  • How Fish is Made is a free 20-minute flopping simulator about a sardine wandering through a creepy machine. Dark, grimy, and outright insane at times, it examines player choice in its own wild way, shining a spotlight on whether we actually have agency in the world of games. Will you go up or down? And, more importantly, does that choice even matter?

Kinda don't like how all these videos about How Fish Is Made analyze the "This is a test of conviction." part, but completely gloss over how the same fish who makes the speech asks if you only believed him because he was a fish in an imposing room.

This popped up in the sub feed. I watched the intro, left to play the game, and came back after hitting the finale.
    Thanks for this!

For a moment I thought this was one of those videos that describe irl things in gamer terms. I expected a full report on how fish anatomy is a horror on itself, not this.

I'm surprised you didn't discuss the ending part, I thought that was a pretty moving monologue.
Dunno if discussing mechanics was that useful, given it was pretty straightfoward with it.

Great video. I really do feel like rather than mechanics being the language of games, I think it’s interaction. That, to me, is what separates video games from every other medium. Most mediums are straight linear experiences without interaction, they will go on with or without you. But even if you’re just going in a straight line in a video game, you still have to push the button. Anyway, I’m going on a tangent. Lol

ah yes, "video-games without interraction", or as i like to call it "the triple-A ""cinematic"" experience"
i fucking hate theses "games", because let's be real, they're not video-games,
99% of time they don't take any advantages of their mediums, they're just glorified movies with "interractives" button prompts with stories that probably got rejected by holywood.

@@Rise65487 I honestly agree with you. When people were raving about games like Last of Us and Uncharted for basically being “good movies,” not even amazing movies, it kind of killed gaming as a story telling medium for me. At least from a triple A perspective. Because they have all of their priorities backwards (including the people who consume it). Oh well. We still get great experiences from indies or ballsy AA game companies. We’ll see if more come about in the future.

@@ComposerKuandohan yeah i share the exact same feelings,
i think the last-time i was impressed with a game using well the medium to convey a story was with the game called "Gris".
the gameplay isn't exactly perfect, but the game tell you a story without having to say a single-word, all through it's gameplay and environnement.
it's incredible how theses big triple-A cinematic-"games" miss the fucking point of video-games in the first-place,
well i say "miss", but it's not that they "miss the point", they just don't care as long as it sell.
and very clearly there's a huge ammount of peoples who aren't exactly interested in video-games,
but are willing to consume it as long as it has a narrative that would easily fit into some blockbuster hollywood movie

Don't know that I'll give it a shot, but it certainly seems like an interesting experience. Reminds me of a number of games that get covered by horror/mystery gaming channels.

visually rough? it is stylized, you probably said something interesting about the game but i dont feel like lestening anything else if you know -that- much about videogames

well i actually end up watching the whole video. 2:00 thats not the game's ultimate thematic goal, you can choose it to be, but its not, it is just an interpretation, the game itself says so. I thought it was cool bc i choose UP and if it rlly was a test of conviction i did pretty well, and me as an average player i would never waste my time analizing this game not even as an intellectual recreation, instead I would just read something. And yeah games create an ilusion of choice, and it is a really interesting topic, but just some of them do, there are others where your desicions ACTUALLY do matter and makes the diferences, by different endings or because your decisions create your own story, anyway i think talking seriously about it is like doing a serious criticism about how magicians tricks us into thinking their tricks are real... and thats kinda the whole point for them
Also i dont understand why talking about mechanics in a review about *this* particular game, i think no one would discard this game for that reason bc people know what they are getting in to beforehand, i mean it has extremely positive reviews on steam, thats impressive
6:36 oh my god you really do NOT know a sinlge thing about videogames, why are you even making a review about this game?? go back to CoD or Destiny idk
i don't know if i should keep lecturing you but im gona teach you something else
if you want to be really "pedantic" and thorough, and make an ACTUALLY GOOD and comprehensively review, you could said the """"sluggish flopping"""" is a very good animation and its a creative way to make the player model move, and meaby it is a ludonarrative and a diegetic element to transmit a message and evoke sensations to the player. And thats an opinion i could respect, but im not sure about it, i think it got a certain charm and i did enjoy moving by flopping.
But FIRST you gotta knew SOMETHING about any part that involves making videogames, for example "the mechanics" DO NOT define videogames
6:44 Exactly, there is anything to argue about the game's mechanical ambition beacause there isnt any (the "desing side of the coin" is the only side thats relevant in this game) you absolutely missed the point of this game, and therefore of *any game* that is not """"mechanically complex""" like CoD or something.
Im watching the video again in it is weird, anything of what you said makes any sense, the game does not examine anything, its not that deep, and of course words have (underlying or not) meaning
"How fish is Made is extremely cognitive" ??????? do you even know what that word means? "It speaks more than many might assume" um of course? it is the first game you ever played? or is it even the first story you ever analize?
it is so weird i wonder where you came from
