Thanks to the people of Hamburg for having us this sunday! Your city is a lucky city for us, it seems... We could've lost or drawn to Poland today entirely too easily. And in a group with another very strong team and two teams that aren't actually WEAK, that coul;d've been the end for us. Compared to us, Germany looked pretty strong in their opener, though I don't think I should eleborate too much about that in this channel...

The thing with the Germans is something from the past. We beat them in the euro's in 1988 and since then we get along nice. We have two main 'enemies' Spain because of the game in 2010 that can't be mentioned and Portugal. Whenever we play against Portugal, it becomes a bloodbath. And most of the time we lose against them. This European Cup we are likely to play Portugal in the quarter finals. People are already talking about it and we haven't played a game jet! 😂😂

Indeed, 1988 was the best thing to happen to Dutch-German relations. It was closure, it was like the disappointment of 74 prolonged the hate for Germans from WWII while their economic success felt a bit unfair too while the Dutch were just climbing out of a deep and long crisis in 88. Their players weren't the nicest either, they were still a bit of the villains of international football. Most liked to see them lose ot others too. They also went trough a very weak spell around the 2000's, and actually came over to ask for advice and look at our football infrastructure and education.
I feel now Portugal and Argentina have both taken half to the hate but that's exclusively about football, with the Germans it was not.

I don't know that the "football hatred" towards Germany ended in 1988. I remember the Rijkaard/Völler game in 1990 ;-). I also remember very distinctly how happy we all were when Germany was eliminated by Bulgaria in 1994 (one day after Holland lost to Brazil; the German loss helped us forget the Dutch loss). But in 2004 we drew Germany 1-1, we were all happy with the outcome, and all tensions seemed to have gone. (Everything of course purely my personal perception.)
What may actually have helped is the German "ohne Holland fahren wir zur WM" joy of 2002, which I think most of us could appreciate :).

The rivalry is gone. Germany is an fantastic country and a nice neighbour. In the early days, when we played against Germany, we had WWII in the back of our mind. My parents for example had to flee our occupied country. The Germans where marching through the streets and caused death and destruction. The hatred towards the aggressor was enormous. That sentiment is gone. When the Netherlands now plays against Germany, it is a healthy rivalry: 'big Germany' against the small Netherlands. Thats oke. In the Netherlands we have the proverb: Better a good neighbor than a distant friend

I was also there in 1988, but not on site (in Germany). I was only 16, but I partied in our town at the time and was extremely drunk for the first time, which was also the only time I got away with it at home. Glad that I was able to consciously experience this at the time, our first (and so far only) prize with a well-balanced team. With leaders, followers and bench members who knew their role. In addition, with the necessary luck, which you always need in a tournament to progress. Thanks to Wim Kieft's late, and lucky, goal (82nd minute) we won against Ireland and went further in the tournament, that's the bit of luck you need (and perhaps force?) as a team.

We all remember beating Germany in the semi-finals of Euro 88, but almost nobody remembers we beat Russia in the final to become champions that year. What a lovely post Mert!
I always get positive chills seeing Bergkamp.
Being Dutch, and a old high school class mate of Bergkamp it has a special place in my heart.
Dutch fans are funny, humorous and wild, but also always think they know everything better.
I am a proud orange fan, but I am also humble to the beauty of other cultures.
When the Scots, Irish or Brits are singing for their team I get goosebumps. It's old, loud and full of history, and it feels like everbody can really sing! ( the dutch can't really sing...it's hoempapa and lalalaa 😂)
And the soccer sport in general could find many sportive examples from your rugby world. Where there is still some respect for the referees and the sportmans don't act like actors sewing eachother.
To finish with the simple wise words of Johan Cruyff; if you don't score...you don't win...no matter how beautiful you have played.
    Love from Amsterdam xxx

I was too young in 1974 and 1978 to really know, but it is my impression that the "orange craze" started in 1988 when we managed to qualify for Euro '88 after missing out on WC '82, Euro '84 (thanks Malta) and WC '86. The hype was big in the run up to Euro '88, perhaps also thanks to the then very popular singer André Hazes who had a big hit with "Wij houden van Oranje" (We love Orange), set to the tune of Auld Lang Syne (!!). And of course the outcome of Euro '88 more than matched the hype and the celebrations afterwards were pretty insane, so a new national hobby was born.

I was born after the 74-78 totaalvoetbal years with Michels and Cruyff, but as a young impressionable boy in 1988 I fell in love with Oranje. Big moments I remember are Marco van Basten's hattrick against England, and the very tight semi-final against West Germany, with first a penalty to the Germans, then the Dutch, and then van Bastens goal at the very end. Both my older brothers were fans of Germany, but I stood my ground. To be fair, to be more precise, the effect was even bigger. Gullit, van Basten, Koeman, Rijkhard, Bosman and company didn't make me fall in love only with that specific team or subsequent iterations of the Oranje, but also with football as a sport, with spectator sports as a whole, with the Netherlands as a nation, with Dutch as a language... the effect was profound. And I'm from Finland. Later when our own Jari Litmanen played a big part of his career for Ajax, it didn't exactly lessen my love :D I have since travalled to the Netherlands many times and learned enough of the language to be able to read simple text (can understand if I read a newspaper, unless it's about very complex issues), but understanding spoken dutch is still difficult. In 1998 I was heartbroken when perhaps the best Oranje I've seen (van der Saar, both de Boers, Cocu, Davids, Jonk, Kluivert, Seedorf, van Bronckhorst, Overmars, Kluivert, Bergkamp) lost on penalties to Brazil in the semi-final. And I had really really liked Brazil, too, since 1990 or at the very least since 1994, so I was a bit surprised with how dissapointed I was. It was perhaps the first time I was reminded of that one can only have one favorite. I really liked Tiki-Taka, too, and developed a fondness for Spain because of it. But I got this same reminder in 2010. I travelled to the Netherlands to see the final, I chose the student city of Groeningen over Amsterdam, to have a better, more intimate party, and I thought that I wouldn't be so dissapointed if Spain wins, because I liked their play, too. How wrong was I. It was an even bigger dissapointment than 1998. No need to talk more about that dissapointment, but it left a wound in my heart, probably very similar to what those older generations felt when experiencing 1974 and 1978. In the 2012 euro qualifications Holland and Suomi were drawn into the same qualifying group, but that was not a problem. I went to see Finland's home game dressed in Orange, and I made some friends (who were dumbfounded). I did not feel wrong to support a team against my home nation, which I love and cherish. As Finland has since become more of a contender to participate in Euros and maybe in worlds, too, it could be more difficult in the future if (and eventually when) they meet. I believe, that I won't be too dissapointed if my country Finland beats my team Oranje, but I may be in for a third reminder, that one can only have one favorite team...

I went to the semi final in Hamburg against Germany and the final in Munich in 1988. I remember it like it was yesterday. It was unbelievable, something totally crazy, especially after the win against the Germans. I went nuts. The outburst of celebrations happened spontanuous, I don't think we will ever experience it again with that intensity, even if we'd become World champions. Which very probably will never happen, considering our habbits in finals 😉

Born in 64 , I saw all the great and less great matches of the Netherlands, the fans are amusing and colorful and can party. Although they can be very critical about the national team. In your video you didn't show Rensenbrink in 74 hitting a couple of minutes before the end of the game the post against Argentina. And in my opinion is van Hanegem the best player we've ever had. He wasn't maybe not that well known, searched less for the media, but a terrific soccer player. And maybe with our best keeper ever, Jan van Beveren, we had a better change against the Germans in 1974. Like the Rangers especially Gazza and McCoist, hope Scotland and The Netherlands play well this Euro Championship. Nice greetings and thanks for the video.

We're actually pretty chummy with the Germans now. But my dad was a wee lad during WW2 and when we played them in 1974 there was definitely some war trauma involved. And when the Germans won it was quite shattering because the Dutch had a way better side, they just forgot that the Germans never give up and only accept defeat after the final whistle is blown. I forgot who said this (Gary Lineker?) but there is a famous quote that goes: “Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes and in the end, the Germans win”
After we beat them in 1988 things kinda normalised.

I'm very proud of Dutch football and not just as cheap chauvinism. That's because we punch far above our weight from a clear vision about the way it should be played and how innovative it often still is, and that's in the football culture right to the bottom. Believe me, I know the bottom, and I have also played with foreigners at that level. There is something about playing together, combining, the third man, triangles, the best and most technical players being recognized more than the goalscorer, that's not so self evident with Germans, Italians, Spanish and 3rd world footballers at low level I noticed.
I'm also proud of harvesting talent better from a small population to take on the big boys, often with a 3, 4 or 12 times bigger talent pool. Beckenbauer was in a helicopter over the Netherlands once and then he understood, for so many football pitches and kids playing on the street or in parks he saw. Also Dutch trainers are educators, they don't just select the best, they want to make players better.
In 74 the Germans were actually a class team and great favorites behoferehand, who played slightly better on the day to win it. It wasn't against all odds. In Argentina all the odds were agains the Netherlands. Cruijff didn't come because of a robbery at his home, and there was something about that final that it was dangerous to win it. 2010 I felt the Netherlands could have played much better the whole tournament but took a defensive approach and had inner team tensions. Can't say they deserved to win.
All other countries have become better at harvesting talent so population size will start to count more and more so it will get harder for the future to have the better players. But looking at the current Dutch team, the Ducht country side is underdelivering talent so there is still room for improvement. Still I guess we just have to play football better to compensate for lesser players. You can lose a semi final to a really good team, no probs. What bothers me is the tournaments wasted by self destruction. The returning toxic egos and often the media involved. 1990, 1996, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2012, 2016, 2020, that's 8 tournaments that the Netherlands was unnecessarily bad or even absent. That really bothers especially you see it coming and is usually about some crucial actors not showing spine and character and kowtowing to the media or popular players.
