Hi guys, thanks for all the comments! I forgot to check it out. Receipts: Osterman's Collodion negative is 2gr of CdBr, 5gr KNO3. 220ml of 4% collodion, 140 ether, 140 alcohol. Developer 2gr of FeSO4, 8ml of glacial acid, 8ml of alcohol and 100ml of water Redeveloper: 1) Iodide treatment 1,5ml of iodine tincture into 40 ml of water 2) Pyro developer: 1gr of pyro acid, 6gr of citric acid and 350 ml of water Salt print: Seizing: 15gr of gelatin + 15 gr of ammonium chloride + 1000 ml of water Sensitizer: 15% of AgNO3 + few drops of acid to make between 2pH and 3pH. Gold toner: To make stock solution: 1gr of gold chloride into 155ml of distilled water. Then you take 10ml of stock solution and put it in 700ml of distilled water and add half a small spoon of baking soda, so it becomes 8-9 pH. Fix it with 15% of thiosulfate, freshly made. Don't use old fixer, it will make a print go yellow years later. Wash for half an hour. If you have washaid, even better. Fixir in paper will deteriorate your print years later. Good luck!
I'm happy to see someone using an ice-fishing hut as a portable dark room! I've been thinking they would make a great portable dark room and I won't hesitate to grab one next time they go on sale.
Amazing! I just started learning Darkroom photography as part of my studio elective and was curious on the Wet Plate Collodion technique. I've been shooting digital for most of my works, so currently I am re-learning to shoot the analog way. This is by far the most simplest way of understanding the whole collodion and salt print process. Thank you for sharing. Cheers from Singapore!
Wow, 15 min exp time, and 5 min in bath thats very interesting. I`ve never even thought of trying that for density but i will. I have same Vageeswari 10 X 12. Very interesting and informative video. Also i`m getting one of these tents, i fell in love with it, i`m gonna sleep in it with my camera when i stay away. Happy new year Borut.
That is also very interesting, thank you for sharing the information this is how we all learn. Do you have any ideas on how i can bring my bath down from 20 PH at least this is what my meter is telling me! If the reading is very high, what method would you use to bring it down? Thanks for any help.
Those Vageeswari cameras are great. I have several, more actually, went a little over the top so to teach workshops. Dry plate is my thing, Liquid light is used. Never got as far as making my own emulsion yet. I also attended classes at the Rochester Inst.
+Michael Carter indeed! I have a dry collodion & printing workshop in two weeks, if you're interested. But of course the best workshops are in GEH, Rochester. www.topshitphotography.com/workshops/13-wet-dry-plate-collodion-negative/
Hi Borut, I just wanted to thank you for sharing your knowledge and art, it has been lovely watching your videos. Can I please ask where you got your tent and if you had to modify it, or if it was already light-proof? I want to set up a dark room at home and think this would be a really good idea for the space I have. Thank you.
I own two Kodak 3A 1910 cameras that can use glass plate, cut paper, and of no longer made roll film, but will work with 120. Where do you get your glass plates?
ISO is as name suggests, a standard. Wet plate collodion process was practiced before standards were introduced and even nowadays does not fit in any standard. ISO is simply a reference with today's wetplaters, but the sensitivity changes depending on the age of collodion, mixture of collodion, pH of silvernitrate and the spectrum of the light. In the case of this vlog it was green light, with almost no UV and pH was way too low (beginner's mistake), so exposure was very long. To answer your question, a photographer makes a guess, take a plate and then on the result corrects the exposure.
There are different developers and totally different concept between ambrotype and wet plate collodion negative. For ambrotype it's between 15 and 20 seconds - usually.
Amazing video Borut, thanks for sharing!! I wanted to ask you about the Beeswax, is it filtered, or pure beeswax?? I need to wax some cyanotypes that i did, and when i tried with pure beeswax and lavender oil, well, it turned out ok, but not as smooth as i was expecting.. I would be very greatful if you can help me with advice about it. :) Milosh
Milosh Mitich I don't know what to add. Heat up beeswax, add oil, mix it, cool it down, add more oil until is creamy. It comes with experience, so just make few more prints and it'll get better.

Check also my video about how to adapt it as a darkroom.
Borut, svaka čast! Izuzetna tehnika i izuzetan majstorluk. Samo nastavi tako.
Using the plexiglass support under the print, is an excellent way to remove the shadows cast by the tray. A quality improvement!
So good to see someone making old-school wonders! Greetings from Poland :-) Pozdrav :-)

Beautiful proces and beautiful print.
Fanstastic print and fantastic work!
This is so cool! This makes me want to get this type of setup! Thank you for posting this video! I'd hope to be a quarter as good at this as you are!
Really beautiful image. Nice to see an overview of the whole process.

Oh, my silverbath was very acidic! Like 2.2pH, so that's why it took so long time!

richard davenport Electric measure broken, of course it cannot be 20pH
Ha, ha... Yes. Electronic checkers need calibration every month or more

Absolutely amazing! So inspiring dude! Love it
Amazing sound. Thanks you so much for sharing, all the best not in your (not only) photographic life.
Wow seeing this process makes me want to do it even more, very cool and thanks for sharing 👍😊
Super amazing! Photography at it's best.
Agreed!
Thank you so much. This is an amazing technique.

You're welcome. Ebay. Google Eskimo Quickfish 3, I've made a video about it.
Hey! Super cool video. I was wondering: how did you mix the wax, and what kind of waxing pad do you use?
MigdalBaval there is no recipe, you heat up wax and then you add lavender oil as much as needed to get creamy kind of paste
Grazie mille! I will try to make new one this weekend.

I buy 2mm plates at any glass cutter
Great video Borut!
Great video, would you explain your wax and lavender recipe?
Jeff East there is no recipe, you heat up wax and then you add lavender oil as much as needed to get creamy kind of paste
well done mate! Magical work
Watching the darkroom work makes me miss it so much.
Yeah that's why I've decided to set up a darkroom again. Now I have my own UA-cam channel dedicated to film photography.

Nice! Good timing for a darkroom during the time off with the pandemic (that is, if you do).
@@huyked sure I am doing it. Manly developing films that were waiting in the fridge!!! Hehehe
Thanks for posting this video - it convinces me to stay working on salt prints. Can i ask what paper you use?
How do you know the exposure values particularly the ISO?
ISO is as name suggests, a standard. Wet plate collodion process was practiced before standards were introduced and even nowadays does not fit in any standard. So cool man, keep on your posting the nice story from your experience =)
This is really beautiful. How long have you been doing this, Borut?
Sebastián Ballestas I've been in photography for 31 years, but collodion and other 19th Century techniques I do for last 5 years. thx
Fantastic work! Congrats!!
Very inspiring! Thank you!
1:30s. for development? Is not that too much? I've heard that it must be at most 30s.

interesting so the second development kind of acted like solarizing a silver gelatin print?
really amazing process I love it.
No, this is different process. It's foremost a physical development, not chemical like silver-gelatin.
Thank you, kudos *****.
Great video, thanks for sharing.
Waiting to see it, thanks my friend.
Borut...me zanima kako posnetke uspešno digitaliziraš? Skeniraš, preslikaš...?
I use Fabriano F5 paper, that's 50% of cotton. 100% cotton papers don't do well with salt printing I've experienced.
Courious. How did you get your collodion to stay wet for 15 minutes? ;)
hm... I know some tricks of putting a wet towel over a camera, but in this case I haven't used any of it. It came out as you see it.
Came out beautifully! Thank you for all the love you give to the WPC community ;)
Birgit Maddox love is all I got... !-)
