First Impressions: Pink Floyd Animals Remix 2018/2022

- I didn't see this coming, but the new remix/remaster got my head spinning and punched me in the center of my chest! Here are a few first impressions of The Floyd's latest release!
I'm one of the 70s fans who never doubted the album's greatness.
Waters really "took over" Pink Floyd with "Wish You Were Here" - for the simple reason that, after Dark Side, the band were out of ideas. Backing away from the pressure to come up with an album that could follow Dark Side, they procrastinated for over a year with obtuse experimental projects like "Household Objects" that ultimately didn't lead anywhere useful. iirc, the whole "Household Objects" project ended up providing the opening chord for WYWH, and that's about it.
Coming up with a workable concept for WYWH therefore fell to Waters, who took inspiration from various things that were going on in his life - a failing marriage, disillusion with the music business, the band's history, etc. The rest of the band were relieved to have a concept delivered to them on a plate, and were happy to go along with it. That's the moment when Waters became the captain of the ship.
After that album worked out well for them, successfully clearing the pressure to make a successful follow-up to Dark Side, the rest of the band admit (in interviews) that they simply became "lazy" and were content to sit back and let Roger Waters get on with coming up with the concepts and lyrics. After all, it was working out pretty well for everyone involved.
From Waters' point of view, I guess what happened next was a bit like a family being happy to leave all of the household finances, insurance, etc., to dad - and then, after years of letting him handle all that stuff for them (successfully, like a well-oiled machine) deciding they actually _resented_ the set-up, accusing him of being controlling and locking them out of the process ... the process that they'd been only too happy to leave up to him for years, leading to the situation where they now felt disenfranchised.
That's a good analysis defending Roger's position, which is almost always criticized in this regard. The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.
@@AY-uf4oz Very kind of you, thanks. Yes, the truth is that Pink Floyd were "better together" - each of them brought something to the mix that was sorely missed when it was no longer there.
A bit like any kind of politics, it's easy to gradually lose democracy over time if you're content to let someone with a strong vision take charge - and very difficult to get that person to cede any of that power back willingly.
Trouble is, once Waters had gone and the rest of the band were "free" to do whatever they wanted ... it turned out that, after all, they didn't really have anything much that they were burning to say.
Waters emitted a string of solo albums which underlined the fact that he was more interested in the concept and the lyrics than the actual music, noticeably lacking the musicality and "choons" that Gilmour, Wright and Mason had brought to the show.
And the others, as "Pink Floyd," only emitted one more proper studio album (which imho noticeably lacked the bite that Waters had brought to the show) in the full quarter-century between "regaining their freedom" and Wright dying, so it's hard to see what exactly Waters was holding them back from doing.
Yep, Pink Floyd were undeniably "better together" and diminished apart. Shame it went the way it did, because we could've had 25 more years of proper Pink Floyd albums.
I agree that Waters took over Pink Floyd with WYWH when it comes to concepts/lyrics but musically he didn't take over until The Final Cut. The fact is that PF wouldn't be the same without Water's lyrics and the musical input/textures from the rest of the band.
@@MIB_63 Totally agree. Pink Floyd was a combination of 4 talents, each bringing something unique to the band, and each one's absence was felt when they weren't there.
iirc, The Final Cut was mainly Waters and Mason, wasn't it? Wright had been sacked during The Wall, so he didn't participate at all, and Gilmour was deeply unhappy with everything about the album so he did the bare minimum, basically coming in to add some solos and then going away again ASAP.
Mason's involvement, beyond drums ofc, was (iirc) mostly to do with the album's experimental sampling - like the percussive samples of cars going by - so, yes, musically that album was pretty much down to Waters.
Animals is Pink Floyd's most aggressive, epic and truly soulful rock and roll album. Undoubtedly the best album by the old English band.
'Pigs, three different ones' has ALWAYS been the highlight of this record! Truly epic.
I bought the Analogue Productions SACD versions of Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, and enroute Animals. SACD has a CD layer too. That for me is the definitive format for Pink Floyd. I have all their LP originals but the now. SACD is it!
I really wish they'd stop using unlined paper sleeves.. Poly lined at the very minimum should be mandatory.
agreed. Still a pretty good value for $30 USD
_if_ you're not stuck with a digipak, sure. Lol
I can’t believe the number of new/newer pressings that come with unlined paper sleeves. Sad.
@David Mander and tiny notes
@@smkordis same here.. It's something they should've abandoned doing _years_ ago. Hell, even my 70's German Beatles records came with poly lined sleeves. Lol. I just don't get it.. It really can't be that much more expensive to include those, vs the paper ones that surely cause a huge chunk of returns due to scratches, dirt, noise, etc.. 🤷🏻
The main reason Waters took over the conceptual and lyrical duties for the Band is that in these critical areas, the remaining band members couldn't contribute. And thank God for that - Animals is my second favourite Pink Floyd album. Magical guitar playing and keyboard work as well as great drumming by Mason.
I havent heard any rock and roll singer treat vocals in this way.
Classic piece of work.
It isn't obvious to this reader that the _Animal Farm_ retouching of "Raving and Drooling" and "You Gotta Be Crazy" resulted in a better product. Surely the introduction of two variations on a very short song to bookend the substantial tunes helped to fatten Waters' wallet and support the narrative that Waters was the indispensable creative force of the band.
Somewhere, buried by the dreck on _Wish You Were Here_ and repurposed by _Animals_ , there was a good album trying to get out. It would have had "Raving and Drooling," "You Gotta Be Crazy," something resembling "Pigs," and maybe "Have a Cigar" and "Wish You Were Here." It would have been a worthy follow-up to _The Dark Side of the Moon_ , focusing on the uglier aspects of the issues touched upon in that album, less pretentious than _Animals_ , and with better sound quality. (The sound quality of _Animals_ was awful because the members of Pink Floyd thought they knew more about production and engineering than they did, something that Guthrie's 2018 remix didn't completely rectify.)
Great first video! Keep them coming and good luck with the channel. Ignore internet idiots/trolls!
Pigs, three different ones, did that for me too. It was so much more complex than had remembered it. It was my least favorite song before and is now right up there with Sheep and Dogs. You could hear the bass runs and Rogers voice is much clearer in areas that were muddy before. There were so many sounds and layers it blew me away. Great mix.
This remix was done especially to create the surround sound mix and that's how it should be heard, on SACD or Blu Ray, not on outdated technology in bog standard stereo, that misses the point of this.
In surround sound like Wish You Were Here and Dark Side of the Moon, it is superb. That is the way to listen.
Stereo, the remasters are still the best way to hear, the way the original albums were meant to be heard.
Waiting now for the surround sound of The Wall.
hi, i don't speak english, so i use google translate...yes i can confirm, i have "dark side of the moon" in SACD version which i listen to on a 5.1 channel and the sound comes from everywhere, from behind the ears and it swirls, it's not an impression! so I'm going to get "animals" in SACD
Not sure where the disc originated from, but the packaging was indicated Netherlands.
hear it on 5.1 and you'll really hear things bouncing around........magnificent album.
plug the blu ray version in and you get different video moods........as in when Dogs starts, the sky turns gloomy.
The whole package is amazing from the vinyl to the sacd, cd, dvd and blu ray. I love this remaster.
'Pigs' has always been the only song I actually like from Animals. Cool.
Привет тебе Боб из Росси! Ты прав звук вокруг там есть и это очень здорово! У меня есть на SACD ,Dark side of the moon, Wish you were here, Roger Waters. Amused to death. И ещё на DVD-A , The endless river, David Gilmour. Rattle that теперь вот обязательно куплю LP animals и sacd . Осталось нам набраться терпения и дождаться нового микса The Wall ,тем более что он уже давно готов! Всем удачи и мирного неба над головой!
Love the new sleeve. Equally symbolic as the original when you consider what Battersea Power Station is today. They had to take advantage of that.
You received a rare pressing then, most reviews have said both sides have loud pops and clicks, including two copies myself. The remix is of this album is phenomenal though.
Dont have the vinyl. Heard there were qc issues. But i do have the bluray audio. I think you will also be pleased with the multi channel uncompressed audio… pretty cool
I agree that it’s an amazing, three dimensional mix. Unfortunately, I returned the album twice due to noisy vinyl. The prominent, repetitive pops even occurred on the same spots on both records. I’ll give the vinyl one last try before purchasing a cd version.
Hi Nick I only gave it the one chance full of surface marks noisy vinyl I sent back got cd version.
I find recent vinyl releases have lots of issues had terrible trouble with pulse decent copy after about 5 attempts all from new marks scratches etc etc quality control shocking.
@@kevgardiner4852 I fully agree. It is a shame to produce vinyls now a days in such bad conditions. I owned this album now the 4th time. This copy is ok but far from perfect😞
@@kevgardiner4852 the vinyl version has a 40% failure rate. That is really bad. My copy pops like crazy.
Terrible isn’t it I think it should be re issued with problems rectified and anti static inner sleeve then I will buy it
@@kevgardiner4852 my vinyl copy of Dark side of the Moon is quiet, no pops at all. This version of Animals, on vinyl, has issues.
Great review. I agree with everything said about the new edition and the sound of this album.
Cheers for your insights!
Someone rocked out behind you. This is a great review and overview. I went looking for the album on the weekend but no luck. I’ll keep trying. Can you please make a video on how you have 1.7k views on one video? That’s more astounding than pigs flying behind your head!!!!
Pink Floyd is huuuge with large following so this video is suggested to much broader audience.
Apparently they brought in a new guitarist for the remix named Davis Gilmour...
I like the new looking cover. It says that this is something different…which it is!
…..I on My 50’s..And I Never been a Big Fan of ANIMALS,Until Know,To be Honest!!
…This 2018 Remix make my Think Twice and probably this is the best Mix or at least for some of us.🤷🏻♂️
…..I just get de CD Last Sunday !
It Is Just Unbelievable!!
You are lucky you received a Netherlands pressing. LPs pressed elsewhere are being reported as noisy.
Had two copies from Amazon with bad surface noise, especially Pigs on the Wing pt1. Think they were Dutch copies, will have to try somewhere else.
I thought you were making a video to compare the old vinyl version to the new one. Well, I was wrong! You didn't even know this album already.
I’m a defender of Roger Waters. He’s only in the past decade got the full credit he deserves.
Now that all the many years have past we can look back and see the truth.
When Syd Barret went, Waters was the song writer and leader of the band. He wrote DSOTM, WYW, Animals and The Wall. Gilmour IS one the best rock guitarists ever but his concept and song writing ability isn’t even close and in that regard was only a contributor.
They should have included the full Pigs on the Wing Parts 1 & 2 combined version with Snowy White's guitar replaced by David's new solo and give him a songwriting credit. There was nothing wrong with the original. It always rocked. This new version is bland to my ears.
Yeah man. Pigs is killer. That guitar solo so amazing. (Its said waters “accidentally erased” an even better version of that solo)
Waters and Mason accidentally erased the solo on the long version of Pigs on the Wing, not Pigs (Three Different Ones). That is why Snowy White came to play it in the end. If you've ever heard it.
@@jonnydavies6968 ive not heard the version. I have heard that story though. Tragic for rock n roll.
It’s Pink Floyd at there peak,
We're u doing drugs Bob when you herd those 3D sounds? 🤔🤭🤣
No. No drugs I'm afraid. I really heard the effect. Very reminiscent of @-channel Q Sound effects I've heard on other Waters and Floyd albums in the past. Might have been room reflections, but it was very pronounced. I'm going to listen again.
@@lightnightdial7191 lol ok Bob, I just got the CD also I'm going to check it out and see if I hear anything 🤣
@@lightnightdial7191 like a whoosh sound I received hard to explain but I definitely agree with you.
The best bass playing is on Pigs (3 Different Ones), and it's played by David Gilmour. Roger Waters plays the squawking rhythm guitar. All the other guitars are Gilmour.
$30US or less?? I wish it were so in Australia.
HAH! 11.12 get the teen in the doorway! 🤣
Dumped all my albums last year and only play CDs (in my custom $15k car stereo). I have the older remastered Animals CD, which is lacking some bass. Can anyone comment on the 2022 (2018) Remastered CD?
Agree with above review. Much improved sonically. Bass, keys, drums etc. Buy it.
If it's the original you're after, not the remix, try and hunt down the original UK Harvest CD. I picked one up the other month second hand. Sounds the best to me. The 1994 remaster sounds flat and dull with no top end. The recent remaster of the original (2011) is a bit clearer, but lacking in bottom end. The Harvest one manages to keep the thick sound of the original album, while retaining some good top end. I have managed to pick up the original Havest UK CD's of Meddle, WYWH and Animals now, and they all sound the best to my ears. AAD. The recent remix/remaster of Animals is great too.
On Pink Floyd Animals (2018) Remix
Dogs track 10.45 into the track they have down mixed the whistling, it's practically taken off the track, l much prefer original version, where you can so clearly here whistling in the track.
On sheep the Lords Prayer is very unclear can't make out what there saying
11:09 🤦🏻
I can write a list of pink floyd rock bands you didn't listen to in the 70s because your brain is primitive))
This album.... should it be polished? Shouldbe gritty dark and crunch. It lost some of that. A capitalist record for a record critiquing capitalism. Not sure I love that. Was more of a punk feel which is what it was suppose to be. IMO
Sorry but I had this album when it first came out and I still feel it is not up to the standards of audio quality of their previous several albums. I could only think, "compressed" "tinny sounding" and it became about my least enjoyable album to return to, not because of the music but the sound of it. And the CD version from years ago really no improvement. The only way it would sound better is to totally remix and re equalize etc. to get rid of the AM radio hits 45 rpm sound.
А man has nothing to do in this life.Have you tried listening to cooler music? for example " Sun City Girls" old but primitive))
What cleaning fluids are you sniffing mate?
