    It's a shame that the player isn't identified. His technique is flawlessly professional (unlike most of what you'll find posted online). Note how he uses gravity as the principal force for the crash, simply dropping his forearms and knees.

    I never realized how rich the harmonics in cymbals were until I dropped the metal lid of a pot and noticed the sound. I then spent an hour banging various sizes and shapes of pot lids together while doing a Fast Fourier Transform on the sound.
    Since all sounds are just combinations of sine waves of different frequencies, a fast fourier transform will analyze a sound and give a graph that shows the amplitude of every frequency in the sound. So it's great for being able to visualize harmonics or how frequencies change with pitch for people who are new to music theory and accoustics. There are lots of different free software that can do Fast Fourier Transforms. Look around if you're interested. They can be invaluable tools as well as fun toys.
    EDIT: Audacity is the tool I use on my computer for Fast Fourier Transforms. It's a free audio editing tool.

    Zildjian - rock 'n roll sound. Sabian - jazz sound. Meinl - orchestral. My ear digs those Meinls...a little thin, though.

      Brass cymbals?? I heard only that brass is used only for beginner cymbals. Best cymbals sound with bronze (B8, B12 or B20).

      @@xanderwebb7998 Meinl is a German company, yes, but the Symphonic series and the Byzance series are made in Turkey. The MB20 series was also made in Turkey, but they've since discontinued that line. Only the HCS, Classics Custom, and Pure Alloy series' are made in Germany.

      @@xanderwebb7998 i forgot to add. Meinl decided about 20 years ago they wanted to put out a higher quality "Turkish-like" cymbal (as they knew Turkey makes the best cymbals), so they sought out a well established cymbalsmith in Turkey, Murat Diril, to make cymbals for them. Murat Diril created the Byzance, Symphonic, and MB20 series' for them, as well as the Twenty Series for Paiste. Their contract with him has since ended, and now the Byzance and Symphonic cymbals are made by Amisos Cymbals (Turkish cymbal factory owned by Meinl).

      @@jareddoran6605 wow okay i didn’t know all of that actually. i was under the impression that meinl was entirely german based like sonor and didn’t have ties to turkey. turkish made cymbals are definitely the best and that revelation has brought me to bosphorus cymbals as my new love. thanks for the info!

    • @markpichler9070
      @markpichler9070 9 місяців тому

      @@jareddoran6605 Well, it's all true. But I must raise an objection to "Turkish made cymbals are by far the best". To get a better comparison in this video, the Meinl Byzance series should have been pitted against Zildjian K's (or K-Custom) or Sabian HH (or HHX) and not Zildjian's A or Sabian's AA. This would be closer to the sound of Byzance. Incidentally, the K's (even if they are now completely computerised) and HHs are made in the same way as in the old Turkish style (B20 alloy and hand-hammered). So Armenian (or now American) and Canadian manufacturers are also capable of producing equally good cymbals. But let's not forget Paiste - apart from all the B8 cymbals they became famous for - they make damn good cymbals. But Paiste stands out because they use many different alloys, while Zildjian and Sabian use a lot of B20 and very rarely B8. Then there are a number of Turkish companies that have certainly established themselves on the market (Istanbul, Mehmet, the Diril brothers and Cousins). However, if we look at the Turkish cymbal market in general, it has to be said that you can get anything from fantastic cymbals to rubbish because there is no regular quality control, unlike with large companies such as Zildjian, Sabian, Paiste or Meinl.

      @@markpichler9070 salvo qualche ufip, ma zildjian proprio una latta. attenzione a quando il suono dei piatti è abbellito dalla compresenza della cassa. dove sono i tosco di mio zio??? zildjian viennesi vanno bene per tutte le stagioni, copresa operetta, basta esserne convinti. insomma un piatto che faccia gioooom anziché cin è una chimera. i K ottocenteschi dei wiener erano buoni ma solo nelle mani del compianto zamazal, morto lui i professoroni non ne ricavavano un granche perciò passaro ai sabian. ottimi invece quelli arena verona 1990 (zorba, la parte in 7/8). oggi , quando il lento del don carlo alla scala diventa allegro (ove son? quei doppier presso a finir...), credimi il timbro dei piatti è l'ultimo dei problemi, mica come kleiber che impiegò un mese per trovare la campana del fledermaus che suonasse con poco argento come la campana della chiesetta croata. hehehe

    I recently played the Zildjian Viennese 20" and personally I thought they sounded a lil ridged at pp - mf but at ff and fff they opened up to a almighty wash of colour. The Meinl ones (18") sound great at lower dynamics but they are a lil too splashy at ff and fff. Paiste (18")are great all round dynamically but lack the wash. So as a rule....match the cymbal to the music!

    Is the knee knock really necessary? There must be very little vibration by the time you actually play the cymbals. Seems like one of those learnt habits which has no benefit, but happy to be told otherwise.

      When you play the cymbal before, it was cool-down along time. If you just play the cymbal without the knee knock it can’t be very good (sound). If you have the knee knock it can be very well because it have the. We should have a Vibration to ready. ❤ I hope it can help you.❤😊
