No they are harmless they just look big and menacing I catch them all the time pine forest are the best place for them and its not a stinger it's for laying it's eggs into the tree it uses that for burrowing a hole and you can hear them coming it sounds like a mini chanook ha ha
that bums me out cause i just killed like six of them that were in my home... i'm deathly afraid of anything that stings and these things look deadly... they are coming out of a pile of firewood we have near the fireplace... guess the stinger lookin thing is just for show. sure scared the shit outta me...

I don't think these are dangerous but a huge one was on my drivers side door today when I got in the car.scared the donkeys outta me.
these came out of our wood plile in our basement and creeped the crap out of me

The first time I saw one of these I shat myself. I found out later that they don't have stingers.
