Installing a NISMO Steering Wheel on My 370Z

- The first of many videos for Z week. This following week is going to be filled with a awesome changes and upgrades to my 370Z. There isn’t much I can do to the MINI with the engine sent out to get machined, so I’ll be making the most of it and throwing some time and money at the Z. Any ideas as to what else is to come?
My 2014 Touring Sport is a well equipped vehicle with great performance, but like every car, it can always be modified and upgraded. I was able to get my hands on a gently-used authentic NISMO steering wheel on eBay for quite cheap. The original owner of the wheel thought it was damaged as opposed to dirty, which is why I was able to scoop it up for a mere $300. I spent about 10 minutes cleaning it up with Meguiar’s All Purpose Cleaner and a few brushes and it was brought back to life. Just because something is used doesn’t mean it is JUNK.
The retail price of a new NISMO wheel is around $750 USD, not including buttons or anything else, just the alcantara & leather wheel. The part number for an authentic wheel is 48430-6GA0A. Used ones float around eBay as they are desired, however they typically go for around $5-600.

How do you realign the steering wheel with the steering column after messing up the angle? When I align the lines, the steering wheel doesn’t fully seat down on the steering column.
Superb video and instruction. I'm blown away at how many viewers think this is being done just for the stripe. If you've never had your hands on the Alcantara wrapped nismo wheel you have no idea what an awesome upgrade this is. Nice video quality too. Thanks!

I'm just not sold on suede/alcantara for surfaces you touch regularly. I always find when Alcantara gets oils from your skin on it, it looks really grubby. I feel like you'd be cleaning the wheel constantly to make it look presentable
It would be cool to see you get the rest of the nismo parts required to make the nismo buttons work. This way you can showcase more of the differences and help people acheive a more upgraded car
I got a question regarding about your nismo wheel with the cruise control buttons that didnt fit, had you considered making a cut section into the wheel where you could fit the cruise control buttons? Would the cutting have interferred with the other wiring behind on the nismo wheel?

I do not. The easiest way I found to get some was buy some on eBay

The airbag will not deploy with the car parked and the key out of the ignition, because the airbag computer has no power to transmit to the airbag; and it also needs a signal from an inertial sensor that tells the computer the car is in an accident. The probability of both the ignition switch and the inertial sensor/sensors going bad at the same time is extremely unlikely. And if that happens, the airbag will deploy anyways, even if you don't mess with the connectors. And most likely even if you were to take out the connectors with the ignition switched on the only thing that would happen is an error stored on the airbag module. If it were that risky to take out an airbag it would certainly require some special tools to take it out that would be available only to dealerships. The airbag system is one of those systems who needs a lot of safety approvals before goes into a production car. That is why it uses special connectors, designed not to tear apart even in a very big accident.
Noted!! I am still uneasy when working with them, and I don't know if I'll ever get over that fear. I've had air bags deploy on me in a car along with blowing them up outside of the car. It doesn't look to be comfortable to get hit by one
If you had airbags deploy on you, I totally understand the fear you have (I'm glad I didn't have such experiences). It's certainly better to be safe than sorry in such situations.
I don't think the Nismo wheel looks that much better than stock, especially for the price. Maybe something like a Momo wheel made for the Z would be a worthwhile upgrade.

The bumps are there for comfort and ergonomics. Some of us love holding the wheel at 4 and 8 especially on very long drives.

Why not just buy a 370z nismo? If in fact your going to "nismo" it up? Would have been nice to see a nismo 370z be upgraded in a different personal way. Either way nice video like always!!!
The price of Nismo's were about $12-15k more than the Touring Sport, which I think is SOOOO not worth the money..
I know im really late on this but you can order the nismo airbag with the nismo controls and replace the air bag of the touring one to the nismo so you can get the black buttons
Can't you take out the silver panels and paint them as well? Just seems like the cheaper choice to me
I actually like the regular silver buttons you have rather than the nismo black ones. Theres already silver inside the car and it accents it really nicely
Got dang you got the alcantera wheel for $300? Hoooooooo- and I thought I got lucky finding one for $540. The dealership I went to asked $1240 for one. *throws up* But I gotta get one of these wheels soon prolly that $540 brand new one
To remove the remaining electricity that there's in a car, just use the same tip that we use in IT, just try to start it, with the power disconnected.
i don't know if you said you did this or not, but you should brush the suede after it drys to soften it back up. and if you want to go the extra mile you could get some mink oil to really make it buttery smooth. a little trick I've learned over the years of cleaning suede shoes!
I'll give it a shot!! After I cleaned the suede, I used compressed air to let the fibres lift back up again which made a big difference. I'll give the mink oil a shot :)
I think I’m going to upgrade my stock leather black wheel with an Oem Saab 9-3 Aero Wheel since my car started out as the base model 2003 car I’ve been sourcing aero parts one by one to make it the top of the line model including engine swap

I did not know what a "security 30mm torx driver" was....it has a hole in it to work with the bolt. Drove me nuts until I figured it out.

That bulge in the bottom right corner is in pretty much every current Nissan, however most of them you can feel on the back of the steering wheel and not the side.

Thing is.... when you drive like an “asshole” you’re supposed to keep your hands at 9 and 3 so u can always locate where straight forwards is and just have better control of the car

Why don’t you modify the plastic piece and cut a hole for the Nismo buttons so you can install it and use it ? You only have one side you could do, the other side has the hole already. Or look for the whole plastic piece from Nismo with both buttons holes. What do you think?
Procedure for reconnecting a battery after touching an airbag is to put ignition on, THEN install the negative terminal on the battery (that means you are NOT in the vehicle)
Except when you are in a car with a push-button ignition, which the 370z has.
If you really wanted the black nismo buttons, couldn't you just buy the nismo airbag assembly?

yeah i know that, and i get that the airbag assembly is probably pretty exspensive. It was more ment to any other peeps who were looking to get one.

What if you make the hole with a dremel or something for the cruise control buttons?
I contemplated it but if I messed up, I wouldn't be able to get another one since it is sold with the airbag. $1000 mistake if I mess up

Than I wouldn't ever be able to engage cruise control, but I'd have the other buttons for it which would become useless

So I took apart my 350z wheel to repaint it a couple times, but the last time in installed it, the airbag light started blinking. I re-disconnected all the wires and put them back in but it wont go away. This didnt happen the first 2 times i took it apart. Any reason why this is happening?
Did you disconnect the battery before you did this? You might have gotten a stored SRS code.
milanmastracci the first thing I did was disconnect it. I did it every time I removed my wheel. It was fine the first 2 times I removed it and the 3rd time when I put it back together I triple checked that everything was connected properly and it still threw the light
I thought that the airbag would not deploy unless the seatbelt was locked
Even if that is the case, I'd rather be safe than sorry and not have it blow in my face

I didn’t realize the Nismo had all those differences. Especially the Nismo air bag.
The Nismo is quite different than the regular 370Z's. After having a friend gut his interior, you can see more difference as well

I like your channel but come on, really? The Nismo front and rear bumper looks sick, the wing looks sick, maybe the seats do too but you go with the steering wheel that is the exact same steering wheel but with a red stripe? I'd love to sell you some Nismo snake oil.
You should try to get the nismo airbag to use those controls everything is the same connections everything and it should work all the same

There is thread locker holding them in so it will be tough the first time around loosing those bolts. Turn harder lol that's all I can tell ya lol
