Hey uncle Stef. Great video as usual. Jobs are coming back! I'm getting a lot of offers since a few weeks ago. Good luck to everybody out there looking for a job!
@@ent.8979 I've worked with a lot of stuff over the years since I started working professionally in 2013. Nowadays it's mostly Java, Postgresql, Vue.js and Google Cloud Platform.
1. Replace native workers with offshore 2. Offshore workers do the needful and obliterate the existing codebase 3. Hire native workers to fix the destroyed codebase 4. Repeat
Stefan, I agree that there is a huge amount of "bad" code out there (I've been an Electrical Engineer and Engineering Manager working in large corporations for the last 45+ years, as well as an as-needed software developer). Heck, some companies are still using FORTRAN, which I haven't used since engineering school in the '70's. But I also know that trying to get a company to spend huge amounts to "fix our code" is often an impossible task, especially since coming up with a powerful benefit to cost analyis for something like that can be extremely difficult. And that assumes you have someone in management who is even knowledgeable enough to know the code needs fixing and is willing to take on the task when they're focused on other goals. My prediction for the future is that there will be an increased demand for higher level designers and problem solvers who can bring multiple tools together to design complex things and fix the mistakes of AI, as well as fix the mistakes of clueless copy/pasters who call themselves software developers. Software languages will be less and less relevant as AI makes things more abstracted. The problem is that as things get more and more abstracted, fewer people understand (or care to understand) what's going on under the hood, and therefore fewer people are available when a company's operations shut down because of a software bug or bad actor.
honestly , If IT is supposed to be this stressful and unsafe , I must say , it does not worth it . Its just getting too much! everytime I feel good while coding and learning , some video "CODE IS DEAD" , "AI WILL EAT YOUR AZZ" , "AI IS YO FATHER" pops up on youtube.
The good old days ended. Now we are in a completely different reality where only the top 1-5% of developers will thrive while most those "average" folks will fight for survival. Not to mention that the job ecosystem is extremely oversaturated. And number of jobs created every year Vs number of new graduates doesn't add up. Each and every year we have more and more people coming into this saturated field looking for jobs but there are less and less of those. I disagree with everything that is said in the video. There is a crisis in the market. Tech job market doesn't grow. Only the tech market and dividends do
@@musashi542All industries are unstable, no one guarantees you work thats right. BUT, doing it while having a high level of demand ( development it is, that is undeniable)
Thats one half of the equation, there are no budgets, budgets slasing and freezes. So the apartment people will have to use this setup whether they like it or not
I have to completely agree with your statements Stef, at least here in Montreal (I'm in Westmount). I believe the demand for developer jobs will continue, at least for the next few years. I'm seeing more and more companies putting new money into development to replace legacy code / apps, etc. Since we're both in Montreal, hit me up if you ever want to meet up downtown for a coffee or whatnot.
That "hierarchy" of uses may change, however. A NEW user should have different options at first, perhaps, until familiarity is there. This can be tricky, as you want to guide a new user, NOT put impediments to a more advanced user, AND not suddenly obscure something that was previously more necessary - making it hard to find later.
The jobs won't come back in significant numbers until Congress fixes Section 174 of the Internal Revenue Code. It is Section 174 that drove the mass layoffs.
@sanjaycse9608 it is a US law. Before tha law, if you had income as a company 100k and you payed an employee 80k, you were taxed for 20k. By that law, you are taxed for 80k, which means only the 20% of the salary you pay is tax deductible. The democrats just wanted to destroy the country.
@@sanjaycse9608 The IRS has a publication that explains the changes to Section 174. If you have even a basic knowledge of accounting, then you'll understand the impact this has on business. The company ends up owing taxes on fictional profits, and smaller companies will not have the cash or the available line of credit to borrow the money to pay the IRS.
Entry level jobs require 100 skills now, it is a mess, web dev jobs, forget it, on top of everything AI tools, anybody can give prompts and pull code, it is a dead end Better to focus on something in the AI space, content creation, game development, video editing, design etc
Are you still training in martial arts uncle Stef? You look ready for training. Merry Christmas uncle Stef and all the best for the new year 🎇 God bless
Ai tools can get away with very simple apps but as the app becomes more complex, there will always be a bug that it cannot fix, so a human dev is always needed. Hence, a non tech prompt engineer will never work.
Hopefully we won't get to the point where AI will be so good that we will clean up and fix its own code as a result our jobs will be gone instead. Currently yes - quality of code created by AI wouldn't pass code review
@@HCforLife1 -> AI is fed with content from the internet -> Internet content is 90% garbage (Sturgeon's Law) -> People use AI to create more content -> AI feeds itself with garbage
@HCforLife1 Right now, it very much feels like devs are starting to define patterns that AI will follow. With quality instructions, the AI can get very close results, and that is where I believe our futures as dev will be.
Stef, do you still think more jobs are going to be created in the coming years, even after the news of o3 by OpenAI, that many people already label as AGI?
I find with these solo gigs you have to be pretty awesome dev though? I mean.. defo not a junior. In a firm if you mess up ... if you delete the wrong file (as my manager once did and couldnt recover easily) .. or if you edit the database incorrectly.. or edit the wrong one (as I have done) then you have hopefully the office batman dev who can swoop in and save the day.. as a lone ranger .. I would imagine you have to be very very good? How would you ensure you dont do perm damage and the client has backups and rollbacks and etc?
I have two bachelors unrelated to software development and am going to finish up an associate's in coding this spring, do you think I have a chance to get my first coding job this summer based on this limited info? nothing really specific was gone over in the associates except basic IT stuff, C#, html/css, java, and python. so no algorithms or anything like that.
If you dont have strong fullstack and/or ML projects and solid grasp of the leetcode blind 75, it’s gonna be very very difficult. Luckily, these are things you can learn without further education (DSA does help a lot for leetcode/interviews tho). But ngl this market is looking pretty grim right now, but things could turn around.
Have you set up a portfolio website yet? Try a couple of stagiere (free) website builds for small local businesses to put on your portfolio. Ability to implement is more important than qualifications as far as webdev goes. (These are Stef's own hints fro previous videos and his course).
Being real you will need probably lot of lack and 1-3 years to get your first job in tech. The market is dead at the moment. I hope I am wrong but what I see in various job markets only confirms my predictions.
WTF. It still is. Have you created apps on your own using AI? There is still a lot to do and think about. Your statement is false, it is still false TODAY and in the future it will continue to be false, although perhaps the work will be in other areas and less in the traditional front-back positions and work will change a lot, yes, in summary the future is Uncertain
@DS-kr3lm software developer falls into traditional space, I never mentioned anything about other areas, majority of jobs are in web/full stack software development space and they will diminish because of rapid AI growth, Truth is always bitter, future is uncertain, you said this, not me, so I rest my case there
