Railfanning Oxnard - 7/16/18

- With a brief hiatus at work, I decided to head out on another quick railfanning trip to railfan the Coast Line and Metrolink's Ventura County Line. With the impending phase out of the Surfliner F59PHI's, it was another reason to head back out along this line and railfan. This particular trip comprises of railfanning at Oxnard, Camarillo, Moorpark, and Simi Valley on Monday and Tuesday, where I would railfan at Oxnard, Moorpark, and Camarillo in that particular order on Monday and wrapping up my trip with Simi Valley on Tuesday before heading back home. With that in mind, I started my railfanning at Oxnard to catch the morning Monday commute in addition to the local freight movements. The Oxnard Station serves as a major transit center for the city including bus and rail connections in addition to other services and amenities located within the station itself. The particular thing that is interesting about this location however is the fact that the station almost literally sits on a 90 degree curve of the railroad mainline. Due in part to this, interesting shots can be possible at either ends of the station in addition to ample parking throughout the area as a result. There are also spur tracks that split off from the mainline right next to the station, where freight is interchanged with the Ventura County Railroad, particularly serving the Port Hueneme Naval Base. Further south of the station, the original Southern Pacific Depot also still exists, although it now serves as a local office for Union Pacific Maintenance of Way and train crews as seen in the video, but nonetheless still providing a great vantage point for departing southbound trains. All in all, whether it is the idealistically situated railroad curve, the local freight activity, or the station facilities, Oxnard is certainly a decent place to see the train activity come and go.
Note : The Union Pacific LOF63-16 (Oxnard Local) typically is on duty around 6:30am, however on this particular Monday, the crew started up significantly earlier, approximately when Amtrak 759 arrived into Oxnard at 5:57am, where the headlights of the UP train can be seen shining off of Amtrak 759. The crew headed south while Amtrak 759 was boarding, but will return back to Oxnard a short while later.
Train 1 : Metrolink #102 with CabCar #649 & MP36PH-3C #890. Apologies for the defocusing. It is amazing how bright train headlights can be looking straight on.
Train 2 : Amtrak 759 with F59PHI #462 & CabCar #6903. Nice engineer on #462 with blasts of the horn upon departure !
Train 3 : Metrolink #104 with CabCar #638 & F59PHI #875.
Train 4 : Union Pacific LOF63-16 (Oxnard Local) with GP60 #1154. After doing some local switching south of the station, the crew of LOF63-16 head north past the station, then back into the siding to wait for Metrolink #106 to pass. This train sure did sneak up on me !
Train 5 : Metrolink #106 with CabCar #643 & MP36PH-3C #889.
Train 6 : Union Pacific LOF63-16 (Oxnard Local) with GP60 #1154. After Metrolink #106 has departed Oxnard, #1154 proceeds back onto the main and heads south, following right behind Metrolink #106 to continue switching in Camarillo.
Train 7 : Amtrak 768 with CabCar #6953 & P42DC #206. Friendly engineer on #6953 with a nice horn salute departing Oxnard !

Oxnard is a nice railfanning area! I plan to railfan at Moreno Valley March next. My railfan trips are nevet scheduled.

I just finished my train trip. It was so much fun. I rode up on train #777 with Cabcar #6907 and Emd f59 phi #456 and came home on train #774 with cabcar #6903 and emd f59phi #???? (I can't remember which locomotive it was).

Amtrak’s biggest fan, good for you, I ride to Oxnard on the Pacific Surfliner from San Diego when I’m home in the San Diego area from the Loser City Tucson area where I want o get out of there & back to the San Diego area where I belong. I’m in the process of taking steps to do it.

Great railfannin spot there in Oxnard. I ride to & from Oxnard & Los Angeles on the Pacific Surfliners when I’m home in the San Diego area from the Loser City Tucson area. I alternate my visits between Los Angeles & Oxnard.

Thank you ! There are currently 12 regularly scheduled weekday passenger trains (Amtrak Coast Starlight, Pacific Surfliner, and Metrolink trains), but at the time this video was filmed, there were 18 regularly scheduled weekday passenger trains. This however doesn’t include Union Pacific freight trains that may pass through or service the local rail yard; adding to the total count of daily trains at Oxnard. (Note: Metrolink does not operate on weekends at Oxnard.)
