    Instead of building a couple of tall cheap apartment blocks and setting up a help center for homeless to get back on track or to deal with addiction, they do this crap. Incredible. "Die further away" Is literally most cities in the US's plan for dealing with homelessness. Rather than addressing systemic issues, cities try to drive homeless away to be someone else's problem. And since cities are effectively strategic players, most cities act this way to avoid the externality of homeless migrating to their own.

    • @romxxii
      @romxxii 2 роки тому +24

      It's not just a US problem. Here in my country the local slum areas would occasionally erupt in flames as the local government try to drive the poor out. They usually do it when the actual owners of the land -- rich people -- wanna build a mall or condo over it. Cities promise the stars to people from rural areas, and then chew and spit them out for not having been born with enough money to rent a tiny studio apartment.

    A few months ago I read book called "caliban and the witch", and it talked about how people in Europe used to just build their houses anywhere, hunt and fish and basically obtain everything needed for their existence in communal lands. But then private property of land became a thing, and the new "owners" of the land would tear down and burn the houses of the people living there if they didn't pay or work for the lords to obtain the right to exist as a human being in that space. But there was a huge resistance at first, because it was new and people weren't used to that arrangement, so they saw it for what it really is: the "owners" of the land are enslaving you, just with this new justification that it is not you what they own, but the land you exist in. It all sounds so barbaric and it happened like 1500 years ago, but you look at this and you're reminded that we live in exactly the same regimen.

    The mentalities toward unhoused people in LA are truly some of the nastiest I've ever seen. I follow a lot of for-and-by unhoused people and their neighbours organisations there, and it's truly disgusting how the rich talk about them. Like, there's shitty classism everywhere, but I've always been poor and I've lived in Detroit my entire life and the income disparity is largely outside the city vs inside the city (w the exception of Downtown), whereas LA is a huge gap between extremely wealthy people and unhoused or otherwise extremely impoverished people, with like, seemingly no middle class, and there really is this horrific, sadistic, emotionless, inhuman view of unhoused and impoverished people, I've heard people say such disgusting things without blinking, the LAPD was caught on recording joking about bombing an encampment, and it's only going to get worse with the Olympics displacements amping up, the LAPD is intentionally destroying safer shelters that organisations are building, the local government has been intentionally removing access from public restrooms and creating intentionally unsafe warming and cooling centers for the unhoused throughout the pandemic, there's "special enforcement zones" around shelters where unhoused people are additionally terrorised to make the city look better, etc, and generally speaking so many of the people who live there just support it. Unhoused people are treated worse than feral animals, like, so many people in LA genuinely view these real, living human beings, these families and struggling individuals dealing with a really shitty situation in the best way they possibly can, like pests, and it's something I've never seen before, from police and government and people in rich neighbourhoods yeah but not from peoples' direct neighbours, the mentality among much of rich LA residents is genuinely that these people should just die and stop being "in the way," with no actual regard for what's going on or basic human decency.
    I just can't express how viscerally, horrifyingly sad it is that capitalism has made us more worried about someone "illegally" acquiring electricity and water and housing, than someone having to illegally acquire electricity and water and housing.

      Some people coming from countries that haven't experienced communism have romantic image of it. Coming from post communist country I can say communism is not a good thing! Trust me, don't fall for "we are all equal" slogans and such, it's a utopian trap. Communism wants to organize your life for your own money. THEY know what's best for you. I don't wish you to go what we went through, dark times when only thing you could buy in store for sure was vinegar. When you somehow got a pack o toilet paper you would walk home with it proudly like a peacock, so everybody could see what luxuries you have. Real times of absurdity, I tell you that. If you want to see communist reality (in a crooked mirror, but still very true) watch movie "Mis" by Stanislaw Bareja, best comedy ever, although I don't know how much of it you would actually get. When my dad went on vacation to Cuba he said he got a whiff of his old times, not in a good sense. Also his wife spent all day looking for pads or tampons, I guess it's a luxury...

    It’s honesty disgusting to see how people view this issue. Using excuses like “homeless people want to be homeless” (which is just flat out wrong and the worst of the propaganda) or worse “they will never work a real job anyway” Like how tf are you supposed to have a job if you don’t even have an alarm clock can’t clean yourself and you have no idea if you’ll be able to sleep in the same place every day. People also like to say that “homelessness only exists in California” while in other states the homeless population is less visible only because those who become homeless eventually die or end up in the US prison system. If we gave these people free housing running water and food they would have a greater chance of becoming self sustaining. Not only that it would remove the need for homeless encampments at all, so snobby assholes don’t have to cry about “having to see people suffering in muh neighborhood” It’s astounding how little compassion the average person has towards those who are literally struggling to survive. Like can you imagine having to live on the sidewalk, having to beg for money from others, being helplessly addicted to a drug that may or may not ease the pain and knowing there is no chance at getting help? Not only that, having to live in fear that one day, the police will raid the place you live, take all of your belongings, and throw you in jail where withdrawals from the drug you depend on might literally end your life.

    I can not believe how heartless people are, I'm rewatching all you're stuff and came across this, i remember watching this the day yall released it, and a few weeks later i had some bullshit go down. love the channel tho guys, glad you're working on it since i cant get enough of i did a thing
    Storytime:
    I worked for a pizza company as a delivery driver, our location was attached to a grocery store that had huge homeless village living in the parking lot. well, one guy was laying in front of our store for about and hour or so. And after two customers complained about him being there, my manager asked me if i could go wake him up and ask him to move, i really didnt want to make him move cause he wasn't doing anything. So i go out give him a nudge and felt that he was ice cold. Which startled me, so i went to check his pulse, and well, he was dead. I go back in to notify her the the man was dead, and i was going to call 911 to well. deal with him, but my manager, upon me telling her he was dead, in the most karen bullshit voice, "god why couldn't that loser fucking die somewhere else". Which totally caught me off guard cause she was genuinely a good boss and seemed to be a decent person, unless you're homeless then to her you're no longer a human. i ask if shes being serious since that's a human being right there."hardly a person, one less loser coming in here asking for free shit". I had never seen the guy before and i knew most of the homeless crowd since id give cigarettes to anyone that asked. I lost my shit right as the other closing drive came in. he is like wtf is going one so i explain. he looks at the homeless guy and back over to her "fuck you bitch i quit" and i thought that was a great idea, so i also let her know i was fucking done here as well and she can shove the 2 week notice right up her ass "well you guys need to finish out your shifts, there's no way i can do all these dishes by myself, since our cook has to leave in 15 minutes as well". our cook was a 15 year old girl, her first job and it was nearly the time where she was legally no longer allowed to work. so she chimed in she was done as well which i gave her mad props for. so all three of us leave and stand out front waiting for paramedics to arrive. my manager comes back out demanding we get back in there. i tell her hey you're right i should get back in there, walk back inside and clocked out. this sent her up the fucking wall. and to this day brings a smile to my face. a few days later i got a call from none other than the owner of our store, explaining that he knew what went down(our store had audio and video recording stuff throughout the store), he had terminated her and was wondering if i would like come back, no repercussions for walking out on my shift. i thanked him for doing the right thing and firing that lady but i was no longer interested. he wished me best of luck and hung up. Fuck some people, but having zero respect for someone who died cold and alone in front of a pizza place is beyond sick to me.

Homeless people actually LOVE being on fire. This one time when I was staying in the YMCA, I was asleep in my bed one morning when someone decided to spray some kind of propellant all over my sheets and set them on fire with me wrapped up in them. Boy oh boy was it fun! It was so exciting I was still shaking half an hour later! What a blast! You joked about them clearing homeless encampments with a bulldozer, but that is basically standard practice. I live near a canal between a lake and the sea, and in order to get some privacy homeless people regularly set up in the tree line by the canal. Then one day fliers were posted saying basically "There will be a raid tomorrow" and sure enough, the next day city cleanup workers and cops showed up. They arrested everyone who didn't want to leave, took everything, threw away most of it, and a bunch of tents ended up going into the canal.

    As a homeless person in the US, I really appreciate the criticism you guys have for the way the news represents homeless folks. I tend to live alone, as there ARE a lot of shady people in the homeless community, but I also believe that a lot of the unpleasant behaviors of these people largely stem from them not having enough social support to actually take care of themselves.
    I am not entirely unhappy with my living situation, as I'm a nature lover and live in the woods with two roosters that act as service animals to me, alerting to panic attacks, intruders of both human and animal varieties, and general emotional support. My campsite has often been complimented for being clean and well-kept, but I do not have electricity (outside of the portable batteries I use to keep my phone charged), running water, a bed, or really much of anything. Most of my "luxuries" go towards keeping my boys happy and entertained, thigh I am not against decorating my area with cheap outdoor decor. I feel that if this is where I spend the majority of my time, it ought to feel nice to live in.
    EDIT: I do believe there is a problem when homeless people "take over" a sidewalk, but that's more in terms of when homeless people become actively aggressive towards pedestrians trying to use a sidewalk. I think our communities need to be more tolerant of homeless presence, but that doesn't mean tolerance to public displays of violence, drug use, or the like. I'm lucky as the area I live in (Olympia, WA) has some pretty extensive homeless outreach programs including soup kitchens, food, clothing, and hygiene banks, mental and physical health programs, and much more, but it's still not enough to eradicate homelessness. I think when homeless folk are keeping peace and coexisting with the community, they should be left well enough alone. However, cities prioritize shuffling homeless folk around due to annexing laws that say that if a person can prove that they've lived uncontested in the same spot for 7-12 years, they become eligible to legally claim the land they've settled on. Here in Washington, that's 7 years, and in Thurston County cities organize to switch which cities are anti-homeless and which ones are "welcoming" to homeless folk every five years, so that homeless people "still have a place to go", but they're unable to stay settled in any one area for long. I, myself, have been "moved along" several times in my decade+ on the streets for no other reason than that the cities have shuffled where is safe to camp. I don't do drugs, I don't steal, I don't start fights, I don't panhandle- I just want to live peacefully with my roosters, and often end up making positive connections with my housed neighbors.
    PS- I don't have a slide.
