Glenn L. Martin Baltimore, in cooperation with the US Navy Patrol, Squadron 49, presents a 1950’s era, color movie called, Look to the Sea. Produced by Information Services; Joseph M. Rowland, Mgr. Written and Directed by Donn Hale Munson. Photography by Lee T. Dougherty. Edited by Frank A. Maniglia. Technical Advisement by Ens. D.P. Arrowsmith, USNR. The film is a promotional film for the Martin M6M SeaMaster. The Martin P6M SeaMaster, built by the Glenn L. Martin Company, was a 1950s strategic bomber flying boat for the United States Navy that almost entered service; production aircraft were built and Navy crews were undergoing operational conversion, with a service entry about six months off, when the program was cancelled on 21 August 1959. Envisioned as a way to give the Navy a strategic nuclear force, the SeaMaster was eclipsed by the Polaris submarine-launched ballistic missile. Due to the political situation at the Pentagon, the Navy promoted the P6M primarily as a high speed minelayer.

Martin tried unsuccessfully to market the technology in the civilian market, with a version called the SeaMistress but there were no takers, and the company soon abandoned the aircraft business entirely to focus on missiles and electronics. The P6M was the final aircraft constructed by the Glenn L. Martin Company.

Actually, this film has about 90% of its footage showing the U.S. Navy P5M-1 Martin Marlin patrol seaplane. The little over a minute remaining has shots of Martin's revolutionary XP6M SeaMaster jet seaplane bomber which first flew on July 14, 1955. The SeaMaster was intended to give the U.S. Navy a jet bomber capable of delivering conventional and nuclear bombs. It was plagued with numerous issues in its testing period with the first one crashing killing all onboard. Sadly, despite a total of 16 being built (two crashed in the test stage), the Navy's SSF program (Strategic Striking Force) which was based on the success of the P6M, was cancelled a few months before most of these aircraft were to become operational toward the end of 1959. They were basically Navy budget victims of Polaris missile submarines and Forrestal Class super carriers that were up and coming at the same time. The remaining SeaMasters were eventually all scraped.

Nice promo on the P5M-1.... Seeing as the title was about the P6M, it would have been nice to see more of it than just a quick passing mention.

All the filming of the Seamaster jet was done in the Chesapeake Bay and Middle River outside of Baltimore Maryland. Several of the factory building are still in use to other companies and the seaplane ramp is still there. Years ago they had a Seadart sitting in the corner of one of their factory buildings and I was there for a EAA Fly In so that's where I strapped my hammock between the ski struts for the weekend. Sleeping under a piece of aeronautical history.

Not much on the P6M but there were many good views of the P5M Marlin. I saw Marlins flying in support of Market Time ops in Vietnam. I believe the seaplane tender in Cam Rahn Bay was the USS Currituck at the time. The aircraft always looked ungainly to me but since I had never seen seaplanes before, I found them interesting. Always wanted to go out on a few missions with them.

Such a dramatic video about warfare that never existed. The P5M came into service in 1952 and never bombed any submarines... ever

Awesome video. Another reason the P6M was canceled was the Polaris Submarine

I had a good look at a P6M in early '59 while picking up a P5M from Martic that had been overhauled and retro fitted with Julie/Jez and new radio/nav gear. It was a sweet looking beast. And no, finding subs wasn't that easy.

It's baffling that the 5-sided funny farm didn't think that seaplanes in general and a seaplane strike force was a good idea.

Easy Able 3 would make a good long range Search an Rescue airplane. Helicopters are great but lack range and capacity but don;t have to deal with rough seas like the airplane would.
