Flowering Bonsai from Nursery Stock: Complete Repotting
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 сер 2024
- It's time to repot a flowering garden centre shrub into a shohin bonsai pot! One of my favourite trees, I carefully work the roots. I'll choose a bonsai pot. Finally, I finish repotting by securing the tree in its pot and filling with bonsai soil.
Playlist: • Nursery Stock Shohin B...
The tree is Berberis thunbergii atropurpurea nana, purchased at a garden centre in roughly 2017. It is a slower growing dwarf variety, that already had some great movement in the trunk. The first year I pruned out some structural issues. Year two, the tree was bare-rooted and planted into a pond basket training pot. In 2019 I attempted to stimulate new roots to improve the nebari or root spread.

@UCf5gQjtjNmsLYAcxAH4Pbuw I have some small seedlings and another nursery stock kojo no mai. Prune in summer, seal all wounds, don’t use copper wire (I’m told) are all the tips I have at the moment 👍
I am a total beginner and have watched already many of your vdeos which I like a lot. Alwyas a good and clear explanation of everything you do from which I can learn a lot. Thanks.
You're very welcome!
I'm here two years later and now 157K subs. Good job.
I do like your video. Especially the way to tie down the root by using stick was brilliant . I learnt one tech from you. Thank you
Thank you for watching!
Hi Darren. I’m just getting back into Bonsai after a break for many years. Recently found you on UA-cam and am enjoying the quality of your videos, also the fact that you’re offering beginners and more experienced Bonsai growers sound advice and tips. Keep up the great work !
Thanks Stuart, appreciate the kind words. I’m no expert, just sharing as I grow 😊
And now you have over 13000 subscribers. 👏
🥳
Congratulations on 3k subs. I enjoy your videos and your bonsai projects. Thanks for helping educate me on my bonsai journey.
Thanks for the kind words Tim
That's a lovely shohin, I really like the trunk flare sloping down nicely into the fine roots. Great work!
Thanks very much!
Congrat's on the 3,000 subscribers! I'm happpy to counted amoung the group! Cheers, Dick from Vancouver.
Very nice, I've got a soft spot for Berberis despite those vicious barbs!
Thanks Tom evil but cool aren’t they!
good choice on the pot! I agree with your pick. best pot for that tree
Thanks very much 👍
Best video yet. Great tree first, great pots, great recording, great angles, great commentary as always. Great everything.
Thanks for the kind words :D
Beautiful pot!!!and super lesson for me as a beginner! thanks!Nice work!
Glad it was helpful! Just bear in mind that it was a heck of a root reduction, only possible because the species is strong, and there were plenty of fine roots. Thanks for watching, Nicoleta
What a gorgeous tree....thank you for taking us through the process.
Thanks for watching 😊
Great tree, great video! Nice to see the Mirai training put to action so professionally. 😉
Thanks for watching! For sure, huge fan of Mirai 🤘
watching at 11.9k subs. you deserve so many more subbed last night and i cant wait to binge some more. fantastic work keep it up!
Thanks 😊
Nice idea with the wood to hold in the tree 👍👍👍👍🌲
It was a bit OTT but did the job 👍👍
good pot choice. The bamboo technique was new for me. thanks
Thanks 🙏 I feel like the bamboo tie down is a last resort to be honest - there must be a better approach for this scenario...
Ukeitupmike ,,, fish tank clear air hose also works well.
I had to do a repot on my berberis darwinii before christmas and the root pad looked exactly like yours, so I trimmed it. It’s doing really well. They root so well. All the cuttings I took last year are also still alive. They are interesting trees with miniature holly-like leaves so even spikier than the common barberry.
Ah yeh I’m familiar with those, I’ve not been brave enough yet though!
Gro Bonsai they’re not so bad. Leaves have stayed on all winter too, I’m thinking of using it as my Christmas Tree in future, maybe get some little leds to decorate it! Lol
😂
Love this tree. The buds look like you are in for awesome growth this Spring. The square pot is cool and i think a hreat choice. Thanks for the great video Darren. Cheers.
Thanks for watching 😄😄 I just took some photos and we have some flower buds too 😊
@@grobonsai yes!!! 🙌🙌😁
Congrats on the subs, you definitely are on your way. Rightfully so. Great channel.
Thanks very much!
Excellent class of haw to prune roots. Thanks.
I’m Happy to help. Please remember not all trees can survive that much root pruning!
Quite good video ! I enjoyed watching it. Nice tree, great roots. 👍
Thanks for the kind words 👍
good choice on the pot, spot on for me!
Thanks for watching 🙂
Hi, would you mind doing a video on how to get and prepare the moss before using it for top dressing? Thanks!
I'll see what I can do! Sorry again about the delay replying
I'm quite new to your channel, but I must say I really like the content. The quality of the video's is high as well as the sound. I love that you use multiple angles, so we can see everything you do.
Congratulations on the 3000 subs, it's well deserved. I hope your channel keeps growing (just like your bonsai)!
I really like this little tree! That's nice progress for only a few years of development. When you got it, did you just hard prune it? Did you have any foliage to work with, or did you have to wait until it back-budded?
Also, the trick with the bamboo sticks is really clever! I'm totally going to use that!
Anyway, keep up the great work!
Hi, thanks so much for the kind words I really appreciate it! All of the main structure was already there on the tree, I needed to only remove unwanted branches and place some wire. It was a very lucky find 😁 The nebari has needed the most work but really this tree has pretty much bonsai itself! Honestly I’m not a fan of the bamboo tie down, I feel like I’m missing a technique... but it worked as a last resort!
This barberry is going to look amazing in this pot, especially in autumn. I have a red dwarf-barberry but it's way bigger, massiv better said and it is going to be styled this year. Sorry, I don't want to mock you but I had to smile about you using 8 wires to secure this little thing! :P Keep the videos coming! Greeting from Germany!
Thanks 🙏 haha it’s ok I laughed at myself too - it’s all good fun 😅
I am so please to see you use a Berberis for a shohin. I used a ordinary one many years ago, and that did turn out nicely. I have to wait a couple of more months before I can start bonsai work again.....
Thanks for watching! I usually have to wait at least a month before repotting, but everything is starting to grow early this year..
Thanks so much for these videos
Glad it helps. I’m going to make more with more details for starting from scratch
@@grobonsai oh thanks!! I already have a big shopping list and four pages of notes just from tonight! love from Australia
Well deserved 3000 subs. Great videos.
Margaret Sims thanks very much 🙂
Great channel, good vieuwer Angle. Nice detail 👍
Thanks very much 🙏
Hey,it looks good. Stay strong.
Thanks for writing
You just sold me a burburis, after I said to my wife I wasn't going to buy any more haha
Haha it never ends
Love the channel
Thanks so much
You have so many nice trees. Can we have a tour of your collection #love bonsai
Sorry I missed this, it's in the pipeline, stuff keeps getting in the way but it will happen this summer
Looks great mate congratulations on 3k.
For tie down I would of used aquarium tubbing.
Comes in many different sizes
Thanks 🙏
I was with the taller green round one
Still got sleet up here on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors. Though we had some sun for an hour today.
It’s a nice pot that, Tomas Gramming. Our village is cut off by floods now, south Worcestershire 😬
extra thumbsup for daughters.. i have a little girl too. she makes minecraft "bonsai" for me.lulz
Haha that’s awesome. Does yours get involved with the real trees? Had youngest removing flower buds lately 😊
@@grobonsai she does. had her using the spray bottle and watering the other day. she loves to pick her favorite veggies out of the garden too. we also plant and grow all kinds of flowers. its nice to get to share that with our chidren.
Sounds great, moments to treasure
Very nice video, your technique is spot on. I imagine you a Mirai live member. very nice pot and amazing root system.
Thanks, yes but I don’t join live due to time zones.
Killin it, looks great. 👍. I also have a sweet tin full of moss lol. And as for a better tie down technique, I wouldn’t have even tied it down. There was enough roots there it should be stable enough, but that’s me. I know most people like to be safe, but it looks like what you did was sound
Thanks mate
Hi, another great video ! Thanks for posting . Do you mind me asking whether the tools you’re using were a set , or did you buy them individually? And obviously where did you get them from ? Thanks 😃
I buy my tools individually, as I felt the need, the Japanese tools from kaizenbonsai.com
@@grobonsai thanks Darren , I’ve looked at Kaizen and Herons , but I’m not sure which are the right ones ..
Great video and tree. Have you considered removing the long straight branch and make the tree out of the shorter branch. This would make it appear more chunkier give more movement to the tree. Just a thought. It looks possible in the video but in reality it may not. You still have a fine looking bonsai as it is.
Thanks Brian, yes definitely a possibility, that would put it into the mame size rather than small shohin (not that it really matters either way).
Interesting video. Thanks.
Thanks for watching 🙏
Nice! You've a new subscriber
Thanks so much!
two little questions Darren, I live in Spain, here the weather is a little hot than in UK, should I defoliate my berberis now? Or it's better to let the leaves fall by themselves?
And what is better for berberis akadama or akadama and kiryu 70-30?
Thanks u very much
The leafs can be removed when the normal colour has gone on a majority of leafs, the edges will start to look brown. Any sooner does weaken the tree a little. I use 100% akadama and being more moisture retaining, I’d use the same in Spain. But experiment and let me know! Thanks
@@grobonsai Nice, thanks you very much! I will coment you!
Good choice of pot. Beautiful tree. Well trained. Wonder whether tree could be tilted slightly to the left, where the apex is little more in a center position. ( However this cold be decided later, during development. ) Really like the development of the roots.
Thanks for watching! There is definitely potential for a change of angle 🤘
wah..🙏🙏🙏
Definitely pot 3for the elm
Thanks Jane
What do you call them pots? They work like rootmaker pots. Look up rootbuilder. The second video is the video I'm referring to. Made me rethink the way I drill holes in training pots.
It is a pond basket, they are used for aquatic plants in garden ponds. Thanks for watching. I watched some very interesting talks from the root maker pots guy. Cheers
Useful video Darren. Can I ask when you repotted this Berberis please? I'm looking to repot a couple I have and there seems to be very little information about this on the internet.
When the buds have swollen, up to leaves open. Pretty early in my garden, think I did it a week or two ago this year
Awesome little barberry. I think you’re right to be thrilled with the result, it’s quite impressive. I do wonder though: would you ever consider repositioning it the pot slightly skewed to the LEFT so that instead of the trunk coming out of the ground very vertical and shooting off to 2:00, it instead would leave the ground at 10:00 or 11:00, and then shoot back toward the right? I have this sense that the apex wants to be closer to the centerline.
Just tell me to shut the hell up if this is all nonsense. Thanks for the vid.
I’ve considered it a couple times, for now I kinda like it as is but definitely an option for the future. I like that it’s a little different, to make it into a more informal upright form could work though. All opinions are valid, it’s subjective after all. Thanks for watching 🙏
Great tree! I also thought of using smallish shrubs for making small bonsai, but no luck yet. Would you post an update when it comes into leaf, please?
Thanks! I surely will post an update, probably around pruning time.
Very nice!!!, is there a video prior to this one?, with the basket potting and first wiring. Thank you.
Unfortunately not, but I'm planning to make a 'nursery stock to bonsai' video following all the process start to finish. It will be a different tree of course :) Thanks for showing an interest - I appreciate it
Hi Darren. The tree looks lovely, and I agree with your choice of pot. I wondered where you bought those beautiful pots?
Thanks Joe. All except the green round are from erinbonsai.com (they ship worldwide). The green round is from European bonsai potters collective who I think also ship. (not sponsored)
Wonderful. Thank you. Keep up the good work. I'm enjoying your videos. I've been practising bonsai for about 6 years. Safe to say it's become a passion.
You’re welcome and thanks for watching.
how do you make the tipdressing? what does it consist of ? beautiful pot and gorgeous pot/tree.
Thanks, it’s 50/50 dried shredded sphagnum moss and dried shredded collected moss from paving, brick walls, and other stone or aggregate surfaces
@@grobonsai ok, thanks you! i know what im going to make this weekend :).
Enjoy, thanks for watching
Hi, I really enjoyed the video and would like to try for myself. Could you tell me the exact name of the Berberis plant you used? Thanks.
Thanks 🙏 the plant is Berberis thunbergii Atropurpurea ‘Nana’. Watch out for the thorns though, they are sharp and have a tendency to break and leave a splinter. Let me know how you get on
Thanks for the info I will look for one and let you know how it goes .
Hi Darren, do you insulate these pond baskets over winter?
I don’t, but with the caveat that I don’t have any tender species and my winters rarely go below -3C / 26f
Dear sir ,if a tree gets a fungus/disease one growing season, would you hold off repotting this season? Thanks
It would be good to get advice from someone who can look at the tree, but failing that, it’s generally best to do what it takes to get the tree healthy first. If it feels safer to wait, do that, if it needs repotting so badly it is (or will soon) affecting the trees healthy, consider conservatively repotting. Probably best to avoid big root work though!
Thank you
Use the biggest one. Where are the new roots going to go.
Thanks 🙏
How do you call these baskets again please?
I would like to look to find some somewhere !
In the uk they are called pond baskets. They are used for pond plants
Thanks for the quick answer! I really appreciate !
You are doing a fantastic job with trees !🍷
Cheers!
when is the best time to repot? at the end of the winter/beginning of spring? anything more specific than that?
also, should i change the soil mixture if i take nursery stock/wild specimins? I've been using 1 part potting mix, 1 part peat, 1 part sand generally when i repot them to begin training... any advice?
Great questions. There are some variations among certain species. But generally when buds start to swell is the ideal time. If new foliage has emerged the aftercare needs to be very good.

@@grobonsai thanks, super useful. since I am talking about saplings, do you know if a soil mix will encourage thinner root growth? I'd love to get a jump on training them early
I would have put them in bigger pots to be honest.... but very nice
Thanks for watching
Somebody looking very similar to you at the Swindon show today?
I was there yep, stopped by for a look and picked up a couple pots.. Did we meet? I have trouble recognising online usernames sometimes
@@grobonsai I was going to say hello, then the raffle started. I go to the Swindon club. Hope you are pleased with the pots. Picked up a bag of the larch seedlings to have a play with, potted them up this afternoon.
I was mesmerized by this video. Hypnotized. Just amazing.

👍
Thanks 🙏
What‘s the size of the pot ?
Sorry I’m not sure as I don’t own the tree any longer I can’t measure it. I think it was 12.5cm wide though
Hey, what species is this tree?
The botanical name is Berberis thunbergii ‘Atropurpurea Nana’
