Yes Gear 2 is now more efficient, before to use it he had to use it on his whole body which did wear him out faster, now he can do it at will on any limb for a short burst of attacks.

The difference with the strawhats and regular pirates is strawhats don't go plundering and killing, nami steals treasure while the crew likes to dine and dash. The strawhats are pirates because of what i previously said and because they are illegally sailing wherever they want in an unregistered boat and they always flee and resist arrest.

Not really unnecesary fan service, hell, one piece has something for everyone, that's why it's so popular no matter where you're from or what your culture is. I've seen people who outright hate anime because sexy women shouldn't be allowed to exist (not gonna expand on it, you know the type of people i'm talking about) yet they deeply love One Piece storytelling and characters. Others loves the fanservice, others the fights, the emotional moments, etc. It has everything along the best storytelling and worldbuilding in fiction in history.
