My favorite all time musical. And the stage version is even better. :) Jon Larson wrote this based on experiences living in NYC in the 80's when AIDS was a huge headline and there was so much fear of losing ppl he loved. And he did lose several to AIDS. Glad you watched it.
He actually died of AIDS before the show made it to Broadway, I believe. I know for sure that his sister accepted his Tony Award posthumously because his mother couldn't bring herself to make the acceptance speech.
@@AnxietyRat I had always assumed that his death at such a young age was AIDS related, based on the subject matter of Rent. He died of an aortic dissection if we're being picky.
Rent was a remake of an old opera "La Boheme" about poor people living the bohemian lifestyle in Paris in 1830, featuring characters named Rodolfo, Mimi, Marcello, a philosopher named Colline, a musician named Schaunard, and their landlord, Benoit, many of whom have TB (tuberculosis). "Rent" is about poor people living in New York in 1989-90, featuring characters named Roger, Mimi, Mark, a philosopher named Collins, a musician named Angel Dumont Schunard, and their landlord, Benny, many of whom have AIDS. I got to see "Rent" in Denver, the off-broadway tour, in the late 1999-2000. It was AMAZING to see live but no one really knew what to make of it. It didn't really fit a niche, but it was the musical that inspired Lin-Manuel Miranda to write In the Heights so...
IIRC Jesse L Martin (Collins) worked with Jon in the moondance diner. He's my fave but I love Adam and Anthony's voices together (Mark and Roger). The people in the support group meeting are named after Jon's real friends.
Love that you checked this out! Ones of my favorite musicals, ever! Saw it 3 times on Broadway, with the original cast. Went by myself the first time, then made others go the next two times. I needed to share that amazing experience. ❤
I was introduced to the songs in RENT in HS. Because I sang in the show choir in HS (and no it was nothing like Glee..haha). We sang a medley of the song in RENT and loved the songs. But I didn't watch the movie til way later and it is such a good movie. A lot of people have this thing in their head that all musicals are like "The Sound of Music". I personally love musicals and their are a lot of different types and a lot of different songs. Anyway, glad you put this up, "Seasons of Love" is one of my favorite songs in this movie.
I think I knew Seasons Of Love before I watched Rent but that was basically it. Then I spotted it on netflix one day n decided it was about time I watch such an iconic musical. I cried for 2 hrs after it ended. I mean really, not a feel good musical. A relatable in the hardest of times and good musical, but not a musical u watch when u wanna feel good about the world lol.
Here’s the fun part that was 3 different cities. New York (the bicycling only), Outside was Los Angeles sound stage (with one small addition of a shot done in SF) and Inside the Apartment is Treasure Island, San Francisco.
I've never forgiven Chris Columbus for Randomly de-songging random parts (where Angel and Tom Collins meet, for example). The Original Cast Recording is Gold, though!
While I agree with you, but that's the difference between a movie and a stage musical. Some things sound better in a dialogue instead of a song, if you're aiming it to an audience that isn't theatre crowd who know what they're in for when they go to the movie. I'd say most of Columbus's decisions made it better and helped bring new crowd to the theater and specifically to RENT. Especially the reworked arrangements of the songs
Rent is my favorite musical! I just saw the national tour last year and it was so fucking amazing. I’ve wanted to see it in person since I was in high school and I’m in my 30s now and finally got to see it. My second favorite musical is Rocky Horror Picture Show, you should definitely check that out as well!
Idk what other musicals you've watched but if you really want to go outside the box with musicals Repo: A Genetic Opera and Reefer Madness the Musical are must sees. RENT is good but I will never forgive the movie version for casting their Mimi, she just doesn't have pipes required. Compare Broadway cast recording Mimi vs Rosario Dawson and I will skip the movie version every single time
Obviously, they tried to get the entire original cast but couldn't get Mimi and Joanne. I personally think RD did a good job. No, she doesn't have the pipes of a stage singer, but she fit well with a cast of people who had so much history and chemistry. And the actress who plays Joanne is fabulous. I can't remember her name but Take Me or Leave Me is one of my favorite scenes in the movie. (Not sure if that's the actual title but you know the song I'm talking about 😁)

@lizzy's mom I don't think correcting the difference between someone dying of an Aortic Dissection and Aids is being "Picky"
@@mattbrock7031 THANK YOU!!! Lmao. Like those are two VERY different ways for a person to die.

After watching the movie TEAM AMERICA: World Police, I can never look at " Rent" the same. LOL

LOVE RENT!!!!!!!!!
late to this but you should if you haven't already react to the stage production. the 2008 final broadway performance is up on UA-cam.
Dude you need to react to Repo the genetic opera. Really rock inspired, you’d love it
You need to watch the stage version...it is so much better than the movie! There is a live shot of it available!
