FANTASTIC Video. Thank you for posting. Especially your talk about Noise Reduction. I never knew how to adjust the settings. Do i understand correctly...? _Normalize_ sort of highlights the hum for easier capturing in Noise Reduction? THANK YOU AGAIN! This video helped me so much!!
David, thanks a lot for the helpful info. I think my question is very basic. Starting around 7:00, you say the audio is too bassy and let's remove some base. Then you move the sliders up. I thought moving sliders up would increase the bass; that's what seems to happen when I try it. What am I misunderstanding?
When using a graphic equalizer, the sliders are used to change the wave form. Moving the slider up caused the bass area to move up to more of a treble range (and thus less bass).

I really appreciate this comprehensive workshop video... no other as clear and thorough out there. Just curious, my voice waves are much like what are in this sample (though I've never had much hum/room noise). I'm recording with a Rode NT1 kit (with preamp) and speaking with about the distance of a hang loose hand sign from my mic. Is there something I can do differently on the front end of recording to improve the recording?
Good question. I like to divide my script into parts and indicate where I will breathe during each part. While recording, I also will say certain sentences several different ways and then choose the best one during editing. Good luck!

David, thank you very much for your content. Im starting my own podcast using a lot of what I have learned from your videos. One thing that I am struggling with, is when exporting the audio to Mp3. The audio doesn't seem to have the same quality and bass. Recording on 16bits - 44100hz, equalizing on "bass boost" and normalizing at -2.5 and still very robotic and kind of tremble voice. Any suggestion? Thanks mate
The 16bit--44100Hz setting is for CD quality. You can definitely go higher: 32bit, 96000, or even higher and see if the larger file size makes a difference. You can also export out using one of the other codecs, depending on what program you will use the file in next. "Uncompressed" is the largest file size and is closest to the original. You may also want to normalize at -1.5 dB and see if that helps. Also, try equalization with the graphic sliders to reduce treble. The "robotic" element sounds more like a delivery or acting issue.

you said Equalisation is making the harsh sounds less harsh and the soft sounds louder. But isn't that compression, which is "the process of lessening the dynamic range between the loudest and quietest parts of an audio signal. This is done by boosting the quieter signals and attenuating the louder signals" . I don't understand the difference. thanks

Holy cow! This is undoubtedly one of the best Audacity tutorials *ever*. I just couldn't figure out that stupid hum and only you brought it up. I was doing Noise Reduction multiple times, but I found it affects my voice a bit. Makes it slightly metallic. Can you help? Any ideas?
Extreme--First, make sure you are selecting a part of the clip that has no speaking. Second, use the slider on the Noise Reduction tool to *slowly* remove noise. Keep repeating and adjusting the slider to take out more noise. At some point, you will either remove all of the noise or your voice will begin to sound metallic. At that point, that's it. If there is still noise left, Audacity cannot help you any more. Good luck!

Excellent tutorial! What if the background sound is a hiss close to the frequency of the human voice? is there a was to narrow the band of the noise reduction so the voice isn't affected/reduced? Thank you!
I did Noise reduction + compressor +equalization + normalize, will that make my recording better? Becausr i can still hear a bit sound of the background..
If you still are hearing background noise, you need to do Noise Reduction again. Isolate and sample at least one second of the background noise and redo the Noise Reduction. Play with how much you take out without distorting your voice signal.

Hello, David. Thanks for the informative video. In EQ I usually do bass boost and treble boost and it seems to work pretty well. The question I have is, how do you go about setting up an EQ curve?
Hi, To create a new EQ curve and save it so that you can apply it to future clips, first be Select EQ from Effects, then Graphic radio button, move sliders to achieve your desired effect, then click Save/Manage and give the new EQ a name. It will now show up in the selection list in the future. Good luck!
Thanks! As far as getting the desired effect, is it really a matter of trial and error or are there recommended settings? If there are defaults, maybe I can just do some fine tuning.
You're welcome! If you are using the same equipment and environment for recordings, EQ presets or plugins can be helpful, especially as starting points. Audacity has about 8 built in. You can download EQ plugins and import them into Audacity. Just Google "Audacity EQ Presets" and "Audacity EQ Plugins."
I have been playing audacity for a bit now. Nice and easy to work with. Im trying to figure out to remove the white noise from a psb7 recording. Btw your voice reminds me of ezra levant. 👍
Hi, Lee. After you import the clip to Audacity, try to find a 1-2 second section of nothing but the noise. Then conduct the two steps of noise reduction. Increase the amount of reduction as needed. ua-cam.com/video/CJJgJfI_sZ4/v-deo.html
@@SuperstudentAcademy You're welcome! Actually, I left out the first step: Normalization ->Noise Reduction -> EQ -> Compression (then you may have to re-normalize.
Thad--Thanks for your question. The more that you crank in noise removal, the more likely the tool is to eat into the vocal part. My goal when a clip has substantial noise is to use the reduction tool just enough to flatten the noise and not affect the voice.

@@peakdavid at first I was using Beat earphones connected to the Mic+ but I stoped doing that because I believe that it was transmitting static to the recording.
Yes, it can. At the beginning of video, hit record and don't breathe or say anything for 5 seconds. That 5 seconds will contain the ambient noise that Audacity can remove. If during recording a loud car goes by, pause your speaking, let Audacity record the car noise, then remove the noise using the technique demonstrated in the video. Good luck!

The problem is likely the environment where you are recording--lots of flat surfaces that echo your voice back into the mic instead of absorbing it. You can try recording in a closet or try putting towels liberally over everything in the room, including the floor if you don't have carpeting. Also, don't be directly facing a computer monitor when recording. The monitor will also echo back your voice. If those techniques don't work, the problem may be your mic or sound card.
That could mean that (1) reduction was not applied to the entire clip; (2) the original sample before reduction was not long enough; (3) there's too much noise on the original and there's not much you can do about it; (4) the sensitivity and amount settings on the noise reduction tool might need to be increased. My guess is that your clip is just too noisy. That happens sometimes and you just have to bit the bullet and re-record.
@@emlodydjw6367 Voice distortion occurs when the amount and sensitivity sliders are set too high and begin leeching some of the frequencies/harmonies of the human voice. If you back off the sliders, some of the noise will return. This is why the original recording must be done in a quiet a room as possible, there must be a 3-5 second pause when the recording starts to capture all of the background noise. Some environments are just too noisy to record in.
@@emlodydjw6367 After selecting Noise Reduction from the Effects dropdown menu, a dialogue box will appear. The two sliders you want are Noise Reduction (dB) and Sensitivity. Play with them, apply, playback the clip, play some more.

I thought moving sliders up would increase the bass; that's what seems to happen when I try it. What am I misunderstanding?
When using a graphic equalizer, the sliders are used to change the wave form. Moving the slider up caused the bass area to move up to more of a treble range (and thus less bass).
@@peakdavid Thanks for replying! I didn't realize this was how it works. I thought up is more, down is less.
Excellent video, really helped. Noise reduction is great feature. Would in my music production days use a gate but so much better.
Martin, you sound like a pro. Gates are good (and I need to do a video on this) but noise reduction is better for background noise.

Very useful tutorial . Thank you
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!! ITS VERY USEFUL TO ME AND TOTALLY EASY TO UNDERSTAND VIDEO YOU HAVE MADE!! THANK YOU
Hi this is exactly what I am looking for thanks very very much.
This is the best video on this topic.
Good luck!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH BROO, YOU WAS HELP ME TO FIX NOISE IN MY AUDACITY. LOVE YOUUU..🙂

Do you always normalize first and do you ever normalize again after EQ and compression?
Yes, I try to remember to normalize first, and, yes, sometimes it's necessary to normalize again after compression. Good luck!
Thank you. And does it matter what order you do EQ and compression?
The "robotic" element sounds more like a delivery or acting issue.
hello!thansks for the tutorial, really big help.wanna ask if possible to adjust the voice volume for the other persons that i record.where on the meeting but i cant hear loud coz other person whose near on me is over lapping the whole voice memos.hope to hear you soon.
If there is only one microphone, the answer is no. If different speakers are on different microphones, yes. Record each mic on a different track.
Thanks David. Really helpful tutorial. 👍
It's like if you record off your mobile phone so good
you said Equalisation is making the harsh sounds less harsh and the soft sounds louder. But isn't that compression, which is "the process of lessening the dynamic range between the loudest and quietest parts of an audio signal. This is done by boosting the quieter signals and attenuating the louder signals" . I don't understand the difference. thanks
I teach my students to use EQ to boost or reduce selected frequencies for a more natural sound in comparison to their actual or desired voice.

Good luck!
@@peakdavid Thank you so much. I didn't know about the slider. Will definitely try that ASAP.
Hi David- Would you please do a video on how to get rid of an echo. My client recorded herself with air pods, so lots of echo. Thank you!
Bad news--in this case the echo is not background noise. If you remove it from between her voice, it will still be part of her voice.
David Taylor thank you. I ended up having her re record herself. But I was hoping there was a way to get rid of it.
dear sir, i have been using audacity for the last 7-8 years. i have recently updated it to version 3.1.2. i have been using karaoke tracks available in you tube and other channels and record instrumental songs played in my key board and upload to my channel in you tube. i have been playing the instrumental tune in the same pitch of the karaoke track. But for the last 2-3 days, audacity is recording my instrumental track up by 2 pitches than the actual pitch in which i play the tone. i am not able to understand why it is doing it. My audacity project rate (Hz) is 44100 and i changed it to 44800 but in vein.... please help me how to enable audacity to record in the pitch which i play my key board and not in different pitch.....

Thanks. Yes, with Audacity's Noise Reduction, you can filter for any frequency you wish.
This has been Very Helpful thank You!
Do you have a Video on how to set up the Gain for the microphone to a Mixer?
Fred, I am sorry but I do not. I sure a little searching here on UA-cam will turn something up for you.
@@peakdavid as i said, i already did noise reduction, then compressor, than equalization, than normalization, so if ill do noise reduction again, it wont ruin the audio or something?

@@peakdavid thank you so much, i will play with it tonight 👍

Noise reduction --> EQ --> Compression

@@SuperstudentAcademy You're welcome! Actually, I left out the first step: Normalization ->Noise Reduction -> EQ -> Compression (then you may have to re-normalize.

Probably a basic question, but why not just reduce it by 48 decibels instead of incrementing it down?
Thad--Thanks for your question. The more that you crank in noise removal, the more likely the tool is to eat into the vocal part. My goal when a clip has substantial noise is to use the reduction tool just enough to flatten the noise and not affect the voice.

How do you get rid of thumps and paper sounds without ruining the audio?

@@ryankim9017 Ryan--do the sounds occur anywhere that you are not speaking?
Oh yeah, but sometimes there are sounds of water sipping and paper crackling while there is speaking
@@ryankim9017 In that case you have no other option but to rerecord. Do so in a small room, isolated, and put towels and blankets on surfaces to minimize echo. Hit record, do not speak for 3-5 seconds, then begin speaking. Make sure your mic is 3-4 inches from your mouth,. Good luck!

Yes, it can. At the beginning of video, hit record and don't breathe or say anything for 5 seconds. That 5 seconds will contain the ambient noise that Audacity can remove. very good bro.. thanks.
You're welcome! Glad that it helped.
great tutorial!
why does your voice audio sound like a digital hall way when you speak and how do I fix that?
The problem is likely the environment where you are recording--lots of flat surfaces that echo your voice back into the mic instead of absorbing it. You can try recording in a closet or try putting towels liberally over everything in the room, including the floor if you don't have carpeting. Also, don't be directly facing a computer monitor when recording. The monitor will also echo back your voice. If those techniques don't work, the problem may be your mic or sound card.
@@peakdavid thank you I will give it a try
@@djchubbithecheka6050 Good luck!
i did remove the noise when no one is talking but it didnt remove it when someone was talking
@@peakdavid yes makes sense. thank you, but why does my voice kinda get distorted when i use this?
@@emlodydjw6367 Voice distortion occurs when the amount and sensitivity sliders are set too high and begin leeching some of the frequencies/harmonies of the human voice. If you back off the sliders, some of the noise will return. This is why the original recording must be done in a quiet a room as possible, there must be a 3-5 second pause when the recording starts to capture all of the background noise. Some environments are just too noisy to record in.
@@peakdavid okay , thank you! and one more question not to bother you anymore hahhah, how to back off sliders?
