I watched this when I got a cutting two months ago and it’s been in water ever since. It now has several roots and I think it will be ready for soil next week! Thank you!
I didn't know you could do this! thank you so much for the info. I bought 6 snake plants from the hard ware store, now with your technique I can propagate and grow more. By the end of the year I should have more snake plants and cleaner air inside my home.
One of the best and insightful videos on Snake plant! Thanks so much! You were crisp to the point and shared everything that a beginner should know about snake plant.
I grew another plant from my snake plant. I didn't know at the time that I could. Part of a leaf got broken off and instead of throwing it away, I stuck in in the dirt. When I checked it, it had grew roots and was doing great. It now has four pups and looks amazing. Now I have got two long leafs and am going to plant them too. I am excited about how they will turn out.
I agree, soothing voice and so easy. I was successful, and after waiting a few months from water, have roots and now ready to plant in cactus potting mix ☀️🌿 thank you
Hi, Give it a Grow !!! I love your video. I finally understand why they call it a snake plant.Thank you. My plants keep rotting. I think I might not let them callus over long enough. I'm gonna try to get them to root again. Thank you for sharing a great video. Enjoy your week and take care. Hugs and blessings too.
I enjoy these kind of videos! I water propagated my snake plant like this months ago and after it developed a good amount of roots I potted them in soil, ever since then they haven’t produced a baby plant😒. Do some just grow roots and no plant? Thanks! 🌱
The cuttings with baby plants will take months for the sprouts to reach the sun, and new sprouts take a long time to form, so just give them plenty of light and that should help speed things up.
The new plant shoots will come in their own time. The problem you will find with rooted cuttings of variegated sansevieria is the variegation will almost always be lost on the new shoots.
One thing that people should be aware of is, leaf cuttings only produce the all-green natural leaf form, no matter what the color of the mother plant. If you have a plant like laurentii (with the gold margins) or moonshine (the frosty blue-green one), the only way to maintain that character is with a division.
I have had my snake plants in water for over a year I would like to put them in soil now do I let the roots dry out from being in the water the whole time or just directly put them in soil also ,I have pups connected to them do I separate them and put them directly into the soil
I've had a snake plant for a little over a year and it's been in the dark and neglected most of the time and it's still alive! The leaves aren't very vertical due to it stretching looking for light but I am going to try to water propagate some leaf cuttings. Is the cut part of the plant worth keeping it in the pot? Or just toss it?
If the plant is struggling, I would avoid taking cuttings and just give it lots of sun and flood the soil with water and then let it dry out for a while. Leaf cuttings can be tricky, its alot easier to recover the plant as a whole.
Cool video! Hey, and what happens to the cutting section after it rooted and sent shoots? Does the "new plant" drop it as with other succulents or does it stay there?
Im new to plants, loving what i know. Unfortunately i cant get anything to stay alive!! This guy was very old and huge!! I did this to it. N the roots got soggy and fell apart! Until i get the hang of not killing my poor plants! I just found your videos today! Going to be watching more! Cant post a photo.. its the snake plant. It is dying so fast! Thank you for your advice!
Hello I love your video, I have one n this is the first time I over watered it was 5 leafs but when I looked 2 had turned yellow, so I pulled them off n repoted it but when I did the root ball came off. can it be saved ? So I repoted in fresh soil is that ok ,or should it be in water, n I put rooting hormone on it . 😀🙋🏽👍🏾👌🏾🙌🏾
So from water to the soil we water the soil until its soaked or moist?? Also after that first watering do we let it dry out or keep it moist for a few months and then let it dry out?? Sorry if confusing I need to transplant my snake plant into soil.
Water worked so much better for me! My water propagations took a few days and have more roots than my soil propagation that's been going for two months. However now they're all super wrinkly, especially the soil started one. I've had this happen with other cuttings too do they need more water? Is this a natural part of the process of growing more roots?
I would put them all in water, that seems to do the trick. If they wrinkle, they can still plump back up over time, but if they start to rot it just needs to be trimmed. Make sure to give them lots of sun so they stay strong.
Hi I grew two leaves n after a month n half they have white bunch of roots, and I did it in coco pete. My question is how much time will it take for the pups to appear?? Thank you for ur time.
I have some snake plants with roots already from having grown in soil, is it possible to just place them (with their roots) into a glass with water and have them grow that way? Or would I need to take cuttings and place those into the glass?
I broke off the little pups like this 3:20 and planted seperately bc it was running out of space. Do you think it will survive? I shouldve waited like you suggested but i didnt see your videos lol
I hope they will be ok, if they look like they are struggling, you could try giving them more light and perhaps even setting them in water to root for a bit before planting them in soil again.
Mine is 30 yrs old and bloomed last year it’s in a pot too small I think but idk it also is in low light should I divide and repot it and does it need brighter light ? Or is that just for the babies ?
Brighter light is always good, but is not absolutely necessary. If the plant is happy in the tiny pot, I wouldn't worry about it. You can divide or simply transplant it, but there is a risk the plant may get damaged and droop. Up to you, but I would keep it in the smaller pot and, maybe, break off a pup, or take a few cuttings.
Hi man, do you know how to keep the yellow color after we cut and propagate because ask I know they will loose color after we cut the leaves and try to mutiples them. Thank you!
I did this a couple of weeks ago, but forgot I was supposed to let them dry out first. I put them directly in water. Do you think they might still have a chance?
You can let them dry out again, then after a day add them back in the water if you are still worried. This plant can be tricky, but I always give them a chance, I have had parts of the leaf die before they start to root so dont loose hope!
When can I cut off the ugly original cutting? I've got roots and pups on most of my cuttings, but the cuttings taken from the middle that look like rectangles look so ugly in the pot- at what point can I cut them? How big do the pups have to be? I'd love to see a video on that! Thanks!
My sanseviera whale fins have lots of wrinkles in the centre of the leaf and the leaf felt a bit soft. Can you tell me what is wrong with my plants? I don’t want to loose them. Thanks.
Please help me, mine I've had almost 3 years asks for some reason a few started to lean over almost as if they wanted to run away. Lol... Should I try and cut them at bent part and let them scab over and with any luck ill have a few more? Im just scared that they will die😔 idkw id do if they died on me ice put so much into them. IDKW but all the plants I hear are great house plants and easy to care for I have such a bad time with. The past 3 years I've spent over a thousand dollars on plants and if it wasn't for the few snake plants and catus and my one parlor palm id have nothing to show. Oh my half spider plant I have left. It was a all green on one side and the curly on the other well the all green died and I did everything to try and save it. I will never buy anymore chicken and hens I've lost so much on them alone. I thought I had made it with the snake plants but this yr didn't do to good once I put them out for summer. I didn't just throw them out I did out in a weeks time so they wouldn't get crazy shocked. I swear I feel like everything I used to be awesome at is just hurting my heart now. I get very upset when my plants don't make it rather I buy or propergate. I don't like anything to die😢. Please please help me. Also my curly spider plant was doing great then I guess the weight of it hanging over the pot is pulling out out and im so scared to touch it and repot it so scared of losing it. I paid a good amount of money on accont of the all green which I was told is very very rare. They got me good. That died before the year was up I've had the half side of the curly ands now it was growing looking beautiful until the one side is getting so heavy. It's also got new lil plants coming up I other places that's really why im scared to touch it. Idk please help me thank you so much..
Houseplants, like the snake plant and spider plant, usually like consistency. If you can water them deeply by soaking the soil that will make absolutely sure they have enough to drink, then let the soil dry out for a few weeks before watering again. This will make sure there are no dry spots (witch can happen in older potting soil) or wet spots that stay wet (that can cause rot). Give them plenty of sunlight, as much as you possibly can is a good rule for indoor plants. Keep an eye out for pests and disease too. Once you create a consistent environment for them you should start to have better luck with growing anything! I hope that helps, let me know if you have any more questions.
You said the leaves are drooping over? I'm no expert, but it sounds like you may have overwatered them. I have one snake plant. I rescued it from a store that overwatered it, so they sold it to me cheap because it was damaged. Anyway, i've had it a several months. I couldn't get the leaves to stand back up, so I cut them where they started to lean. The main plant is doing better and has grown. The leaves I cut I propagated in water, and they've sprouted some fantastic roots. I'm about to plant them.
Not sure if anyone will answer me but all my snake plants are getting rot at the bottom after a week in water. I've never had plants rot from propagation before. Should I cut the ends and then start over?
That happens for me too, I just give the main plant more sun and they will produce new pups for you, that is usually a lot faster than leaf cuttings anyway.
i always do mine in water, they root quick in water, plain water, and after doing this, you ONLY put the plant where the bottom of the leaf is covered, you do NOT put much of the leaf in water at all, just the very tip end, owther wise the leaf will ROT,
The mush is rot, rinse off the dead parts and try again (you can still save the rest of the leaf). You may want to use gravel to allow the leaf to breathe.
Even if I cared nothing for houseplants I would watch this for the positivity you exude.

I love your videos for the same reason 😊🌱
Thank you for this video! It’s the only one I’ve found that properly walks us through transferring from water to soil.

Thanks!
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I think I really like this plant. It's hard to kill and does well in or out of the house.
I hope you picked up some tips. These can be tricky to propagate, but I have had good luck with the cuttings in water.
Your voice is so soothing ! I'm glad I bumped on your video :)

Very beautiful plants 🤗🤗🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿

Give it a Grow Sure. I was so excited when I got a leaf of ‘Moonshine’ and then it gave me a normal dark green plant. 😅
Rooting: When the tops and bottoms are cut square, does the top eventually grow pointed or does it remain flat/square?
Stays flat, and send new growth up from the roots.
I cut mine into a point 🐍🐍🌵🌵🌴🐵
Thank you, five out of my eight cuttings just started to root 😊
That's pretty good!
How much time did they take
Thanks for all the info, great video.

@@GiveitaGrow yes I did. Worth watching.
Interesting! Any other Sansevieria species aside from those?
Thanks for sharing your idea 😀

omg never would have guessed you could just chop the leaf in half like that!! i thought I'd have to pull a full one out from the root
This is a sloooooow process, but it does work!

McKenna Liddick stop watering it. They’re drought resistant. Wait until the soil is entirely dry then wait another week.
Yes, try to let it dry out, and make sure it gets good light. I hope you plant looks better soon :) thanks for watching!

Mine broke away from the root once, I found water to be a huge help to get new roots started.
What when they start cracking?
Do I need to change the water
Excellent video. When we plant the new leaves into soils; how often should we water them? Should we keep them soaked?
I would let them dry out between waterings.
My snake plant has been thriving in water for almost two months now. and it is on my dining table. am using purified water.
Cool! How are the root looking? The new roots are usually white, if you see those then they are really doing great!
Give it a Grow yes the roots are white. i put little white stones on the container. and it look so pretty really.
Would you recommend using rooting hormone? If so, would you use it before the cut callouses over?
I never use it, but yeah that will probably help.
So from water to the soil we water the soil until its soaked or moist?? Also after that first watering do we let it dry out or keep it moist for a few months and then let it dry out?? Sorry if confusing I need to transplant my snake plant into soil.
Once in soil, I water them like a normal succulent, letting them dry out completely between waterings.

is it good to place them next to a sunny window (the cuttings in water)
I think so, yes, the more sun the better in my opinion.
Do we need to let them callous before soaking or would it work directly from cutting to water?
Good question. I usually dont, but that could be a good idea.
Hi man, do you know how to keep the yellow color after we cut and propagate because ask I know they will loose color after we cut the leaves and try to mutiples them. Thank you!
Someone told me that only pups that grow from the main plant will have the striped colors. Give them lots of sun and they should grow new pups faster.
Give it a Grow thanks, it was really helpful 👍🏻
But do the propagated plants all have blunt tips forever?
They will send out a new pup from the roots and the old leaf can eventually be removed.
What kind of water did you used for propaget snake plant?
h2o specifically
Tap water is fine, you can leave it out for a day to de-chlorinate if you want.
Should we change the water often or let it go with same water
Change it if it gets gross, but I usually just top it with fresh water when it gets low.
Very helpful info, thank you.
Thanks. Good luck!
What kind of light should you have the cuttings in?
The more ambient light the better, so close to a bright window. Direct sun is good, but too much direct sun can stress them out.
How many days to comes root in this leaves ??
Around 30 or more days for me, it can take a long time and some leaves will likely rot.
all the stars
Why did mine go soggy in water and in soil mix? It’s like the entire leaf was see through.
That happens to me too, I just remove the rot and start fresh. Even half gone leaves can sprout roots so save em if you can.
Give it a Grow I cut the the rotted part inlet it heal for 2 days. We will see if it works.
Thank you for sharing 😁👍
👍 Your welcome!
@@GiveitaGrow Thank you for your help! I will try that.
Hi there, What time of the year is the best time to take the cuttings...Thank you
Summer, I have been told.
I didn't let my cuttings callous! I put them straight into the water, should I take them out? 😬 great video BTW! Should have looked it up before hand.
You can remove them from the water for a few days if you are worried about them.
Thanks for sharing!
Seems like my cuttings in water wont grow roots its been 4 weeks
As long as they are not rotting, they still have a chance to set down roots, so keep at it! btw, I just did an update on snake plant leaf cuttings
When can I cut off the ugly original cutting? I've got roots and pups on most of my cuttings, but the cuttings taken from the middle that look like rectangles look so ugly in the pot- at what point can I cut them? How big do the pups have to be? I'd love to see a video on that! Thanks!
I would make sure you are getting new growth on the pups before cutting back the old leaf.
I put my cuttings in water right away because I didn’t know about callusing. Will they still root? :(
You can take them out any any point to re-callus.
When you first plant it how often should you water it?
From what i know until the bottom part is dry, over water them is easier to kill them than have them without water.
My sanseviera whale fins have lots of wrinkles in the centre of the leaf and the leaf felt a bit soft. Can you tell me what is wrong with my plants? I don’t want to loose them. Thanks.
If the leaf is soft it is in trouble. Try letting the plant dry out more between waterings, and give them more sun if you can.
Give it a Grow Thanks
Can i propagate long leaves withoutcutting one whole leave?

How do you re-plant the babies?
Once the new plant forms you should be able to plant it just peaking out of the soil.
Do the cuttings form new rhizomes ?
Yes, but it takes a long time.
Very informative video
Thanks for watching :)

i only use very little water in mine, just the very ends go into the water, about 1/4 an inch, works much better for me
Cool. I will have to try that. Sounds like they would dry out quickly though.
Oh yes I have to try this !
Good luck!
how often do u change the water?
I usually just keep it topped with fresh water, but you can change it as often as you like.
Hello, Please help me. My snake plant cuttings are not rooting even after 2 to 3 months. Should I need to do anything? This is the second time.
That happens for me too, I just give the main plant more sun and they will produce new pups for you, that is usually a lot faster than leaf cuttings anyway.

How often you change water mine cutting are dieing
You can try letting them dry out for a day or two, and try again with fresh water.
It’s been a little over a month and mine haven’t rooted yet :(
Mine take that long sometimes too, as long as the leaf is still alive it can still grow. try giving it a little dappled sun to promote new growth.
How long it takes to grow roots on cutting?
A few weeks to a month.
Dont i have to change water over a period of 1 month?
Change it, or just keep re-filling it.
Hello so is it safe to it will about a year for it to grow a new shoot. Because mine did.
Mine took a few months to form shoot, many of leaves died too, but if the leaf is still green you should be good no matter how long it takes.
Good morning my dear old friend Sansevieria (trifasciata), how are you ? I see ... be happy 💚!
i always do mine in water, they root quick in water, plain water, and after doing this, you ONLY put the plant where the bottom of the leaf is covered, you do NOT put much of the leaf in water at all, just the very tip end, owther wise the leaf will ROT,

How many days will take for rooting?
Anywhere from a week to a month usually.
You mentioned that some of the cuttings rotted... Was that like a fungus type thing? because my cuttings in water, got slimy and smelled horrible!
Did you do new water every few days
It’s been three weeks in water and the bottom is so mushy... how on earth is it going to root through mush?
The mush is rot, rinse off the dead parts and try again (you can still save the rest of the leaf). You may want to use gravel to allow the leaf to breathe.
Can snake plants survive in winter time outdoors? I live in zone 8.
I am in zone 4 so I dont know for sure, but I would think they will be fine as long as it dosnt get too cold.
Thanks.
does the upright phenomenon apply to ALL plants?
For the most part yes, they need to be kept right side up.
Thanks!
How much time did it take for the roots to show up?
Months, though I started these in winter, they may do better in summer.
Give it a Grow ....I'd imagine, cuttings in water grow roots faster but how much faster? What's the time frame on each?
Nice video! Thank you! 😉
Do you have them indoors all year round??
Yes, I have some in a sunny window for fast growth, and a few others around the house.
If the top is cut doesn't that mean that the pant wouldn't grow tall?
Yes. The leaf will grow a new plant from the root area.
can it be let all grown in water all the time???
Sure, just give them plenty of sunlight.
hmm.....thanks
Is there any way to reduce rot likelihood?
Some people have had better luck taking cutting in summer.
I put my plant in water and it got mushy and I put one in dirt and it got mushy what did I do wrong
That happens, I usually just try again. You could try to let them dry out if they start to rot.
