great idea, now I'm looking for an old electric wood chipper.

You might want to take the larger wood chippers to a fabricator and install a screen in it to make sure the corn if ground fine.

okay, I can do all that. I never thought of using a wood chipper to grind with. I can get plenty of corn in my area of Va.and I will grind cob, stalks and all for different feeds.

Tim Beverly that is great, you can ferment the silage and its great for feeding cows.

That would come in handy making moonshine

I though the video was going to be how corn cobs are ground up to make fuel pellets but this is a clever use as well.

Good thinking. They make angled funnels. You could dump in the feed and walk away.

That's a great idea. A small concrete mixer works well as a feed mixer for small batches. The fines don't tend to settle out in it.

That is what I use. :) haha

FarmLifeNC We used to do that when we tried to replicate small batches of feed we got from the local feed store, but we could never get the ration exactly like their feed. We had built an actual mixer out of a 55 gal barrel with a cone at the bottom and a auger up the center, but we couldn't slow it down enough to mix.

very clever and smart idea but just wondering is it not cheaper (in the long run when you factor in wear & tear on your wood chipper) to buy the cracked corn??

Great! I need some way to crack corn for my goats without pulverizing it to powder. That chipper results looks good.

My local Harbor Freight sells light chippers. What size motor does yours have and did you install some type of screen.?

Looks like this does the job just fine. I'd personally knock together a hopper to replace the funnel, but you're definitely getting the job done like this.
I'm glad to hear the new fence is working to keep the stray mutts off your birds.
How much of your feed is farm grown and how much is bought?
Thanks for all the new videos. Glad to get caught up on the farm. Interesting stuff.

this year I will continue to buy feed, but I will be supplementing with things grown on the farm, this afternoon I am going to go buy field corn seed and will be growing that this year.

Looks like a good grind. not too much dust.
Did you consider my idea of putting a live trap built into the side of your bird cages?

I finished the fence surrounding all of my animals (about 3 acres) so are so good nothing has been attacked.

    Well now,
Would you consider running that though again to mix with other grains and minerals?

Inventive! I guess you can add an amount of mineral / vitamin supplement to the bad directly but what about Protein - soya?.
Do you feed in troughs or on the ground for the smaller / younger birds?

    • @FarmLifeNC
      @FarmLifeNC  9 років тому

Yes Dan, I formulate diets for my animals. Once I use up a diet i got from a friend that I mix i will start adding other ingredients. I feed in troughs and feeders.

Just out of curiosity: could you run the cracked corn through a second time to get a finer grind?
