I think he really did struggle with the morality of his job early on. He was a millionaire by age 20, for what? For getting up on stage and singing vaguely offensive songs? What does that contribute to the world? This was a kid who got into Harvard and grew up thinking he'd become a doctor or a minister, but then chose a very different path. Ironically, at this point he's helped more people with his work than he ever would have encountered in those other professions.

I was a little bit disappointed you didn't elaborate on that even though you caught it. It's such a powerful line, but still you did a great job and broke other parts down better then most of the other reaction channels. You got a like from me Dave, keep it up.
This may be a bit of a pessimistic take, but I find it so telling and ironic that all of the comedians are laughing historically at this song when in reality the song is completely serious and blatantly calling them out. This, personally, is probably my favorite bo burnham song. I'm an artist myself in many different fields, so this hit like a train. I'll be honest I love bos humor, he's one of my favorite comedians, but this song is not funny to me, well parts perhaps on first listen, but this song is more emotionally impactful to me than it is funny. bo himself even says it isn't funny. Like we all laugh at what sounds like jokes on the surface but I think this song in particular is just as he says, a song to help him sleep at night. He means every word. maybe not ever word but damn near.

He’s just a kid sitting in a room with Marc Maron, Ray Romano, Judd Apatow and Garry Shandling and even at that young age, you could see that these wildly successful older comics be overshadowed by this brilliant kid. He's very self-aware. I find that self-aware people understand too much about themselves and the world around them. It seems to be a curse for them unless they can find avenues (drugs) or creativity or therapy to help them understand that they need to not take themselves or the world as seriously as they are. Bo chose creativity then therapy to help himself. Maybe it's pessimistic but I feel that is why so many true artists turn to drugs or suicide because they don't understand why they see things the way they do. Thank you for your thoughts!

It seems that even with physical and monetary needs secured, those of us who make a point, a habit, or just happen to be highly self-aware are always trying to see every angle. To me it's a kind of recognition of the interconnections that make society function from the individual to the global human community, even when we may be personally doing well, we recognize that just our little pale blue dot of a planet is so vast and complex to contemplate that we never really feel at ease. There's always something F'ed up going on somewhere to someone or something that is suffering needlessly and how we might be able to start a chain of action that may change those circumstances because we know what it's like to suffer with problems we can't fix. So we try to do what we can in solidarity with our fellow human beings...but it never seems like the war is won, there's always another battle... Personally, at the rate that American social breakdown, tensions in global politics, and economic instability are increasing the levels of suffering, more battles are started, and we can't help but try to parse out the nuances and figure out something...anything we can do to spread that empathy that we all need as social animals... Sorry for the diatribe, but topics always have a way of chaining together when (at least I) start trying to understand the fabric of this crazy reality as we travel our paths from cradle to grave...
There are so many lines where you can hear bo’s genuine self contempt and hatred for the modern version of ‘art’ where everyone is driven by greed instead of passion for bettering the craft. It’s incredibly sad to hear from such a young man with incredible talent and such self awareness.

He really thinks what he's doing is abhorrent or even sinful, but still needs it as an outlet for what he's feeling.
So when Bo first started in the early UA-cam days, he was really just uploading funny songs he wrote to entertain his friends. I don’t think he actually planned to go into comedy as a profession. But one of his videos went viral and his career just took off from there. This song is from one of his first specials. I always saw it as his way of repenting. He loves what he does and he loves the craft. But in the beginning it was all just for fun on UA-cam. When he decided to make it a career I think he just started to feel like a fraud. He saw how much it cost to make a show (even a smaller one like this special, compared to his others). So he was suddenly faced with the reality that these people are “wasting” their hard earned money to watch him make silly jokes for an hour. It’s hard for him to justify. I think on one had he understand the value of laughter, but at the same time he doesn’t feel like it’s really worth the money people have to fork out to see him. He’s not saving lives, he’s not inventing something to progress society; he just makes “silly jokes”. He feels like he took an easy way out just because people online encouraged his attention seeking behaviors. I’m sure on some level he understands how brilliant his mind is and what a profound impact he has. But like many other artists throughout history, he is his harshest critic. It’s like he’s convinced himself that no matter how introspective or creative he is with his work, it’s not enough to compensate for the idea that he’s taking advantage of hard working people. So like he said, this song helps him sleep. He’s calling himself (and others) out for being selfish.

He’s a true empath and clearly feels guilt about all the money “wasted” on what is essentially a “silly show, as he puts it. He brings great happiness to many people (unlike a A lot of the “edgy“ garbage comedians out there) so, personally, I think he should be proud of what he’s doing, even though I understand that, as a true empath, he Cant help thinking about all the people that could be helped with the money that is being spent on you and his promotion and aggrandizement. But, in my opinion, he’s using his platform to make people think about these issues, and he shouldn’t feel guilty at all. He has earned his place (and his success) And he will go down in the pantheon of comics/entertainers as a very special one with a very special message. And a lot of silly ( and brilliant) jokes that make people happy And feel less alone. For a quick laugh, check out the video of Katy Perry introducing Bo at the UA-cam awards. She clearly embodies a lot of the stuff that he detests in the entertainment world and this is obvious on his (unimpressed) face as he’s being introduced. She essentially talking about him just turning 18 (in a very creepy way) And afterward, he simply says “thank you Mrs. Perry“, pointing out that she’s a married woman and her comments on this just-turning-18 boy kinda gross ( and, not to mention, would be considered wildly inappropriate for a man to do). But she gets away with it because she’s Katy Perry
I think this song is Bo's reflection on what art, in particular his art, is really about. I feel that he is not afraid to send a message, only to make an appeal, and this desire is also what moves all the music: the real objective of art, and its real merit, is expression. He says that no art deserves or should be made to achieve anything other than what the making of art itself provides: expression, connection, an impression of you on the world. Making art for him is not something that should be rewarded, because making art itself should be its own reward. Art only has a real reason to exist when it can, alone, justify its own existence. Art is a necessity, not something a person gives for a paycheck; that gives people who work in drugstores, who wake up early. Making art and still being paid for it, receiving money from people, being paid by them to receive applause and spotlight, is the opposite of making art for art's sake. At least this is my review of the song 😔

Just keep in mind that Bo was raised in a religion that he became jaded by and it's a criticism of those in the community who deserve criticism. I know you have your own beliefs and you don't always agree with Bo's criticisms of religion, so I thought it was worth the warning. It's probably my favorite of his raps. Another really good one is Nerds, but that one has much more inappropriate lyrics and may be difficult to get past youtube censors lol

This is the music version of imposter syndrome which is what happens to people whp get introduced to fame super fast. They dont feel deserving or worthy of the attention or notoriety or money. Its a really interesting phenomenon.
