Clarice was so underrated and this is one of the best Bollywood routines the shows ever had! Melanie was the chosen one this season so I feel like Clarice’s talent was overlooked. If not then Melanie could’ve had some serious competition
My thoughts exactly, but you expressed it in such a perfect way. I always get kind of disappointed with the SYTYCD dancers when it comes to the bollywood part. Few of them get it right. This performance though, is one of the best, both have this folk, festive flavor. A fluency that makes the dance look natural and not stiff and tight.
One common thread among almost all the Bollywood dances on this show is the stiffness of the dancers. Bollywood dance is steeped in the myriad Indian classical dances which, without exception, are all graceful and fluid. What in the West is considered graceful in a Viennese Waltz, a Flamenco or a ballet would be rated "wooden" in India. This might explain why so many of the dancers who perform on Bollywood tunes get eliminated. The audience expects a different kind of "fluidity" and "grace".
The point of this competition is to try different styles of dancing. Also the core grass has their own take on different types of dances. They did enough for the hand symbols so that not offending anybody but the death is are not exactly going to be exactly like India. This will be a fun dance to learn and the part about dancing it is putting your own spin in it. Just remember the choreographers has their own ways and their own spin of it and that's what you're seeing. So the dance may not be exactly like the dances is that coming from India. I saw the dances come India on UA-cam and I think they're the same except for this may be a little faster choreographers try to make certain types of dance their own by making it a spin out of it.
Jamie Horne hi. while I understand that everyone has their own interpretation of dance styles, Nakul is far far far from what Bollywood dancing is. He has capitalised on a market that loves anything 'exotic', different, foreign, and is desperate to be 'inclusive'.
You forget dancing is performing art there is a different interpretation of swan like a couple times and the Nutcracker. I'm different types a modern dancing but this is just art. If you're promoting TV shows then you need to do it a positive so that people will want to see it. Dancing is different because it's an art form and people's interpretation of art is different too. I bought a painting that was supposed to be the star of night it's a slightly different than star tonight but I still bought it cuz I like it. People are going to do things differently just got to get used to it and stop complaining about it dancing is a form of Art and art has it own way of doing thing
Jamie Horne I completely agree with you that art has its own interpretation. and if you read my comment you would know that Bollywood is the least rigid form of dance there is. the technicality or the style of steps or even the hand gestures that you mentioned in the previous comment bear no value. Bollywood dancing is essentially about the feel, the drama, the emotions, the give you create. both with expressions and body language. without that it's an aerobics cardio session. please do take the time out to check out some of the videos I have linked. as far as not offending anyone with incorrect hand gestures and finger positions goes, that is not even a part of Bollywood dancing. It's classical Indian dance forms (not even close to Bollywood dance) that demand correct hand gestures. nakul talks crap and people buy it.
Jamie Horne Indian dance forms can broadly be classified into three categories. 1. Bollywood (that I have explained in my previous comment) 2. Folk and Tribal Dance forms - These are dances that originate in communities from a particular state. they dance to express joy, happiness and celebrate different festivals and events (like the birth of a child, the first rains, first harvest, marriage etc) and each has a distinct style, costume, hairstyle, movement that is peculiar to the people of that state or community. The difficulty level can range from extremely basic to difficult. The people often provide their own music by singing along with musicians who play instruments around them. Again while they don't score high on difficulty, they are bursting with feeling, emotions, vitality and spirit. 3. classical dance forms - shastriya nritya - these are 7 forms of style (some consider 8). most of these originated as temple dances as a form of worship. they are taught extensively. including the music, rhythm, instruments, theory and history of the dance and the stories, myths, concpets that different pieces are based on. they are bhartnatyam, mohini attam, kuchipudi, Manipuri, Kathak, Kathakali, oddisi. (sattriya is considered by some in this list as well) aspects of classical dance usually can fall in three umbrellas. nritta - rhythm / beat/ musicality nritya - communicating via movements natya - story telling. can be done by a team of dancers. or once dancer performing multiple roles. certain characteristics common to all classical forms are - mudras/hastas - hand symbols ( that are supposed to be correct belong to this category of dances, not Bollywood) - abhinaya - carrying to the audience the state of mind that the pieces are meant to via an amalgamation of the body mind heart -ras - sentiment - bhava - mood (yes. sentiment and mood and state of mind are conveyed differently to the audience which is why it takes years for these forms of art to be learnt. it's not the steps alone. and which is why when Sytycd gets an uneducated choreographwr like Nakul who says hand gestures are important in Bollywood, I can't keep from commenting )
I think you missed the part about the show it's about these dancers doing things that aren't there style of dancing. Choreographers and dancers put their own spin off on those dances. And by the way I looked at dance up is actually from a movie. Indian dancing is quite different if you actually sit down and actually Google it and watch it on UA-cam the actual dances is different. But once again it's not about the crow graph or the dance is so it's about these dancers doing dances that they're naturally don't do when they actually are professional dancers. It's about trying different styles of dancing and make it your own. But you're taking this too far. For those of us who never seen Indian dancing we think this dance is cool looking and it's amazing these dances can actually do it. I would love to go to India and actually see an Indian dance. But it's fun when you actually go to the country and learn about that culture and see the dances I got from legal dancing in Spain and it was cool. America's style of dances a little different than going to a different country and seeing them. Just like that the Chinese restaurant is a little different than the actual food in China trust me I've been to China also you become a pretty much a vegetarian when you pull out a bunch of bone out of your meat. Is the Indian culture wants to show this type of dances they need to have a special show that we can see different types of country is performing actual dances but that's not what the shows all about the shows about dancers doing styles that they naturally don't do when they actually dance so you missed the part about this is show . it's not about the or the dances it's about the about the dancers getting out of their comfort zone and shows what they really can do. But if you're taking this car if you're taking the dance way too seriously then maybe this is not a good show for you to watch or you're really criticizing these dancers who are amazing athletes. If you don't dance you have no idea what these people are going through so you're being disrespected to them and they're trying to be respectful for the Indian culture by not screwing at the hand gestures.
I don't want to misjudge, but they seem latin to me, or at least latin flavor from some part of the family or something. My experience is that, in general, latin dancers perform bollywood very well.
This is not Bollywood. It's some jumping. Some thrusting. Some more jumping. I don't hate it, I find it an amusing misrepresentation of what Bollywood dancing is. Amusing because it hasn't been corrected after all these performances on sytycd have been criticised so much and so many people bring attention to its inaccuracy. Bollywood is actually difficult to define and pin down as it draws from a variety of dance forms and cultures ( both Indian and global). The choreographies aren't always technically correct and true to form. However Nakul of sytycd and various other dance groups outside of India have brought Bollywood down to a restricted bunch of high energy moves that are executed with only hard hitting force by dancers dressed in the token colourful clothes. It is as inaccurate as it can get. Even for a style that actually has no definition as such. He totally missed put on the part where the dancers need to be graceful and expressions are VITAL to the performance. There is no denying the synchronisation and difficulty of some of these choreographies. But it is simply not what Bollywood is. Nakul Mahajan's choreography is painful to watch. He's done 4 decent routines on this show: Katee and Joshua's routine in season 4, an all-girl group routine in season 5, Nathan and Mollee in season 6 and Robert and Billy in season 7. He overdoes everything from the costume (look at that horrendous thing around Robert's neck) to the dance itself which very often has a lot of classical elements where it's not at all appreciated. SYTYCD should start looking for better Bollywood Choreographers.
Clarice was so underrated and this is one of the best Bollywood routines the shows ever had! Melanie was the chosen one this season so I feel like Clarice’s talent was overlooked. If not then Melanie could’ve had some serious competition
Robert absolutely demolished this routine - amazing! Good on Clarice for keeping up and looking stunning throughout
this routine was so cute!!! clarice looked the part and shouldn't have left after this routine. and robert just gets bollywood :)
this is one of the best bollywood songs that have been chosen in SYTYCD. they did a great job.
Out of all the bollywood dances on american tv shows i've seen, this one stays the most true to the style of bollywood.
This is the best Bollywood performance in SYTYCD history. I think it will be so in a long time too!
SIX years later and I still haven't seen a more well danced Bollywood routine!
Their energy is pretty darn good on that dance floor.
definitely one of top 3 bollywood performances on SYTYCD
This is perfect! So infectious!!!
ROBERT E es uno de los bailarines más guapos que ha pasado por el programa que guapo es
I think Billy and Robert's routine is the best . Period .
WOW!! I love this dance, Im so excited for Melanie, I voted to try to keep clarice, but unfortunately she left.
Nice folk moves there...I liked the fusion tough ....its gives a fresh look overall ..
OMG This is the only Girl on SYTYCD who can totally dance like a feisty indian dancer.
I sometimes forget how ridiculously handsome Robert is :D
I ´ve never liked Robert so much, but his performance here is outstanding, as is Clarice´s.
Robert, my fav of all time :">
They look so tan!! when I was watching this I thought Robert looked like a dancing Aladdin. :P
My thoughts exactly, but you expressed it in such a perfect way. I always get kind of disappointed with the SYTYCD dancers when it comes to the bollywood part. Few of them get it right. loved clarice!!! sad she went home.
@confooseddesi6089 Thank you for saying exactly what was on my mind. What did Nigel say about this dance..and the kiss?
I love this dance!!!!
like how brandon can be a disco dancer and lauren frodie can be a ball room dancer, robert can be a bollywood dancer
i still think katee and joshua's Bollywood dance is the best
one question, i hope you all remember ashley galvan from season 7.
werent she and robert like together?????
please answer, i am really excited :)
@createallow3126 The name of the singer is "Daler Mehndi" and the song is from the hit bollywood movie - "Khatta Meetha " .
I love the music too. anybody know the artist? That guys voice is so rich.
Hey Clarice- Robert is tryna get at you (in case tyou didnt notice) LOL!!! Was sad to see her go.
@hardnocks24 Thank you so much! Very sweet of you. :)
nice dance
i think, the song choice makes a lot of difference.
