I give characters similar struggles to mine I created one character based on the fact that excitement and nervous feels like electricity shocks in your nerves This character *actually has* electrical powers and when they get really really exited/really stressed they shock things close in the area Another thing is I’ll build a world based on a concept I like And one concept that seems to pop up for me is duality I have a story based on: Natural,magic,tradition vs Progression,science and technology And the message of that story is pretty much no one side is evil- they are both harmful and good in their own ways @daisysufo to awnser you question I think create a world that you can get attached to first or create an interesting world for your oc and repurpose and mesh to oc to fit how you please Another thing is to give to character friends (or foes) having relationships for your character means you can draw them interacting and stuff I sound like I know what I’m saying but really I daydream too much! I generally don't get attached to a character unless I develop a story for it, and a world for it to exist in. Developing characters for them to interact with, and fleshing out the continuity they exist in, is generally what gives a character life - and what is an OC ? An Original Character. Some people turn them in to a Persona - which is a character that represents some aspect of themselves. Some people turn them in to a Persona Mascot - a character who represents an aspect of themselves and/or their brand, which they use from site to site. I have difficulty with all of this myself. I definitely have more than one OC I am attached to but any new ones just seem to be passing pretty designs. LOVE your designs btw.
i relate to you sm with not being able to have ocs 😭😭😭 i usually just draw fanart for fandoms im in and maybe i'll draw random sketches of designs but i can't really get attached to anything i draw 😭😭 for art fight i literally just took some of my sketches and colored them in for characters but most of my attacks are fully rendered because i like drawing art for other people more than drawing my characters 😭😭
From personal experience, I love all my ocs like my literal children. Most of my ocs are from the same novel/writing project I'm working on. ALL of them have connected relationships and detailed character arcs. Seeing them grow, change, and interact with "people" make them feel alive to me. Their stories and personalities connects to each other like a web. This also makes me not able to have a "sona". Because I treat all my ocs like their own people lmao. Some tips for attaching to ocs someone who isn't mentally insane like me: - Make them interact with each other! Family, friends, coworkers, enemies! When I make a new oc, it usually came from the thought of "What If (old oc) had a friend that acts like (personality trait)?" - Make them relatable to YOU! Have your oc experience, love, hate, things you do. It doesn't have to be the exact same thing as you. What if you acted differently in that situation? What if you had different people around you at that time? What if you had a different childhood? They will become a totally different person, yet still relatable to you. - Make characters from fandoms you enjoy! Like your genshin oc, making ocs in pre-existing universes you love could make you motivated to develop them. - Collab with friends! If your friends are willing, making your ocs the in their universe is always fun. I'm more of a 70% writer 30% artist, maybe that changes things? (I also come up with visual design AFTER lore/personality) It's interesting to see people who have total opposite problems than me haha. Hope something helped :P
Personally Speaking, i Have issues with cpnnecting with my characters as well. my tip is to bring aspects of yourself into their design or lore. i didnt like my protag until i really understood his motives and struggles and related them to my own. i also changed and refurbished other designs to more closely resemble struggles i have had or have, it makes it easier for me to really care about them like that.

I'm gonna attack you so hard but more on your question of how to care for OCS its mostly about actually making your Oc if you just make a cool design, you're gonna think "thats a cool design!" and that's gonna be as far as you go with how you like an Oc but if you create a backstory, a personality, if you make these characters interact with others etc. Then by default you're gonna be more attached. I was never attached to my ocs back when I first started making them because they didn't have any personalities or backstories. they were all kinda just self inserts or basic stereotypes with little to no background or chemistry with any of my other characters, but you'll see as you intertwine them and create their story that you will grow more attached and actually enjoy drawing them to further a plot or make a fun comic or side story. TL;DR: give Ur ocs personalities that are fun to explore as well as backgrounds and cool or fun lore and you are more likely to be attached
