I almost forgot that Heather is an Olympic medallist. What a rare achievement. Would be really excited if Heather did a video taking us throught the entire experience of an athelete at the Olympic Games.
I have a suggestion. What If you guys make a video about triathlon levels of training for age groupers. Like, begginer, intermediate and advanced. The parameters could be volume (distance & time) and intensity. Obviously something in general lines. I was thinking about this topic some days ago.
Thank you Heather and GTN! I really look forward to your videos and I couldn’t tell you how much you’ve helped me. I completed my first triathlon last weekend and the information I got from your videos and website has helped immensely! Thank you!
Well done Heather!! Can't believe you fit this in with work and training for an ultra, that is so impressive. Just goes to show how much time and effort goes into these events, I couldn't fathom that kind of distance for a swim just for a training effort! Thanks for sharing this with us :)
Tri-athletes with a big swim background have this astonishing swim capacity that carries over into their triathlon career. That volume is crazy! Well done Heather (the Olympian) with a valiant attempt!
Thanks for the insight into the training Olympic athletes go through. Being an Olympic athlete is so much work and sacrifice and I don’t think I could keep up that pace of training, Heather. Thanks for doing all that training to show us what it takes!
To me you knocked it right out of the park. I got winded just reading the training plan. Bravo for go through that week. I love your videos and look forward to them. I'm just a senior and love training for triathlons but purely for the fun and the group participation at the races. Cheers.
Well done Heather. This just shows the reality behind being a full-time pro triathlete vs a regular person balancing a full-time job and heavy endurance training plus life. The later would make an interesting video almost every viewer could apprechieate.
Brilliant one Heather, I felt for you when you were having to work as well as the training. Hope PSN went easy on you as you were making some brilliant and inspiring content.
Thanks for sharing it. And for sharing emotions. Really gasped to see what incredible amount of swimming sessions mrs. Rappaport had in her schedule. And it surprised me at the end that for Heather looked like mora as a torture than a pleasure, at least what I perceived from the post training considerations.
How in the world is a 5.2km swim coupled with a 90 minute bike a recovery day?? Heather you're spot on! Any chance you could post the training plan? What an awesome video and psyched for more to come from the Olympics this week. I'm particularly curious how the athletes recover and subsequently resume their training post event. Would be a great follow up video. Also have a few questions: 1) Are most of the swim workouts done in the pool or open water? If the latter, how do you incorporate paddles and pull buoy? 2) How do you fuel during such a long swim? 3) Are the bike workouts done outdoors or on a trainer? 4) What are the paces/heart rate zones for easy runs? Thanks so much!
Triathletes must be mandated to do their cycling workouts on the road or at the very least an empty parking lot to also practice skills. That’s the law.
Wow, congrats heather!! Those workouts made me tired just hearing them!! And I always thought I’d love to be a pro athlete bc they get to be outside swim bike running all day - but wow, it’s a TON of work!
If you lived literally right next to an Olympic pool and a 400 meter running track and a warm clean lake with also great safe roads, the. It would be doable. Especially if you had weird hours were you actually work every day of the week but work shorter hours each day. Screw triathlons.
To the video editors of GCN (oops edit. GTN ;). Give Heather a pat on the back for making your life easy. Between the workouts and the bugs in the mouth and eyes, the number of f-bombs I would have dropped making this video would be a uncountable. Nice spot.
Hi. I'm the same as you. Specially now in COVID times. I'm afraid it is elastic bands, weights and the like, maybe a ZEN8. If you're really committed and want to reach the olympics or win races or at least a top 10 finish in your local races, I'm afraid its one of those Vasa Ergometer. Having said that. I suggest you look at the times that winners do in races. For example, if you can do 20km cycle in 30-35 minutes and run 5km in 20 (1km in 4 minutes or 15km/hour), then by all means, commit to a swimming ergometer, as you are justifying the expense. Perhaps if you belong to a Tri club, pool your resources together to buy one. But unless you can do the times in the cycle and run. Don't bother. I've done tri races and now I'm training to compete. Taking part is for beginners!! :-) :-) I can't tell how suuuuuper, hugely important recovery is. After each training session do either cycle or running for 10 or so minutes at 50% easy effort, near the bottom of your heart rate. Training (specially interval) creates a monster amount of toxins in your system and they need to be flushed out. I don't suggest you should too, but I take 3 little arnica tablets before going to sleep each night. 30C. Get them from Boots in the UK.
Just crazy. Cant even understand they have the energy levels for this. But thats what makes say cycling so crazy when you think about it. training what 2-5 hours a day for a week haha.
Considering that the swim part isn’t that big part of triathlon, it sure seems like they swim a lot. I watched Lionel Sanders video about his training plan and he was swimming an enormous amount
Though I believe Lionel focused on swimming because it was by far his worst discipline and it got harder and harder to make up his deficit on the bike and run.
Ridiculous schedule really, 5.2km swim on a rest day. Watching the race yesterday it was inspiring picturing the training each athlete had done just to be there.
GTN: we want you to do a video about training full time Also GTN: but still do your regular full time job. 🤦♂️ Seems like if you are going to make a video about training like an Olympian for a week you should actually do the workouts they are doing. Try again.
Doing more than necessary gives you the confidence and engines necessary to rock the event. Swimming lanes doesn't usually equate to the uncontrolled factors on race day: you might find yourself swimming way farther due to currents, lines taken, sighting, surrounding athletes, etc...
This video made me angry. You didn’t actually train like a triathlete for Tokyo as you are training for an ultra. You didn’t even do the first day, or the second!
I think that's part of the value. If someone as fit and trained as Heather can admit that something was too difficult and then explain exactly where the pain points are, I think it helps the rest of us put our training and pain in perspective. I found this really encouraging and instructive at the same time. Go make the video you want to see.
Which is more amazing as this goes to show just how unique these athletes are. They hurt physically and mentally just like you, I and Heather!!! They are masters of enduring, relentless achievement and time management. She did the first day and second to the best of her ability.
That is the stupidest training plan. I cannot believe that is what her coach is telling her to do. If so, she needs fine a new coach. Why are you swimming 5.2k three days a week when you are competing in triathlon? Cut half of that swim and hop on the bike. Or go to the gym and work on core and stability. Why would you run for recovery, when you can swim or bike for recovery? Lastly, what is with that funky volume and frequency distribution? I'm not saying I'm sport scientist or a coach, but anyone that has listened to few triathlon podcast knows that the plan is stupid. It's just so sad to see all that potential left at the table.
Because coaches know what they are doing. This is a pros peaking week for the Olympics, what was Heather expecting, something easy to fit into her full time job… You said it yourself, your not a sports scientist or coach..
@@yinyangbikepackingadventur4606 did you read my comment. I didn't say reduce volume. I just focus more on the bike and add some strength training. Do yourself a favor and learn how to read
You're forgetting this is ITU Olympic / Short Course racing. Who cares about your cycling ability??? You just need to be moderately "good enough". But for swimming you want to be great enough to be in the front pack out of the water! (and running... got to be super elite!)
I almost forgot that Heather is an Olympic medallist. What a rare achievement.
Would be really excited if Heather did a video taking us throught the entire experience of an athelete at the Olympic Games.
I wonder where she keeps the Olympic medal? Is it a big display in her living room or in her sock drawer 🙂.
Agreed! Would love a video walking us through her training and experience.
Doesn't that make all her training sessions "Training like an Olympian" by definition? 🤣
I have a suggestion.

“I know I am not an Olympian…” well actually
I want to train like a pro…
Day 1: I cant be bothered 😂
You're an absolute beast Heather, so inspirational watching this!
Thank you Heather and GTN! I really look forward to your videos and I couldn’t tell you how much you’ve helped me. I completed my first triathlon last weekend and the information I got from your videos and website has helped immensely! Thank you!

Fair play Heather, that can’t have been easy. It’s so difficult to keep the same discipline over a number of weeks training. Thanks for the vid👍
Heather, be kinder to yourself! You are amazing to do this!! I loved this episode!
That looked brutal!! Great effort Heather!
...I honestly cant get enough of these , I wonder if I'm addicted
A fabulous effort and another great video from Heather!

You are truly blessed with your surroundings. Beautiful.
Well done btw. That’s a lot!
Woooow. I can't even wrap my brain around a 5000 meter swim. I'd fall asleep standing up after that alone.
If you've done at least a 2KM swim you'd know it's very doable.
Ooooo I love that visor!
Heather, where do you keep the Olympic medal? You have a big display in your living room, or is it in your sock drawer 🙂?
The best "excuses for your coach" video in the history!!!! Keep the laziness
Thanks guys

A 5km swim for these athletes can be done within an hour or so. Exercising for 2-3 hours is pretty normal for them.
I used to do those distances just for my main training … dang.

greeat work
nicely done!

The biggest surprise for me is the amount of time she spends in the pool. I was expecting 2 - 3 5k+ swims, but she's doing 5 of them.
You're smart Heather on your first day of training. Going long when you're not rested and fueled just increases cortisol, not strength or endurance.
Hey guys! Awesome video, I took notes! But what do I do if I don't have access to a swimming pool / swim area? Once again, thank you!

Getting to ride 5 hours a day a week sounds like the dream. If only I didn’t have a day job.
Walmsley went 2:10 in the trials and Kipchoge won gold with 2:08.

Lionel is focusing on improving his swim, hence swimming more than he usually would

This can't be the uk, thought it would rain there every day😂
This is base/ build or peak phase?….or transition?😅
Well she's actually an Olympian 😂 and a silver medallist at that
What was total volume and the breakdown for each sport?
GTN: we want you to do a video about training full time
Also GTN: but still do your regular full time job.
🤦♂️ Seems like if you are going to make a video about training like an Olympian for a week you should actually do the workouts they are doing. Try again.
Seems like a TON of swimming. Is there really any benefit to 3k+ swim when training for 1.5k?
Yeah... You usually double the distance of the race you are doing in training for any sport.
Doing more than necessary gives you the confidence and engines necessary to rock the event. Swimming lanes doesn't usually equate to the uncontrolled factors on race day: you might find yourself swimming way farther due to currents, lines taken, sighting, surrounding athletes, etc...
Swimming is one of the few sport that require extra time. In her case it's mostly likely because she doesn't want to risk getting injured running
If you suck at swimming a ton.
where is spivey
Unlucky olympics for Summer. Just needs to improve that cycle with experience
She should have done it by training time not by mileage.
:D
This video made me angry. You didn’t actually train like a triathlete for Tokyo as you are training for an ultra. You didn’t even do the first day, or the second!
