- There is a huge difference between being a good writer and being an effective writer. Essay writing takes a lot of practice and patience, which is scary for most because there's so much pressure to perform well on them.
In this video, I'll break down all the strategies which will help you write an effective and well-structured essay, from writing an introduction and conclusion to using quotes correctly and ensuring your arguments are well-formed and comprehensible.

This is a very helpful video. I'm studying undergraduate as a mature student, and I tend to get very overwhelmed and unsure how to get started with writing my essays. A couple of times I've fallen into the trap of doing a lot of research upfront--just reading articles for days and then when I come to do the writing I find that I have to do research all over again because I don't really have what I needed to write the essay, so I'm changing my sources to different ones as I write. It's very exhausting and yet confusing. I've written a few decent essays by now but I still don't have a clear view of the process, which causes so much anxiety. I will try applying your tips and see how that works out.
literally working on my essay planning with this playing in the background, basically crossing out my ideas until i get to a very specific point. thank you for your advice, as always super helpful!
Best of luck with your essay! I'm glad this may help (:
You're such a pro you make it sound easy. I'll save this for later tho, I'm sure it'll help
I really hope it helps! You can do it, you're more than capable (: Best of luck
Really wish I came across this in my UA-cam recommendations during the start of my dissertation process...
I handed in my dissertation on The Madonna/Whore Complex in theatre on 18th, which I wrote out 4 days in advanced, and a severe lack of quotes... needless to say I ruined my chance at a 2:1 🤦🏻♀️
So many people, including those who have been in college for years, don't know how to write an essay and I always find that shocking, I actually learned to love writing essays (I'm a history grad and so that makes sense) and I rather miss doing all the research necessary for my essays. Your advice is wonderful, all I can add is to try to really enjoy your topic. Choose your topic carefully as it will require you to become enthralled with it. Those essays which fail miserably are usually those that the author has done without any heart in it.
Thank you! I am taking composition 101. It has been over thirty years since I had to write academically. My course is online, and my professor is not lecturing. I feel lost. Your videos have been helpful.
Hi Cinzia! I like how practical your advice is! I wish I had known this when I was still studying myself! Hell, I could have even used this in highschool come to think of it. Good point on the introduction, many people seem to loose their head a little (especially when not familiar with scientific articles), the same goes for defending your argument (step 4). It is all about temperance and pertinence in a way... thank you!
Thanks so much, Luke! Really appreciate you watching and commenting (:
In the online uni I'm going to, we don't write essays, however we do have something similar writing and discussion assignments that are peer reviewed(which adds to the amount of stress), and they are all due within a week( or 3 days for the discussion assignments), so I think I'm going to have to incorporate the write as you research technique to make the work a lot easier for me.
You have no idea how grateful I am for these contents. I'm only in my first term of the first year of my undergrad and it's been eight years since I've graduated from high school so everything is new to me. I need a lot of work to improve my writing and my overall strategy regarding it, so I will definitely incorporate everything in this video. Again thank you so, so much for these videos.
It’s so funny, I found this video when I was looking for tips on reading historical sources. Not what I was interested in at this very moment, but I’m so glad that I still watched it anyway.
The idea of having clear-cut stages in essay writing made the whole process feel quite overwhelming to me. Like I‘m supposed to read paper after paper and take notes for days, just to go trough everything over again to construct a more or less coherent line of argumentation and then spend a few days mostly just writing? It has never worked like that for me and I‘m so glad that I finally realized that this was a kind of mental roadblock which I can just walk around by working in a way that feels more manageable and natural (to me).
I feel kind of stupid now, especially because writing has never really been an issue for me in the past and I really enjoy reading most of the material that is relevant to the subjects I study. Sometimes when I‘m trying to focus on reading, I get so overwhelmed by all of the thoughts I have that I need to write everything down in order to get back on track with reading. Used to think of that as being super unproductive, even though ultimately I often ended up basing large parts of my essay on those kinds of notes.
I think in the future, I’ll probably just try to write my essays in chunks and piece them together out of that, even if I end up having to rephrase everything later.
Whoops, what I initially meant to say was just thank you so much for making this video, it’s incredibly helpful. Most of the videos I have seen on topics like this didn’t even make one remotely valuable point. Thank you, really! :)
I never gave it much thought, but I realize I was the sort who wrote their undergraduate essays as they researched. Once wrote 3 essays the night before and during the day they were due.
Edit: Don´t ever do this if you don´t want to cry.
I'm well out of school, and only recently realized that there are people who don't write as they research. This is the strangest confirmation of that xD;; Anyway, really great video as always! I've been wanting to get back into reading and writing more, and have considered writing essays as a mental exercise, so this was really nice to come across ^_^
Good to hear from you, Cinzia! I no longer need to write the articles you’ve described, so this video makes me a little nostalgic
Thank you so much, lovely! Hope you're doign well (:
This is Amazing Thank you so much.
Ah the video I wish I had seen when in full time study. This information plus being told to be authentic and not strive for original prodigy stuff as an undergraduate got me through!

All of them.

You're welcome! I hope it helps, thank you for watching (:
this helped me a lot
Incredibly happy to hear it!
This was amazing and you are amazing!
Awww, thank you Joanna! I'm glad you found this helpful
Seems like a good idea to write as you research, but how do i do that if i don't even know what the point of my essay is? xD Like what question i want to answer or what argument i want to make..
How long, if done efficiently, should an essay take(3000 words let's say) to write? They gave us assignments in week one (!) of a conversion course , and I don't know when is the best, smartest time to start. We have til mid December.
I would get a usual 3K essay done within one week. Though I ddi once write a 5K essay within three days for my masters and still got a first. It all depends on how efficiently you research.
I am obviously so late to this but you didn't talk about coming up with your own essay question, could you do a video on that? :)
I feel like I’m being yelled at
thanks very much, this is very helpful
