    When I was a teenager Circle X Ranch was owned by the Boy Scouts of America, if memory serves me correctly. This was in the 1960's. We used to go to the grotto every time we camped at Circle X. We only went there in the fall, winter and spring. The amount of water flowing through there in your video is incredible. That amount of water is highly dependent on very heavy winter precipitation and you might only see that amount of flow every 20 years. I was last there in 1973, a good winter and there wasn't nearly that amount of water. I've hiked there in the summer of some dry years and only found stagnant water in the "caves." 2017 was the record year for snowfall in the Sierra and we received over 30 feet of snow in our driveway. This was just a bit more than 1983 the previous record holding year.
    I think that the National Park Service needs more funding to purchase more land in the Santa Monica Mountains. The Land and Water Conservation Fund is obtained from money collected from federal oil and gas leases. Conservatives tend to oppose spending this money, favoring that it be used to balance the budget, but that was not the intent of the law passed to provide funding for long term public needs. The more the spending is delayed the higher the price the land sells at. In addition a lot of land is lost to development as a result of not buying it when the opportunity is there.
    One thing I remember about Circle X is the mountain above it, which we called the "Sleeping Indian." The entire ridge top forms a profile of what looks like a native American man lying on his back. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to see.
    Thanks for posting this video. I'm in my late 60's now and this is a bit of a trip down memory lane.

      Split rock, we used to call it. Then you’d end up down where the creek runs through and Ladybugs were everywhere..As I recall, there was even an out house built from the natural woods. The actual split rock was a huge boulder that was split in half by a tree.. I also recall you can yell across the canyon are about halfway along the trail and hear your echo

    • @wannabetowasabe
      @wannabetowasabe 3 роки тому

      @@Eddiego100 I forgot the echo! As soon as I read your last sentence a memory popped right into my mind of yelling at a certain point along the trail. Fantastic!

    Great video. I love the Santa Monica Mountains and Malibu Canyon. I live in San Diego but I'm in LA a lot visiting my in-laws and love to get out and hike.

    You might like Stoddard Canyon Falls, has a natural slide and is just off Baldy Rd. I have to put my video together for that hike, but it was one of the most amazing places I just learned about, after driving by it for the past 30 years unknown down in the canyon below Baldy Village. This place in Malibu looks so cool! Thanks for putting this video together.

      @JesseStLouis  7 років тому

      Jesse St Louis went Saturday, lots of water, great experience. Had to walk up the creek through the water after a point. Want to go back for a swim.

    • @JesseStLouis
      @JesseStLouis  7 років тому +1

      So was the flow too much to be able to do the slide?

    • @miis05
      @miis05 7 років тому +1

      It might be. But I think a good swim is in order :) And, because the weather is still cool and navigating the canyon with so much water requires some fancy footwork, I was completely alone. Once summer comes and the water levels recede, I expect more crowds, so now could be a great time. And, I personally enjoyed the adventure even going up and down the canyon barefoot once skipping rocks became impossible. I will also add, supposedly there are other falls in Stoddard Canyon, some noting this is actually in San Antonio canyon but so named because it is near Stoddard-Barret Rd. And there is a cool gingerbread house on the road...hansel and gretel in the woods kind of moment. Pharroah has a video of it on his channel.

    Beautiful! Love the video . How hard would this be for a beginner or someone with planters fasciitis? How many miles did you go and is it mostly uphill?

      It's downhill all the way to the Grotto so uphill the whole way back. It's a good beginner hike but best for after rain so it's flowing.

    Hi, Jesse, great videos you have made! Have you ever heard of "Cataract Falls" in San Dimas? It is down the creek just below Raging Waters. It has a do not enter sign but I'm sure people still go there and jump when it is running high. There are some UA-cam videos of it- check it out!
