  • This story about Kiwi pilot and entrepreneur Tim Wallis (later Sir Tim), presented by Melanie Reid, aired on New Zealand's version of 60 Minutes in May or June 1992. It covers his early years with venison shooting and pioneering live deer recovery, his interest in warbird aircraft and the development of the Warbirds Over Wanaka airshow - with a focus on the 1992 event - and his early ventures into doing business in post-Soviet Russia. It also features beautiful air-to-air footage of Tim flying his beloved Mk.XVI Spitfire TB863, which he owned from 1988 to 2006, over Lake Wanaka and flying with Melanie Reid in his Hughes 500D ZK-HOT. As a point of interest it includes Prue Wallis coining the phrase “Hurricane Tim”, which went on to be the title of Neville Peat’s superb biography of Sir Tim.
My mother recorded this from NZ television and for some reason it has always been in black and white. My apologies for any visual or audio quality issues.
In memory of Sir Timothy William Wallis (9 September 1938 - 17 October 2023).
