I had the same view in the Lockheed C-121/L749 Constellation. You can actually crawl into the forward baggage compartment, lie on your belly and slide open a door. Once that was accomplished your head was in the front wheel well. By the time the gear goes down and the the gear doors open, you have the most amazing view and aircraft can offer 😇
@@RogerP1969 Actually not, unless there is an accident. You are lying flat on your belly in the forward cargo compartment. There is a couple of inch high fuselage rib wich prevents you from slipping forward. You can even stick your head into open wheel well once the gear is extended. It is brand new. During such restoration most of the original plane is thrown away and replaced by new parts. Some Warbirds have less than 5% of their original WW2 and airframe, systems and engines still fitted. It is often actually easier to build a new plane straight away.
With B29 Doc being from Wichita where I live and grew up, it's great to see him flying over my house frequently but more so to see him flying all over the country spreading that joy and awww of him in flight. So cool.
Interesting factoid, the B29 lacked a steerable nose wheel. It simply castered freely. While taxiing, the plane was steered with differential braking. Once the takeoff run began, the throttles were used to provide directional control until about 90kts were achieved. Only then did the rudder have enough air flowing over it to become effective. But this is a complex military plane, so I'm pretty sure that checklists would have been followed strictly. On the other hand it was also cutting edge enough to experience teething problems (e.g. the original engine type).
I have always wondered why they don’t put little wind veins on the side of the wheels so they spin in the wind as to not burn so much rubber on touch down ?

An amazing product of high engineering and technical competence. We must be grateful for the fact three are still flying.
Doc and Fifi are the only flying one, I hear that another is in flyable restoration.
Man i hope they keep Doc flying forever.

Why there is an opening in the landing gear compartment???
They invited us to see it. If not, we couldn't.
For when the gear doesn't go down. They open the hatch and have a crew member jump on the wheels until it goes down.
So they can check tire pressure before landing
