  • “The fundamental problem of humanity is that we have palaeolithic emotions, medieval institutions, and God-like technology.” - E. O. Wilson.
More than ever, we need the wisdom to match the power of our God-like technology. Yet, technology is both eroding our ability to make sense of the world, and increasing the complexity of the issues we face. The gap between our sense-making ability and issue complexity is what we call the “wisdom gap.”
How do we develop the wisdom we need to responsibly steward our God-like technology?

What can I do to help Tristan?
For a long time, I've been interested in the work of the Center for Humane Technology and The Consilience Project. I've brought up the wisdom-complexity-gap many times during conversations with people I know when it was appropriate and noticed two key friction points:
(Point 1) The issue is so complex and far beyond their comprehension of 'reality'. In other words, their sense-making capacity is simply inadequate to understand the issue without investing reasonable time and effort out of their own volition when there is no short-term benefit/gain (e.g. money) or consequence (e.g., bad grade). Unfortunately, the majority of
(Point 2) people are aware of social media's potential harms (e.g., mental health), but most simply don't care beyond the media's framing of a "declining mental health in teenagers." Most people are concerned with what they are doing/working on right now, such as a job, education, hobby, and raising their children, rather than the (second and third order) consequences of their actions.
Our culture appears to be in a race to the bottom, and not enough people seem to care or understand to alter its course. The whole situation is analogous to the saying - fish don't know they're in the water.

Very valuable insights on those two points. I agree and take your ideas onboard for further processing! EDIT: I love that you specify "when appropriate" in describing your conversations. It goes to show that you have an understanding of the complexity of the topic as well as an understanding of how good communication can be created. Hi-five from Oslo.

So this may sound crazy, in 2020 I tried to design a pact that would set aside the greed drive and replace it with a collective advancement. Of course, such a pact was unbelievable to everyone because how could I not want the power? Anyway, I'm a game designer, trying to re-direct the human mind back to a level of greater self awareness and use the funds to fix our global issues. Step one is free education for all. Step two is planet recovery, replacing our waste cycle. Step three is liberation, creating a system that allows the individual the maintain their rights while directing compromise between parties. I'd love to find more alike minds to try again. The hope that someday we can unify through our differences is the only thing that matters to me anymore.

    • @lucas.mathias
      @lucas.mathias Рік тому

@@daniellerosemary9614 Very interesting what you mention about the pact. I think about this a lot. In our current social system (talking about western society here) we have contracts that legitimise marriage, economic exchanges and private property, identity, etc. We don't have contracts that legitimise things like friendship, community, ecological/social responsibility + rights to food/shelter, community resource usage + creative impulses, daily life barter type exchange, etc.
I think if the legal system represented the things that are important to me like our friends, our families, our planet, our body, our mind, our craft... I personally would be way more interested in it, and willing to get involved even.
What I think I'm trying to say is that this thing of a pact, could be one way to start from the ground up. To device new categories that help us define our relationship with the world we are starting to live in. To include as many perspectives as possible, that can represent as many realities as we can think of.
My hope is that these ideas start appearing in the mainstream of information and end up part of our institutions somehow.
      greetings from Barcelona.

The fundamental problem of Humanity is that innate human abilities have not been developed and remain dormant.
We humans can rise above our natural 'Paleolithic emotions’ with the development of our conscious awareness and metacognition. With the right teachings we can develop advanced abilities; metacognition, self- and emotional-regulation, conscious awareness, 'flow-state', upregulation...
Sophrology is a little known practical mind-science for developing advanced cognitive abilities to orders of magnitude higher than it is currently.

In this video essay, wisdom is defined as "making sense of the world at the level of complexity of the world." OK, if the problem is that the world is more complex, and the solution is "wisdom," which is to say, "well, we need to make sense of it, ..." ...
...that strikes me as (A,) tautological, and therefore, (B,) not a very good (or meaningful) definition of wisdom.
What is wisdom? Zizek, I think rightly, critiques "wisdom" as modern ideology: phrasings that sound deep and profound because of the right pathos used in invoking this "wisdom," but containing little substance in itself. The images of "wise elders" and "thoughtful deliberation" peering into the future through mystical powers is great and all, but I don't think it's a realistic answer to our world situation. "Everything old is new again" but we sure do seem to have a lot of new things happening and we have to deal with it in our (re-)new(-ed) context.
I think we need to (A) pick sides: pick philosophies, and associated courses of action or inaction, (B) be willing to be wrong, and willing to work within wrong philosophical frameworks and to take fatally mistaken courses of action, (C) be forgiving of the mistakes of ourselves and others, as we see the unpredictable fruits of our philosophies and actions, and (D) try and pay attention to what is happening in the world as a consequence of our chosen path of philosophy and action (or inaction,) -- and be willing to change lanes in response to what is happening.

Brilliant. Just one comment - at 5:34 when you refer to the conversation with the OpenAI model I noticed that you refer to it as "He". In my opinion that adds a level of semantics that can be confusing and goes right to the centre of the current controversy about sentience. OpenAI - until further notice - is an "It", not a "He". I'm not necessarily taking a definite stance on the sentience-issue here, I'm just trying to be cognizant of the importance of semantics in good communication as well as the topic of anthropomorphization - which can be occluding to the whole discussion.

@@KarlMagnusBlindheim Sorry Karl, the limits of this depleted communication format. What I meant is that the situation is really desperate, while we try to fix this ship the METAVERSE is accelerating and Governments and economic actors are being seduced (again) in the name of "innovation and economic growth" and the Big Tech imposed (and lobby money) is preventing leaders to sit down an remove the conditions that allowed the chaos. The situatio is really desperate, so priorities shift and bringing the message across becomes the most important thing.

@@digitalhuman2768 I know, right? According to researcher Albert Mehrabian communication between people is 55% nonverbal, 38% vocal, and only 7% are the words themselves. That means that we're missing out on 93% of the signal! Depleted communication format indeed.
In my personal opinion, Zuckerberg's "Metaverse" will fail and get choked out in its infancy. The new paradigm is augmented reality, not virtual. The difference being that the Metaverse will be an immersive experience where one is shut out from the physical world and controlled by "Meta" (sigh) - the matrix-metaphor in action. The real future will be happening in augmented reality, where the virtual becomes a layer on top of our real-world senses. The technology will raise a lot of new issues and challenges for us as humans but it won't happen the way Zuckerberg wants it to.
In six months Apple will announce their own take on VR and AR. According to industry insiders it will change the game. My question is what part we as users will play in it. I'm not an Apple fanboy and have never owned a mac. But if you ask me to choose the lesser of two evils, Apple's business model is not based on advertising. I just have a real problem with all things "proprietary" and hope that the hackers and builders out there will accelerate development as well.

When Tristan says that wisdom is making sense of the world at the level of complexity of the world... I think he's missing that we can never achieve this - to do so would be omniscient. You don't need to know everything to make wise decisions. Wisdom takes knowledge and aims it to productive and positive use. Ex. based on our knowledge of the dangers corporate organizations have wrought on human society unchecked, wisdom tells us to be skeptacle on an individual level and establish regulatory agencies as a group. Requiring every minute detail to make a decision is the opposite of wisdom, naivete.
