ElkinsDIY.com Presents: Taking my boat for a spin on a sunny day on lake Union Washington. If you have a few tools and some skills I offer build plans here: elkinsdiy.com/...
Great work Paul! Im currently finishing up a 6'11 3/4" LWL, 21.5" BWL, pocket sailboat with a 10 ft mast and it is completely made from recycled reclaimed wood and hardwares. I must say, I have been watching this video over and over again in the past two years, and finally broke down and did something with all the stuff I had been collecting. Thank you so much for your inspiration, and I hope to send you a link to my vid as soon as im done with sea trials!! cheerio mate!
I had this on fiberglass clothed on the outside because I just used Lowes 1/4" three ply paneling which isn't truely 1/4. On my first boat I used 1/4" marine grade ply on the top and bottom, (5 ply) and just used 2 part epoxy clear resin on the outside. This lasted for many years. I later painted it.
My experience with boats: Always keep a set of paddles with you just in case the engine dies. They have extendable paddles for canoes that contract into a very short and easily storable length, and when you need them you just expand them to normal length and you paddle your way to safety as if you were in a canoe. After watching you get into that boat, the first thing I thought about was "Wow, that thing is definitely NOT WIDE ENOUGH, not wide enough for stability as far as rolling over in rough waves is concerned.
"you gonna ride in that thing?" I get the same comments at the ramp, lol - Nice job on your DIY power system and the way you rigged it. Great picnic boat! Thanks for the tour too. Fun video, cool boat!
hi everyone ,if anyone else wants to uncover build wooden boat plans try Joolaim Rudder Replication (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my cousin got great success with it.
Thanks Michael. Lots of people have a small assortment of tools, and when they see one of my simple contraptions, some think, 'hey, I can make that', and with a little help, I think most people can. That's my goal anyway.
I built a boat using the motor and steering system off of Pauls plans. but I had to make my boat a 2 seater for me and my daughter. We have a blast in it. Thanks for the inspiration Paul. My boat with my son 6' tall driving it. Trolling Motor Mini Boat
Most of the house boats are fairly permanent, and are towed if they have to be moved, which is probably rare. I've seen some that have outboards on the back, but I've never seen a boat taken out on the lake for a day outing. If you need help on the boat plan let me know.
I've watched plenty home built boats of all descriptions and this is by far top shelf. Aside from the boat construction itself, I'd love to know about the electric motor and how you built it so simplistic. I got to have one, that's all there is to it.
Hello from Australia, I think a lot of people have missed the gist of what Paul has done. I believe plans would be a mistake, he has given us the overall dimensions and photos to work from. I have started my boat a while ago and am three quarters through and when i need to work something out i just refer to Paul's pics or video. As Jon Doe said, you can make all sorts of personal modifications. I'm not criticizing those who need to work from plans, but am just saying give it a go. Cheers.
Very cool video. Thanks for sharing it. Love the boat design. I like the idea of Houses over water, but it simply will not work where I live. To many hurricanes hit my area. All I would add to the little boat would be rub rails.
Paul - That is awesome! Great idea. From your descriptions, it appears easy enough to build something similar or at least have fun experimenting with some design ideas.
That was a great video. I had never seen a small boat like that, except for maybe at an amusement park where several of them would go around a boat basin track. I would like seeing more of your adventures. I just wouldn't travel too far out to sea in the event you get caught up in a storm.
Hi Paul! Bought the plans, and my father and I are going to build a couple of Sally's. Brilliant work and can't wait to scoot around our lake in these. I'm doing the flat bottom version with slight upturn at the back, and going to add some roll up solar panels to the design.. Having too much fun and get stuck? No problem.. go fishing for a couple of hours to let it charge and head home. I'm obsessed with this dang thing. haha
Sounds great Michael. Be sure to send pictures my way. I'm sure people would love to see a solar assist version. I know I've always thought about it but never did.
I have mine finished now all but the final paint job. I have had it out several times and am happy with the results. Will post picture and videos later

Mr Elkins, you are a man of passion, taste & humor !
Damn that looks like fun, also your dress-code to drive the boat is a very nice finishing touch. I live close to the water and will be graduated from an art academies architectural studies soon. It would be a great follow-up project for me to design a one-man electric vessel :)
hey buddy, i was much inspired by your little electric boat, so today, ive started to build my own. alittle longer and wider than yours, but pretty much gonna be the same style. ill post pics as i progress! keep up the good work.
Oh this is so cool Paul! I really wanna make this and go on the lake! I would so be impressed if you made another one of these specifically to make a tutorial for one, cause I think a lot of people would make them, my self included! Or even patent them and sell them? Make a lot off of em
This thing is awsome man great job you have just inspired me to build one of these cause im a bass fisherman and i usually fish from bank and i really want something to get out on alot of the ponds i live near to get some better action and great job one again man!
Captains hat, nice touch, I built the corkey sailing inner tube from plans off the internet sea trials this afternoon, hope corkey sails well, if so will do a youtube on it.
Very cool boat! I see in some of those shots that you were pretty far from shore. How do you paddle back to shore after a motor failure? Hands? You should consider making a many-segmented foldable or telescoping kayak type paddle that folds up to about 1 foot long and stows between your legs for emergencies. Or consider carrying a large golf umbrella stowed between your legs to open and use for an emergency 'sail'. I've used a large golf umbrella as a sail to pull my 14 foot jon boat around and it actually pulls her around surprisingly fast in the slightest of breezes. (Also helps keep the hot sun from beating down on you while you're enjoying your fish n' chips!) I'll bet your beautiful little boat would really fly with an umbrella sail, even with the motor deployed and adding drag.
I have a wood paddle mounted on the side and have used it often. I was going to add a mast similar to my other boat but decided against it. I had the lower support and hole in the deck, but decided to add the front green and red light.
I've been planning on building a boat, actually i was planning on going to home depot tomorrow to buy lumber for it. I was planning on something quite a bit larger. that lake looks pretty protected, or you picked perfectly windless days to film, because around here we usually have 6" to 1' waves on even the calmest days. maybe i could modify your design a bit, large enough for 2 adults and a V hull design to handle the chop.
Wow always thought of this but never actually tried building one. My girls would love driving something like this around in the pond . Any information on framework design would be greatly helpful
I would add a solar pannel so it'll last longer. Also if you run out of juice, you just have to sit there for a few min to get a tiny bit of extra juice to get back. For a name for the boat, you could call it "WoodCraft". Howmuch did it cost you to build?
Very nice work, you made my day with this one. My son and I built a Cajun swamp boat together and have a blast with it way down here in South Texas. The electric motor would be nice on the windy days, and the days when we just get lazy. May I ask how long on a calm no wind day can you motor? We were considering retrofitting our boat with something similar. Thanks George
Love this little boat. How much does it draw with and with out the motor? I would not mind building something like this but a bit longer and wider so I can take my girl and some light camping gear for our weekend trips. We use my canoe now with a trolling motor but it is not that stable. I also swapped out the standard prop and put a RC plane prop on it and it seems to use a bit less power for the speeds.
You the great builder bro love you videos I was going to make a bike trailor out of a bike trailor for kid or a dog trailor thank tobyou for the idea 💡
Hi Paul, just got the plans for Little Miss Sally for the second time as I lost the files when my pc crashed in December. Anyhow, I wanted to confirm that the plans show that you only used 2 sheets of plywood for the bill of materials but the plans on page 19 show a 3rd sheet of plywood being used for the cap/deck.
Paul, I watched the documentary An Original Maker and visited the website. I really loved all the projects. I had to chuckle on the mini-bago name. I have to say the little boat is my favorite. I would like to ask a couple of questions. What type of wood was used? And it looks like the wood is curved on the bottom and sides, is that correct? One last question, how was the glassing done? Do you brush or spray on? Thank you. Your very inspirational.
2460 Westlake Avenue North was the address for the Sleepless in Seattle houseboat in the Lake Union area of Seattle, Washington, right next to Boatworld Marinas
Very nice, i heard you say invideo that you used wood glue in the seams to seal it, what did you use on the exterior, stain, varnish ect? for waterproofing the wood
Great work Paul! Im currently finishing up a 6'11 3/4" LWL, 21.5" BWL, pocket sailboat with a 10 ft mast and it is completely made from recycled reclaimed wood and hardwares.

What you say is very true for most people. Some won't acnowledge you, but some folks light up! They are the ones yerning for something different.
WARNING!!!
This boat should be used on rough water only! (lots more fun...)
non so se fai sul serio o prendi in giro il popolo ignaro dei pericoli a cui va incontro. NON FATELO, RISCHIATE DI ANNEGARE!!!!!!!!!
Nice boat sir. Where abouts in the world are you?

The filming was done on lake union just north of Seattle Washington USA
I reside about 60 miles north of Seattle. It's my favorite lake.
You are right it is a lot of fun when ride on it
spero che ti ascoltino, anche se è un messaggio pubblicitario.

Searspullingtractor3,
I know. But he had enthusiasm which is what counts, plus the plans are now available.
I launched the boat on Lake Union just north of Seattle Washington USA.
There are about 500 house boats in this area. Sorry about the audio.

hi everyone ,if anyone else wants to uncover build wooden boat plans try Joolaim Rudder Replication (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my cousin got great success with it.
Thanks Phil. It putts around for about 3 hours on a fresh charge.
A lot more efficient.
Thanks Michael. Lots of people have a small assortment of tools, and when they see one of my simple contraptions, some think, 'hey, I can make that',
and with a little help, I think most people can. That's my goal anyway.
Yes it is. Seattle Washington USA. This is Lake Union, located just north of downtown.

Paul you're really a jack of all trades. I really like your boat and outlook on everything.

If you need help on the boat plan let me know.
thankyou Paul, nice place, almost Veneza and your boat is such a think fenomenal
I just love how inspired the on lookers get when they seen your builds, great motivation.
I've watched plenty home built boats of all descriptions and this is by far top shelf. Aside from the boat construction itself, I'd love to know about the electric motor and how you built it so simplistic. I got to have one, that's all there is to it.

32 lb thrust minnkota chopped and controles routed to dash board. The boat weighs 65 pounds
Sir, your creations are just awsome! I mean Wow!
The motor is a cut down Minnkota trolling motor. I'm in the process of creating plans for this boat. They should be done very soon.
The skipper hat is a nice touch.
Lake union is just North of Seattle Washington State USA.
Prices of homes do cost a bit but they are going down due to the economy.
Awesome that you're out on the water having a good time for very cheap
45 knots. It's a fun ride.
I know. A shameless plug for Ivars and I'm not afraid to admit. Best Fish and chips in the North West!
It started off as a new Minkota 32? lb thrust motor. I did the alterations.
@millionaire1963
Thanks for watching Millionaire 1963. If you're into my neck of the woods this spring you're invited to come visit.
Hi Paul I also am in the Seattle area and I just love your little boat, totally looks like fun!
You are a genius, Paul. I absolutely loved your video and your boat.
Cool, watched it twice and now implanted in memory bank.
Absolutely Cool......I love it! Good job Paul.
I WAS WONDERING WHERE THOSE AWESOME HOUSE BOATS ARE

This is Lake Union just North of Seattle Washington USA

Mr Elkins, you are a man of passion, taste & humor !
Cool little boat. I would opt for a Polynesian style outrigger design for more stability.
Inspirational! Particularly like the balustrade
Paul, I love all your videos and project designs. I subscribed to you channel! Keep up the excellent work!
Damn that looks like fun, also your dress-code to drive the boat is a very nice finishing touch. I live close to the water and will be graduated from an art academies architectural studies soon. It would be a great follow-up project for me to design a one-man electric vessel :)

Thank for the kind words Zeke
Not bad English! Sorry, I will soon be selling plans for this boat, but not quite yet.
About 3.5 hours with a new deap cycle battery
Paul you should put a glass periscope or small window in the floor
Oh this is so cool Paul! I really wanna make this and go on the lake! I would so be impressed if you made another one of these specifically to make a tutorial for one, cause I think a lot of people would make them, my self included! Or even patent them and sell them? Make a lot off of em
I sell a pretty cheap 41 page PDF build plan for this boat on my website:

Minnkota 32 lb thrust electric trolling motor.
looks like a fun creek cruiser, I'd use a sealed battery if your not already
Very creative and skillful 100% nice!

what an amazing place to live to be able to wake up to that everyday must be awesome
Thank you for replying Mr. Elkins. Would you be talking about the Liberty flat bottom boat ?
Yes. Unfortunately instead of having a steering wheel I hastily added a long extension pole which made handling very scary at 10 or 12 mph.
cute boat. could you put a canopy or some sort of enclosure in case it unexpectedly starts to rain when you're out.
I've been planning on building a boat, actually i was planning on going to home depot tomorrow to buy lumber for it. Wow always thought of this but never actually tried building one. My girls would love driving something like this around in the pond . Any information on framework design would be greatly helpful
I plans for this boat for sale on my web site at www.elkinsdiy.com
Paul, I would be interested in the plans also. Thanks.
1/4 in ply is what he said was used, and will work great for this size craft. 3/8 will work as well..
I remember the captain in the 70's tv series Loveboat. From ship to a single passenger boat thats not exactly a promotion.
that is so frickin awesome. i need to make one
DANG!!! GREAT BOAT!!! I love the video too!
Thanks Loppnow3
lol i love it ..i hate being in a boat. but i think i would give this a go
I would add a solar pannel so it'll last longer. Also if you run out of juice, you just have to sit there for a few min to get a tiny bit of extra juice to get back.

Watch out!! Cpt Haddock on patrol. Love it though Paul
Dude! love your style

Hey Paul i was woundeing if you could make a video on how you hooked up the throttle on the trolling motor.
Brilliant! Looks like great fun to me.Creativity and individuality at its best. How long can you run on a charge?

Can u make a video of how you made the motor? I'd like to do that to mine too but I don't want to screw it up and ruin it.
