Looks like you beat me to it. : ) Good work, Keep it up!
Thanks Derek. Appreciate that! Apologies. Perhaps we should coordinate our videos? Lol. The great thing is there is so much good music to choose from!
Also... forgot to say, I think you should still do this one, if you want. Maybe down the road or something? There's bound to be new reactions to it and even if there is not, there are so many reactions that don't get used in these videos...
I just know I would be one of the first to run to your channel and watch it. lol You are one of the only UA-camrs I've had the notifications turned on for since the day I found your channel. Lots of respect for what you do.
@@WonderMommaOG Much appreciated, thank you!
One of you two need to do reactions to Meatloaf's Paradise by the dashboard lights. :-)
Ha! I actually thought i was on Derek's channel. New sub @Momma
As a white metal dude, when these guys came out, we were all like, "yeeeeeahhh, you see? Anyone can get into metal! Metal is for all of us."
Yes, same. It was a very positive and encouraging discovery for me. Some say that the fact they are black didn't even get a second thought at the time. That just wasn't my experience. It was a very profound moment in time for me that only encouraged an already developing humanist attitude. lol
They weren't exactly "metal"... "Glamour Boys" is more of a pop song. While they were generally were hard rock, they definitely weren't a strict metal band.
I beg to differ. Not anyone could do what they did.
I was a young white kid and this song was one that got me into the whole genre. I could not wait to see this video on MTV when I was a kid. These guys fucking rocked. Fucking rocked. First rock song that made me think.
I was 12 years old when Vivid was released. At that time, I was already listening to Thrash Metal and Death Metal for years. Living Colour was instantly accepted and loved by the metal community. Vivid is an instant classic. The entire album is solid. Another favorite track of mine is "Open Letter (To a Landlord)".
Living Colour played at CBGB's (a beloved Metal & Hardcore venue in NYC.) Living Colour released several more albums after Vivid. All of which are excellent, IMO. Corey Glover's iconic vocals appear in other side projects too. Check out Ultraphonix and Stevie D featuring Corey Glover.
"I exploit you, still you love me"
Now THAT'S a bar. Scary how relevant it still is
Vernon Reid = most underappreciated guitar god ever
Yes, and we know exactly why that is the case....
Honely, why isn't he better known? The man is AMAZING.
@@libertine40 he was on a cover of a magezine in the mid 80s. Nice try tho
@@libertine40 tbf hendrix is always like the number 1 guitarist of all time on most main stream lists lol
@@legendsbeast4624 Do you even hear yourself? "On the cover of *A* magazine *in the 80s* ..." (emphasis mine). Please...
We should actually make this song huge again. With today's issues we need to let people hear it, it holds as true now as it ever was.
YES!!!
EXACTLY.
It is still huge. thanks to CM Punk
I agree. Song is timeless and apropos for today's world. Living Colour's lyrics have always been socially conscious.
I have been finding myself feeling the same way about "Free Your Mind" by En Vogue a lot recently.
I'm 67 years old an remember when this came out. Oh my God, The Power !! I'm so happy to see the reactions of these wonderful people, the tears are flowing here.
That’s dope as hell Mr. James
And nobody gave a rat turd about race back then. Love Rears Its Ugly Head I think is LCs best song, slightly better. I wish there was a montage of people listening to that one. I know most would agree when they hear it.
48. Love, love, loved this song from day 1. Awesome to see so many discover and understand this song, now. All time jam!
@shack8110 now you're just lying. Racism was a massive issue, and even this very band had given interviews and stated they had an extremely hard time breaking in the genre specifically because of their ethnicity. No one wanted to listen to a band like theirs. Next time, stick to something you actually know, if there is such a thing.
Not just a black rock band...a kick-ass black rock band!
I never looked at them as a black rock band.i was in my teens when this came out and Everybody loved and appreciated them.nobody underappreciated them at all.we looked at them as much needed rock musicians.it was a good thing just like Jimi Hendrix was a good thing.musicians just need to be appreciated for who they are.
A kickass band period
@@robynhurley5119 That is back when we HEARD the music and didn't see who was making it. 🤘
MORE PEOPLE NEED TO HEAR THIS SONG. It is MUCH more important now than when it was released.
Vernon is so underrated it should be a crime. He's up there with Slash!
I would argue he is probably better than Slash. More like a metally version of Jeff Beck.
Slash is fine but this kid was on another level IMO.
Crazy to see how many people never knew these guys were a black metal band. They were awesome and their songs were interesting. Great compilation again.
Can only imagine if they listened to Bodycount or Bad Brains? Or Fishbone
More of a hard rock band then metal
Body count people need to hear them
If only they were a black black metal band
I'm guessing a lot of these people weren't around when this came out or something.
Their whole discography is amazing, but that debut album “Vivid” is a masterpiece all the way through.
Open Letter to a Landlord deserves a reaction by everyone in this video.
Vernon Reid is a genuine guitar god. I remember when I first heard this song on the radio, back when it was first released. I kept shouting "WHO ARE THESE GUYS?!" to my friends. Killer.
“When a leader speaks, that leader dies”. MLK on screen during that line. Powerful song. Love these guys from day one. Lol. I’m 53 so y’all are listening to the music that raised me! 💜💜💜💜
They did a great job delivering that line!! With the imagery as well woooooah. This blew my mind on how accurate it is
Right on brother....same same
It really is nearly impossible to explain how GIGANTIC this song was.
It was... just...
F*cking EPIC!
And nobody gave a shit about race
I remember when it was released. I was also like who are these guys, they are awesome!
Fun Fact - Lead singer, Corey Glover played one of the soldiers in the movie "Platoon."
oh wow your right..."lets didi Taylor, lets go!" didnt he stab himself in the leg?ive seen this music video a thousand times an watch platoon over an over an Never knew that was the lead singer!Wow you really do learn smething new everyday. right on ,thanks.
“We gonna get high-ty, high!!”
And Danny Glover's nephew
Yes sir
The message in this song is extremely relevant to today. Great song loved it when it first came out and still love it.
It isn't that's it's " extremely relevant" now its just that nothing changes!
instant classic from the mid-80s that all us metal heads immediately took to our hearts for obvious reasons
forgot to mention their other epic song - Love Rears its Ugly Head. Love that s***!
That guitar riff dude...
@@stevesmith9617 call me crazy but i love the solo too.
@@cshepard09 it's wild and messy. Wat a great 80a song. The whole decade was wild and messy
@@stevesmith9617 people didn't give 2 craps about race, it was great music was all we cared about
To each of you that reacted to Living Colour, the cat on guitar is Vernon Reid he is the most overlooked Rock guitarist there is. 2nd if you were amazed by that there is a band called Fishbone they are a Ska,funk, punk rock band all brotha’s from L.A. Also, Ice-T has a band called Body Count. Also, a now defunct band called Unlocking the Truth . All these bands are very good.
Thank you!
Don't forget Bad Brains. One of the best live acts I've ever seen.
24-7 Spyz!
And Vernon Reid is a really cool guy. Met him once, he was very down to earth.
yeah, 'there goes the neighborhood', baby!
Vernon Reid is extremely underrated. He is an absolute monster on the guitar.
Guitarist name is Vernon Reid and he's worth looking into, much more where that came from. The man is top tier all the way.
Ghandi is the epitome of this songs meaning. He wasn't a good person, he was only portrayed that way. Liberated a nation, BUT he hated black people and slept with kids. True story.
Same for all the people named. Stalin was a hero for pulling Russia through WW2, then went on to exterminated millions of his own countrymen. MLK and JFK were both prolific adulterers. FDR was notorious for backroom deals and corruption.
Goes to show that people can do some awful things and still accomplish great things.
There's a speech he gave comparing blks to animals.. so yeah Jasso you're right.👍
He also created the forced evacuation and re-settlment of Indians and Pakistanis...over 1millipn died...the path to Hell is paved with good intentions
🤯🤯🤯 I didn't know that!
His racism was very obvious sind he was an avid supporter of the caste system but I didn't know he was a pedo. Wth.
These fellows are Rockers. Every band member of whatever band loves this masterpiece. Respect fellows
LIVING COLOUR, Corey Glover, Vernon Reid, Muzz Skillings & Will Calhoun, is one helluva ROCK band!! I loved them from the get go! Their album "VIVID" is still one of my favorites! Every song on VIVID is awesome!🤘🤘
Every long haired metal head, knew of Living Color and rocked that shit🤟🤟🤟
Saw these guys several times back in the day and recently in the early 2010s at a Hendrix tribute event. They still kill it live. Massively underappreciated band.
Incredible job going to full on 9 screens while Vernon Reid absolutely DESTROYED that guitar solo. This was such an enjoyable experience. Thanks for the hard work putting it together.
Wow, thanks!
Vernon Reid #Legendary
I read somewhere that he was playing 1/64 notes.
The 9 screen reaction shot was a genius idea. It was pure joy watching Vernon melt everyone’s faces!
The song and band were way ahead of their time. I graduated in 1988 and i remember when this album came out. It shook the music industry.
I love that people are "discovering" this song again. It is as relevant today as it was back then. I love the reactions as if on cue: Whoa, they're black, whoa they jam... whoa, the lyrics!! And Vernon Reid is one of the greatest guitarists in rock!
Vernon Reed's guitar mastery is epic....never played the solo the same way twice....this video version is one of his best....
Its so awesome to see how open minded people can appreciate great music regardless of skin color. We didnt have this problem back in the 80's.
I snuck downstairs after bedtime to watch them perform on the Arsenio Hall show. Got in trouble because I kept turning up the volume on the TV.
TOTALLY WORTH IT!!!!
GREAT BAND 🤘
thats so funny you said tht i remember my lil nephew an niece asking me to let them watch this in 89 the night before i shipped off to marine bootcamp. I forgot abt tht memory, WOW it was all ahead of us back then!!thanks for the rewind, hope this comment finds you doing well.
Vernon Reid is one of the best guitarists I have ever heard live. Loved the album, all my friends had it.
Vernon Reid is, was and ALWAYS will be the greatest guitarist in the game. He's a genius.
"Letter to a landlord" also by this very band is incredible also!
check it out here!!! ua-cam.com/video/6V5VkMqM07s/v-deo.html
One of all time favorite song by them! ✌🏾
When this song came out, I was 22. It was off the chain!! It was all over rock radio, and they opened up for the Rolling Stones.
Another great reaction montage. It's fun to see all these reactors having a lightbulb moment in realizing the band is black. I wonder how they'd react to the band Death, who were three brothers (in both senses of the word) from Detroit who formed a punk band in the early 1970s. So, they were pioneers on two fronts: one of the first (if not _the_ first) all-black recording rock bands, and one of the first (if not _the_ first) punk bands anywhere. There's even a documentary about them ("A Band Called Death").
EDIT: An additional note of appreciation for your informative descriptions under the videos, which add some nice background and context for the videos themselves.
Thank you so much. I completely spaced that part of the description. lol I have now gone in and fixed it. Thank you for your comments!
@@WonderMommaOG It happens, lol. You're doing great. I'm always tweaking the descriptions of my own vids, and yet am still constantly surprised that even a year or two later I still find mistakes there.
Corey and the boys influenced alot of future hard rock and metal bands. They were speaking straight facts in that song. Another amazing video. Keep up the great work. 😊💙🙏
Many thanks!
@@WonderMommaOG my pleasure.
High school music was off the chain in the 80's. I love these guys. And all of you here. ❤
*Still get chills, all these years later, when Vernon hits that solo!* 🎸 🔥
*I LOVE THESE VIDEOS!!!*
*THANK YOU!!!*
💜💫✌🏼🎵
Seriously, rock n roll and metal is for everyone and anyone, forget about the ethnicity, background or origins. Living Colour is the proof of that and they gave out a deep and strong message.
As a white metalhead gal I say ROCK ON EVERYONE! 🤘🏻
Kick ass song, old but still relevant today amazes me how many of us don’t know Living Colour 😮 I saw the video on MTV back when they played videos 😅 My son shared this reaction video with me. He was digging it and I referenced it to explain the draw of our 45th President. He embodies the dark side of the Cult of Personality. “I exploit you, still you love me” “I tell you 1 and 1 makes 3”
I was 16 years old in high school (1989) when this song came out on the radio. I loved it the first time I hear it and has been with me since then, as Rock lover, I'm from México, I wasn't so surprised when first I see the video, not so much because I have seen videos of Jimi Hendrix playing guitar, but It was refreshing to hear a band like Living Colour.
You are the best.
To see the surprise on people's faces.
We rocked out to this band.
The reactions were right.
They were to hard rock for the eighties.
Had they been a seventies band.
They would have been legendary.
You are one hell of a director.
MASSIVE RESPECT for the structure, tone and mastery created by Vernon Reid. When I first heard these guys in 1988 (!!) I was so blown away!
Guitarist here is very skilled and always hoped to hear alot more from him
Cult of Personality, an amazing gem of a song from an amazing gem of a band! Been a fan of that song since I was a kid. Sad that none of these people had heard of the song before, and it’s sad but funny how many were shocked they were all black.
I just wanted to recommend their first album to Anyone who hasn’t heard it. I was a teen in the 80s, this is still one of the best rock albums from that era.
That's the exact face I had in the 1980s when I found out this incredible band was all Black guys rocking HARD. AWESOME.
I was there when this came out. A Filipino Metalhead, I am to this day. When this came out, it didn’t hit me as anything other than. a great song. Back then, to just about everyone, Race was an issue of the PAST. White rappers, black rockers were the on the rise, as completely natural progression. I miss those times greatly. I WISH we could go back to when RACE, wasn’t the focus. And being decent, was.
Well said!
I was 18 when this came out.
When I first heard it I blasted it as well as U2's bullet the blue sky. I couldn't get enough of them. I'm glad that others have discovered them.
This song never stops being relevant. It might actually be getting even more relatable over time!
Such a good song, that is even more true today than back then! Vernon Reid is a monster on that guitar. When I was a kid we all tried learning this on guitar. The problem is trying to recreate Vernon's fluid-like wizardry. Its impossible.
Not only is this song one of the most important songs ever. Right up there with Imagine. It's also my most favorite song ever.
Cult of Personality is what got Cadet Bone Spurs elected POTUS. And the world is poorer for it.
Cult of personality is also what got Obama elected (and Bill Clinton, and Ronald Reagan, and JFK, and probably about half the other presidents that have ever been in office). The world isn't poorer for Trump being president. The world is poorer due to the reaction by the jerkoffs in the media and the Washington establishment (but there I go repeating myself) to Trump being president. Their "cure" has done way more damage to this country than Trump's "disease" ever did.
From Malcolm X to FDR what a ride! Vernon Reid is a guitarist of epic proportions that is not always talked about but all you have to do is listen nothing more nothing less. The power that Corey Glover uses to deliver those lyrics is amazing and perfect for this song.
Can't believe so many folks hadn't heard of these guys. They played "Cult of Personality" on Saturday Night Live!
During "THE" solo. The guy in the green shirt, top middle is hilarious. Pure bewilderment.
This is easily one of the Greatest Rock Songs of all Time!
Knowledge is power, but music is Passion.
Living Colour, take your place among the greatest of all time!
Can a brother, get some guitar lessons, Vern?
Love this band! Flashbacks to teen years watching them a lot on MTV. The message in this song is still so relevant today. Timeless 🤘🏻
"They're black?" 😅🤣😂 You guys had me cracking up. I love this song. From the late 80s, but I always pump it up when it comes on the radio. They're pretty awesome. Thanks everyone for the entertainment - I really enjoyed this reaction video! 👏👍👏👍
The bass line in this song is insane. And they could play anything. They have an amazing blues song caked love rears up is ugly head. Incredible
Truly the Magnum Opus of Living Colour. I'm glad this song is having an impact on all these folks!
Every one in this band was killing it but that shredding on that guitar
Living Colour was the bomb. I remember when they came out. I was modeling for United Colors of Benetton and we did a runway show to this song. They wore a lot of UCOB colors as did everyone. If you weren’t brighter than the sun you weren’t hip. NEON WAS KING
I remember UCOB. Girbaud jeans... and Cross Colours. 😅
As a drummer growing up in the 70s and 80’s I knew these guys could rock. I saw the open for The Rolling Stones in the late 90s . These dudes can rock!
These guys were incredible, Cory (the singer) was into doing movies at that time and IMO, if they were able to keep it together the sky was the limit, they had other songs from their album that will blow you away as well. To this day I listen to this and... It puts me in a better frame of mind, the guitar solos, especially the 2nd one is absolutely insane.
Caught these guys in 86 in Daytona Beach at a little club called the American Room, blew the roof of the joint!!
I've loved Living Colour since I was a kid. Got everything they've ever done. Amazing band and Vernon Ried is one of my favorite guitar players.
One of the all time greatest rock songs.
Truth then, truth now. Let's get it together people. Together. Love and respect is the key.
You ALL are amazing. Thanks for this video!
When these guys came around people went nuts! Personally I loved everything about them and I wish they were still making music. It didn’t matter what color you were when they made music everyone loved them. They were one of the best things that ever happened to music!
I appreciate how you got all the "wait they're black?!" comments out of the way at the beginning, and then began the real reactions. I think that was a really smart move.
The used to play this on MTV all the time. What a great memory! The lead singer, Corey Glover, was also in the movie Platoon! He was that dude near the end of the movie when the helicopter takes off saying "we gonna get high tonight!" lol legend
Saw these guys at lollopalooza back in the day. Vernon Reid can shred with the best of ‘em.
WHEN THIS CAME OUT ON MTV. I WAS BLOWN AWAY AND LOVED IT. STILL DO TODAY.
Let's put it this way y'all. I've been jamming since the 70s. And I've never ever seen an all black rock band that jammed like this. And put shame to a lot of other rock bands. They were new and unique and had their own sound. And me coming from the greatest Rock era of our time loved every minute of it😂😊
I saw these guys open for The Rolling Stones in 1989, they jammed. 🥁☮☘
@WonderMommaOG!!! Brilliant! 🎶🤟👻
Many thanks!
Obviously this song was on MTV non-stop, they were huge. Amazing vocals and musicians.
My favorite part is the beginning when everyone is like "THESE DUDES ARE BLACK?" Yeah man, the guitarist is like world famous. These dudes have been here for a minute.
I was a 27 year old man when this came out, I absolutely loved it on it’s surface, but I never truly understood it, now as a 60 something year old man I can truly say this was truly prescient, it’s like they had a crystal ball, so poetically describing the trumpist, maga, neo-nazi, cult of personality we have now in 2022. If you need and example, just look at some clips from the CPAC convention in Dallas, TX going on this weekend.
Well said. It's a damn shame, the state of the world currently.
Sadly, the same thing applies to Joe Biden. People know him from being V.P. and the memes. Look into his past politics and you'll see he's bad too.
@@modernenglishman7802 even if what you say is true, his current behavior/actions are what’s relevant. Biden just signed into law one of the most impactful (read, beneficial) bills in the history of the US, the inflation reduction act which will finally tackle climate change amongst a myriad of other things that people who are not part of the trump cult care about and are important for our survival as a species. Filthy, abominable Trump cares nothing about anything other than himself. The sooner he’s pushing up daisies or in an orange jumpsuit (to match his skin) the better off the world will be. Biden has turned out to be one of the best presidents we have have in modern day history - and the fascist Republican Party, Fox News, et. al. is just seething over it.
@@modernenglishman7802 they all are. Lol.
When they first came out...Mind Blowing like the beginning of Star Wars and the Matrix! That Voice; Electric Guitar rift, and Energy presence! Amazing even to this day...Timeless!

I'd love to hang out at a party with every single one of the reviewers in this montage. That'd be one hell of a room.
that would be a trip! a bunch of GEN X'ers, millinials,an a couple of gen Z'ers? Id pay the cover charge to see that...now tht i think about it........maybe not!lol🤟
When these guys came out on video, some people were surprised.., I was excited. I really hoped Living Colour would inspire more black rock bands so we can hear their stories or their messages that isn’t known in this genre. Sadly, they might just be an exception.
I remember when they came out it was AMAZING. His voice is on fire and the song has an eternal message. I don't know how they faded away.
While I was waiting to get a haircut in park slope Brooklyn the lead guitarist was getting his hair done and also the drummers mom worked at my job, she was so proud of him.
The whole album, Vivid, is epic. One of the best ever in my white boy opinion! Saw them once, also epic, open for The Rolling Stones in Vancouver, BC. Five hour drive was worth every second!
Every musician in this band, is an absolute BEAST!!
Vernon Ried is so underrated. One of my fav guitarist
I saw these guys at Afro punk a few years ago, and I had the most amazing time. They played along with bad brains, and it’s great to see that we have some black Rockstars out there. We need more!
Saw them at Lollapalooza in 89, first show. They were one of the best that day. TOOL was unknown and relegated to the side stage. This is a must have album, every song is amazing. Lead guitarist is Chuck Berry's grandson or nephew. Great stuff
I got all excited when I saw WonderMomma at the top of my feed. Turns out, it was this one-and why not watch it again? Gotta do something until Comet Momma comes round again! Miss you!
😅
That riff!🔥🤘🔥
Saw these guys live at the LA Coliseum back in ‘89, opening for G&R and The Rolling Stones - their set was amazing
These dudes rocked like no other!!!, hurman is one of the best guitar players ever, and hardly gets recognized, great band, great tunes, big inspiration to me
I was never a metal fan. But for some reason, I loved this group.
Metal knows know color. Rock is rock, baby
This whole album kicked ass. They opened for the Rollin Stones in Tampa.. me and some chick like 60 people over we’re the only ones standing the entire time. They kicked ass. 🤘❤️
Momma comin' up on the outside! From putting all the "They're black?!" reactions right up front to the tiny tot boogieing, it's a treat from start to too-quick end. Thanks, Momma!!
Much appreciated! Once upon a time, I too, was caught off guard by the fact Living Colour was a fully African American hard rock band! One of the most memorable and influential discoveries of my life that summer of 1988. This band played a direct role in opening my eyes and leading me to my state of mind today... we are all human have far much more in common with each other than anything that makes us different!
@@WonderMommaOG Well said. And it highlights one of the things I love about reactions. Seeing the young people discover what we've been listening to for 40 years and having all those pesky preconceived notions go poof! These reactions prove that we're all the same. Just people trying to get by and jamming along the way. BTW, speaking of African-American bands that rock, ever check out Body Count? Look out. Onyx/Biohazard is good, too. Keep rockin' Momma. We're all here for ya!
This one is a hard rockin tune. The brothas was layin it down! 👍👍🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
