Nora Douglas Holt is on my list of people I would love to visit, if I could travel back in time. She was a classical composer, a pianist, a blues singer, a radio personality, magazine editor, educator, activist, socialite, jet setter, a muse of the Harlem Renaissance.... She was wild and scandalous. She got married five times - her first husband was a musician, and her fourth was a millionaire. In 1926, divorced for the fifth and last time, she left for an extended stay abroad, seeing the world, singing in nightclubs throughout Europe and Asia. She put her belongings in storage before she left, and when she came back, she discovered that many of her things had been stolen, including her musical compositions, more than 200 of them. This piece survives, because it had already been published in a magazine Nora had founded called Music and Poetry. And here it is: Nora’s Dance - in memory of the free-spirited Nora Holt.
