Shinken hakkyoken means Eight Mirror Sword. Remember how Lille was defeated by senjumaru bankai? Eight mirror reflecting his attacks back to him. Just like pernida was devoured by a black soil, that can also be called kurotsuchi.

There's a theory that Nanao's zanpakuto was used to cut the Soul King when the worlds split apart, thus the curse in the Ise family for cutting him and why they described it as being able to harm the gods

I may be in the minority here but I absolutely love Lille's design. It's so grotesque and terrifying, and his godlike destructiveness make him such a fearful villain.
honestly by far the best design in bleach. So disappointing that he didn't get more time. Kubo should've made it so that Barro was the main villain of this mini Wahrwelt arc before Yhwach serves as the ultimate boss.

It's been rumored that the Ise family is responsible for cutting the soul king and consequentially was cursed. I don't believe Kubo has ever confirmed or denied this.
@@kalelson8861 It was the Five Great Noble Families, led by the Tsunayashiro clan, that were responsible for the mutilation. While the fifth clan has never been named I think if the Ise family were it then Kubo would have said so.
This part is controversial, but yeah, they managed to make Chicken Lille creepier, the lights and musics were at top, and then Shunsui's backstory 💜 There was a little foreshadowing during Senjumaru's bankai (Lille trapped in a fabric with 8 reflecting mirrors, which is somehow how it translates Nanao's sword), but another one is again back during the Zanpakuto Rebellion filler arc, there was an episode Nanao tried to make friend with Kyokotsu 👀
Watching this I'm reminded of the first time we see Shunsui in action against Chad. When he introduced himself and Nanao was tossing Sakura petals down on him before dumping out the whole thing😂 good times.
I find it sad how Nanao's mother assures Shunsui that keeping the sword will not bring him any misfortune, considering that while he had it hidden, every important person to him (except Nanao) died.
Yes she is the daughter of his sister in law. Yet if you really think about it that is his niece. If his sister in law was pregnant and the only guy she was with was his brother then that means Nanao is his niece. He even knew about the baby. Just like her mother she wear glasses but has the hair color more like her dad's hair color. She even has the skills to be a soul reaper. You can even tell that when he becomes a captain that he takes Nanao into his division.
Also Shunsui was told that he wouldn't run into the curse by hiding the sword anymore but that wasn't the case. He lost his mentor or father figure in Yamamoto, colleague in Unohana and a friend in Ukitake.
Fun fact, the Zanpakuto Rebellion filler arc debuted the designs of Katen Kyokotsu's spirits far in advance of even TYBW's original run in the manga. While a lot of the details in that filler were later rendered inaccurate (it didn't even have Tensa Zangetsu/Young Yhwach), one detail that proved interesting foreshadowing was that in the arc's denouement, the Kyokotsu Spirit hung around Nanao much more than Shunsui, and then we later learn that she was the holder of Nanao's Zanpakuto all along. I dunno if that was among the details Kubo chose to share with the anime production at the time, or simply a lucky coincidence, but it's interesting either way.
All of the Zanpakuto spirits in that filler arc were designed by Kubo, and until the actual story reveals a different spirit for the swords it's safe to assume that's what they actually look like for all of them. Hell, the entire arc itself was something Kubo has said he wanted as a canon arc but couldn't figure out a good place to fit it into the story.
