Basically the NIL deals were meant to allow famous college athletes to cash in on endorsement opportunities (i.e. like when Michael Jordan signs with Gatorade). What Deion is pointing out is there are only like 5-10 college athletes famous enough to justify getting those endorsement deals but currently 100s of college athletes have NIL deals. What is actually going on is that boosters (rich businessmen who donate to their alma mater) are all chipping in and paying players to sign with a college through NIL deals. E.g. a booster with a handful of grocery stores pays the left tackle $50k to post 3 times in a month, even if the left tackle has barely any social media followers. They do this across the roster and the bigger the college, the more money they have to spend on the rosters. It's essentially a professional sports team where the program channels the money to players via NIL deals, even having values per position (a top tier QB is like $2m vs a linebacker at like $50k). Not what the NIL was intended to be.
