@@johncampbell756 yeah love this era of the dead! (love just about every era of the dead) I think the Movie “Festival Express” would be a great review. Who can go wrong with a train full of great musicians cruising Canada in 1970 roaring down the tracks on psychedelics?
So good to see someone do a reaction to a Pigpen song. He was the Dead's blues man and a founding member of the group going back to their jug band days up until 1972 when he became too ill to tour with the band and passed away in early 1973. Like everything Grateful Dead, he brought with him a wide spectrum of talent and style. I wanted to suggest another Pigpen song that might give you a deeper understanding of his contributions and the reason he was loved by so many. I couldn't decide between these two songs. The first is "Easy Wind" from an 8/30/70 PBS special. This is a song Pigpen wrote where he sings and plays harmonica. There is a blistering solo by Garcia with a drum beat that is almost tribal in nature. The second is Turn on Your Lovelight (Live at Fillmore East, New York City, April 1971), This is a good example of one of Pigpen's Raps that he was famous for. I chose this one because it has some audience participation you may find amusing. I hope you see this and get around to checking out one of these iconic versions. Thanks for keeping good music alive.
Jamel a little backstory to this show . The Grateful Dead Janis Joplin,The Band,Buddy Guy, and other acts decided to hire a train to go across Canada and do shows. Festival Express is the name of the Documentary made very interesting.
Written and originally recorded by Otis Redding 6 months before his death in a December 1967 plane crash. It was released 6 months after his death. The most popular cover was recorded in 1990 by The Black Crowes.
Chris Robinson was and still is a Grateful Dead fan, and hearing Pigpens version of Hard To Handle in 1970 is what inspired the Crows to cover the song 20 years later.
PigPen was one of the founders of the Dead - and brought the blues influence ... also the first of four members on keyboards that met with untimely ends - Pig had Crohn's disease, and died young (in 1972); followed by Keith Godchaux (1971-1979, died in a car accident), Brent Mydland (1979-1990, died of drug overdose) and Vince Welnick (1990-1995, suicide after Jerry's death) ... Tom Constanten (played keys from 1968-1970, helping to fill in for Pig) ...
Pig died in 1973. It's too bad Constanten didn't stick around after Pigpen....my understanding he was pretty straight, plus we wouldn't have gotten the Godchaux package deal (ie-Donna.....i felt she added nothing to the band, except for a coupla songs).... They were MUCH better without her, as this vid proves.......
@@CorneiliusLibowitz The good/bad Donna debate will go on forever, but regardless of what she added/ruined Keith was a master keyboardist and was an integral member throughout what many fans consider to be their greatest era.
Grateful Dead, the best cover band ever. Hard To Handle is one of the most covered songs ever, by many, many artists. Otis Redding wrote it, and all the artists of the time loved him and were crushed by his passing, but they had his songs. The Festival Express film is a must see, from beginning to end, plus all the extras on the DVD, VERY worthwhile.

Janis Joplin joined the Dead on stage twice. She sang "Turn on Your Love Light" with Pigpen at the Fillmore West on 6-7-69 and the Euphoria Ballroom on 7-16-70.

On that tour people were protesting the price of the ticket which was around 9 bucks, I believe, and that was to see The Band, Janis, The Dead, Buddy Guy and a host of others..
