acid in orange juice can also cause acid indigestion. Perhaps a bit of orange juice could be used to increase the rate of absorption of the food but the question was “what liquid doesn’t add volume while improving viscosity of the bun?”

    • @Redhollow
      @Redhollow Рік тому

      For a 10 min challenge it's probably not going to make a difference in terms of digestion. What orange juice COULD do though is trick your brain into thinking it can eat more than it actually can through your taste receptor.

    I remember in 2009, my high school had a competitive eating contest with hamburgers. The burgers were like Big Macs. I had 7.5 of them in a 32 minute lunch period. Apparently, according to a friends little brother, my record still stands and the only person to get close threw up at 5
    When i did it, i remember my metabolism just kicking into high gear after like 3 of them. It was like my stomach was burning them off just as fast as I was eating them. I remember that not even a class period later, I was hungry like I didn't each lunch at all.
    Edit: noticed a typo that said my lunch period was 22 minutes, it was 32

    If a competitive eater used something that makes food move more quickly through the digestive system (like a laxative or something spicy they could add to the water or hot dogs) would it help to free up enough space fast enough for them to be able to eat more in the time frame they are given?

    • @jessicastjames6202
      @jessicastjames6202 Рік тому +5

      That's not how laxatives work. A laxative adds water to your poop to help it move out of your intestine faster; it doesn't do jack squat to the contents of your stomach. Also I don't know how spicy water would work at all ...? If anything it would actively make it worse by irritating your throat and stomach lining, which would make you significantly more likely to throw up (and iirc in eating contests, throwing up = instant disqualification).
      Even if there was such a thing, promoting the abuse of drugs/medication as a means to set a new record is not acceptable. It would make using said drug into a hard requirement for competing at all, and that would destroy the bodies of competitors very quickly. (Look up laxative abuse; it literally kills people.) With competitions like this, either you do it clean or you don't do it at all.
