    Here’s a fun fact that I remember but might be wrong: the alpha series attachment to their little sisters are so strong, that if the little sisters die, they either commit suicide, mourn till they die or become what has been mentioned in the video.

    So while what the Little Sisters say sounds creepy it actually makes sense from their perspective. You find out in the second game that they see the world completely differently to everyone else. So when they say angels they mean it.

    It's interesting, in bioshock 1 you hear the sisters call the big daddy's mr bubbles. But in bioshock 2 when you play AS a big daddy, they call you daddy and look different, implying that the big daddy's had alterations to their visual and audio stimuli

    • @catrianheir

      In bioshock 2 you can find an audio recording talking about how tenenbaum (I don't remember for sure if it was her tho) was ordered to make the sisters more aesthetically appealing, cause them being dirty and creepy was making the citizens uncomfortable or something.

      There's also the missions (flash backs? Its been a while) where you play as a little sister and everything is glittery and pink and butterflies, butbif you're paying attention you realize how dark the environment around you really is. Makes complete sense that the big daddies have something similar, even if it's only minor auditory changes.

    They actually did talk about BioShock Infinite for a small moment in this video. They mentioned Elizabeth who is from that game and she plays a large part in the Infinite DLC which ties all of the games together. As different as Infinite is, it is still very dark underneath the brighter exterior and that is the whole point of its deviation. Interesting thing is that BioShock 1 and Infinite were made by the same creative director so it's definitely worth checking out.

    Man looking back at it, Bioshock is still timeless. And small note, when Ryan said the Big Daddies were knights in shining armor, the conditioning the Little Sisters saw them as that, and everything else in a different light. They called the bodies they harvest ADAM from angels because that's what they quite literally see them as lying on the floor. Also the drill for the Bouncer variant was able to be shot like a grapple line, but caused them to act out, don't remember the specifics but they stopped making them like that

  • @Thorax2552
    @Thorax2552 2 роки тому +9

    I'm sorry but the Little Sister's sinister dialogue's were always oddly adorable to me haha. A great example is in Bioshock 2, if she witnesses someone being electrocuted, she'll excitedly exclaim "Look daddy, he dancing!"

  • @chiromagi7822
    @chiromagi7822 2 роки тому +28

    This was an excellent breakdown of how Big Daddies operate. First time fighting one of those things is jarring as hell. You see them kind of skulking about, but they aren't aggressive at all unless you get too close. They're easy to avoid, easy to detect. But the moment you poke them or get too close to the girl they are protecting, they just go absolutely apeshit and start pulverizing everything in their path on their way to rip you apart. Going from atmospheric horror to a brutal showdown against a hulking behemoth with a giant drill causes such a jolt in you that it is easy to get swept up in the battle.
    Of course, after that you start hunting more Big Daddies for the upgrades and the thrill of more crazy showdowns against some of the most challenging and fun enemies in the game.

    • @DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames
      @DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames  2 роки тому +5

      Can’t imagine actually hunting the
      Big daddies. They are intimidating 😨

    • @anthonygranziol7957
      @anthonygranziol7957 Рік тому

      @@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames The trick to fighting one is to prepare. Max out your health, get plenty of ammunition that can pierce their armour, and use the environment to your advantage. Is water nearby? Prepare to electrocute. Any oil patches around? Be ready to set them ablaze. A Big Daddy will come after you with single-minded intent, so use that intent against your foe.

    I love Bioshock and I'd love to watch you guys play the games! A slight note that was only slightly touched on, the Alpha Series Big Daddies were successfully pair-bonded with a single little sister. However, they were only considered failures because under the circumstances that the little sister would die, the big daddies bonded to them would become catatonic or go on rampages. They literally could not function correctly without their original little sister.

    Alpha series also turn crazy and sometime just randomly die from heart attack if they are separated from their Little sister for too long. They were also so unstable that when you try to control it, their former mind still intact and could just ignore the order they were given. Yet they are so fast and full of various arsenal, so some even consider it to be the most dangerous type of all of them.
    Rosie also seems to be the easiest big daddy to create, as people can just put on the suit and become one themselves. The process might be painful at one part, but the rest is so easy that you can just turn yourself back to a normal human
    Big Sister will always have red helmet light on, due to the process of making them from little sister will make them loose their mind completely, hence why they will always be aggressive to their target.

    Honestly, the world of Bioshock is one of the most interesting ever created and I highly recommend you watch "The rise and fall of Rapture" which gives a very good look at the city and lore in detail.
    As an extention I would also recommend the companion video detailing the rise and fall of Columbia from Bioshock Infinite, which is an entirely different beast.

    The Bioshock is a seminal series in video games, something I like to call a dystopian genepunk sci-fi. It's one of the few video games that I cry over the endings, and a series that everyone should play, similar to Fear Effect, F.E.A.R., GTA, Gran Tourismo, Mass Effect, Super Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Warcraft/Starcraft, Overwatch, Metroid, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Doom, Silent Hill and Journey,

    A classic the original had never played something like it but damn the stuff with the little sisters and big daddies really pushed my moral compass up the wrong way and yes I did save the little girls and killed the big daddies. Needless to say it was worth it in the long run even if I was killed repeatedly over and over again. The good ending of the game left me moved too and I was glad it had that effect though the words "Would you kindly" will always stick with me. Fantasic game the original.

    In terms of the Bioshock Trilogy they all deal with different Ideologies taken to the extreme. Bioshock 1 looks at Objectivism with the leader Andrew Ryan. Bioshock 2 focuses on Ulititarianism with its leader Sophia Lamb. And Infinite is all about Exceptionalism seen in its leader Zackary Comstock.
    Visually the series is tied together with there being a fantastical city, a lighthouse to get to said city, and a tyrannical leader running it.
    There also is a good deal of engine punk with the bigger Enemies: Big Daddies and Big Sisters in the first two games and Songbird, Handyman, and (arguably) Boys of Silence in Infinite.
    The games end up being very interesting studies of philosophy and human nature and are relatively short games so highly recommended.

    Bioshock is such an interesting series for its meta-commentary on gaming, philosophy, and politics. Probably one of the best examples of "gaming as art." My favorite is 2 even though it was brushed aside during release and most people believe 1 and Infinite are better.
    For Infinite, I won't explain much in case you guys do a journey through Bioshock (highly recommended!) but Infinite may be just as dark if not more than the other two. It hides it well in the trailers and with the light colors but Infinite takes place in an early 1900s America where racism is front and center. There are A LOT of racial slurs and graphic scenes involving lynching, massacres, executions, etc., but the game's focus isn't so much on race as it is on gaming, philosophy, and economics like the first 2. Honestly, some might disagree with this statement, but it seems to be that the political commentary in the 3 games is sort of set up for the deeper philosophical meta-commentary about choice and free will, just using the backdrop of atheist capitalism, theistic communism (a paradox but the game does this intentionally), and fascistic perverted Puritanical American thought.
    The Big Daddies are some of the most iconic gaming entities ever! In the first game, you play as an ordinary man who injects himself with ADAM and plasmids (energy vials that rewrite your DNA to allow you to shoot lightning, fire, and ice, develop telekinesis, create bee hives in your arms, or the heart-shaped orbs you saw in the video that allow you to hypnotize people) to escape the city. In the second game, you play as the original Big Daddy, Subject Delta, who's on a quest to find his Little Sister - who's all grown up - named Eleanor. Delta is such a good character even though he doesn't speak, and I find him an interesting contrast to Jack from Bioshock 1 who's meant to be a stand-in for the player. In Infinite you play Booker DeWitt who's this hardboiled noir detective type taking the most insane job to escape some debt. I won't say more because the story of Infinite - even if I really don't like the gameplay - is a treat.
    Another lore recommendation I have is to learn about the Big Sisters. They're the main enemies of Bioshock 2 and are Little Sisters that have matured and been placed in similar experiments as the Big Daddies to act as a secondary protective measure against Splicers taking the Little Sisters. They're basically a Big Daddy but faster, stronger, more intelligent, and capable of using plasmids.

    Oh yeah, this series is dark, but great. It’s always still a great feeling to see new/non-gamers learn & appreciate worlds/stories/characters we grew up experiencing. That videos games are truly a worthy as a medium of story telling/art like TV & film. You can also see why they’re addicting, they take you to different worlds (if you REALLY want to get fun/imaginative, different alternate universes that might actually exist and are playing in lol) with its own lore, history, lovable & despicable characters, experience end world ending or creating events, pure absurdism, horror, adventure, action, discovery, wonder, beauty etc.

    Good video, and it is a lot of info all at once. Unfortunately, a good portion of the first two games is the telling of this story. By doing these lore type videos you are penalized a bit, because the true sense of wonder at the story told in the games, by playing, is slowly eroded and whilst still cool, it's not quite as cool as being blind when playing.
