Back in "76 I bought a Ruger No.1 in 7mm Rem Mag and it shot pretty well, but I traded it for a Model 70 in 220 Swift which shot better. Muzzle blast was about the same. Yes, we all sold guns to much regret in those days. Nice video!
I just bought a 220 swift yesterday. It’s a ruger m77 with bull barrel. Haven’t had a chance to shoot it can’t find ammo so I ordered some. I can’t wait
I’ve owned a Ruger M77 HB in 220 swift since the 1990s. While I no longer shoot it like I used too, the barrel has yet to be “shot out”. I think based on only the one I own that you will be happy with it and it will give you years of service.
I hope your m77 is as accurate and awesome as both of mine were. Regretted every time I think about them. I had . 223 bull barrel and a 300 win mag the 300 very well then I put it in a rather inexpensive aluminum bedded hunting stock. With hand loads people thought I was stretching the truth about groups at 400yards lasered . Until hunting season site in😅😅
@@jeffwilson1217 You'll love reloading for it. I shoot it from a 700 Rem with 26" medium heavy barrel. With 45 grainers I push 4300 FPS. But, as with all the small super fast rounds, they eat barrel throats in short order. I have less than 750 rounds and the throat is already bad.
It’s great to see these results. I have 3 fields that need groundhog control. One requires 150 yard coverage (I use a ridiculously accurate Ruger M77 in .223 for that). One spans around 300 yards at its longest and another spans over 25 acres. I use a Remington 700 in .22-250 for the longest shots but it’s good to know that it can maintain energy at a distance.
Sadly, 22-250 velocities die off really quickly. Past about 500 yards, you'll need to step up to slower (muzzle) velocities, but much higher BC bullets to retain higher velocities at long distances.
I’m gonna be honest, my buddy and I go to a specific gun range that allows us to hang these plates I was able to make it last like 60 trips. We have shot at 100 yards with anything from 22LR up to 8mm Mauser and occasionally some .50 Beowulf. We did move to 50 yards and that’s when it started dimpling with my 270 and some 556 rounds. I’d recommend if you want it to last keep it at 100 yards
Well I don’t know what happened but I tried to post and it didn’t go through but crap I thought this was great to put it mildly. Anyway love to see more either big boy calibers that have speed also . Thanks Adam
If you have a 243 try it, because I've had to adjust hand loads for it several times due to overpenetration on deer. (It is impressive having it go straight through both front shoulders at over 400 yards on a whitetail deer, but having to drag it out of blackberry, and thorn tree thorny hell valley several hundred yards from where you shot it is far from fun!) I don't have anywhere to shoot plates considering the nearest range to me isn't set up in a way I'd risk shooting plate due to lack of decent mounds of dirt between shooting lanes. (outdoor)

Did it with Winchester Super X .223 55 gr soft points. Granted it was only the 1/4 inch plate but still had 4 out of 10 get through. Was out of Springfield Saint Victor .556 and only 50 yards (not chronoed and only range I had at the time ).
I had a 22-250 70 grain hollow point went through a 1/2" steel plate, well the bullet did not get through, instead it vaporized on the surface imparting extra inertia into the plate punching a 1/2" diameter steel plug through a brick , 2 by 4 and broke a second brick. it took a 3/4 " thick plate to stop the energy however the plate had a 3/4 inch deep hole on the front and a 1/4 in bump on the back, there was a 1/4 in high crater rim on the front. So now that 3/4" plate measured 1 1/4" from front to back at the impact site.
Excellent video...as always! Since you posted your 'We tried Everything ' video with regards to the 3/4" AR500 plate tests. I decided to see what a 30" barreled .300 Ultra Magnum would do versus the same plate that you tested in that video. I had 8 out of 21 pass through with one that daylighted the plate but did not pass through. Several of the rounds that were complete penetrations...had enough remaining energy to have significant behind armor effects...in one case blowing a half inch wide crater off the backside of the plate and then completely penetrating a 4" thick pressure treated pine projectile capture block and both sides of a concrete block behind that! Most of my testing with the largest case capacity chamberings (> with the Smk-H's, for example) were done in the late 80's to early 90's. Bullet construction and jacketing are critical. Also their brass is made by hornady and everyone knows how hornady primmer pockets get under magnums. So maybe 3-4 loading till your brass can’t hold a primmer.
Awesome video !!! I think the bullet construction would help with the steel penetration. What distance were you shooting at . I have a 22-250 and they are a beast ! And some say that the 22-250 is too flangable … that one didn’t explode on impact 🤨 It’s the velocity. Hand load that Weatherby and a different bullet and that may do it too . GREAT VIDEO !,, Thanks Who Tee
The Walmart plates are great cheap plates. At 100yds they are 5.56 safe. Just about anything under that and you start doing actual damage. They will hold up to almost all pistol ammo all day. For the money though, great steel targets.
I think Hornady makes a 35 grain vmax bullet you could hand load in your 220 swift if you wanted to. You should be able to get well over 4000 fps then.
The 22-250 will go thru it if you shoot it closer the recommended. 3/8 inch is 100 yard minimum distance for rifles. Had a knucklehead young man shoot mine at 25 yards and it burned a hole. .223 at 50 yards will dings it . The 204 and the 220 swift probably will at less then 100 yards or more precisely at pistol ranges 50 or less.
I buy all my AR500 steel from Shooting Targets 7 in Michigan Also US Army did a test in WWII and 30 06 with armor piercing round didn't go through armored 1/2 track but 220 Swift did
Juat found this video, and someone who has shot .220 for years. It with a 55gr barnes solid copper does NASTY things. Also the old facory load .220 ammo was running anywhere from 4000-4200fps
Copper is not as dense as lead. They use depleted Uranium for tank busting because uranium is much denser than steel and it can pierce through armour plate much easier. If the Weatherby had a lead core, it would have gone through.
I checked, it's similar to the corner iron we found one day at the gun range some guy left behind, I was curious about the power of the 8mm mauser and at the time we only had the military rounds for it, drilled a hole right through it. If any of those are shooting the same speeds of a 8mm mauser, it should in theory punch through.
good to see some Walmarts still support the 2A community. In my area they don't carry anything firearm related. There was a woman in a relationship with a woman that worked at Walmart. They had an abusive relationship and she went to Walmart, bought bullets, went to her car and loaded the gun and went back and shot the girlfriend that worked there. No firearm accessory has been sold since then.
220 swift is an amazing round. Had one years ago in a Ruger No 1b. Had to sell it to pay bills. Still have bills, but not the rifle. Regret it every day.
You just have to send it fast enough and heavy enough . They still use shallow copper cones in certain anti-tank devices . Typically it's set over H.E. as a shape charge , and the cone collapses into a molten jet going 5000-6000 fps . It cuts through everything .
Yeah, you can see that tipped barnes copper he sent in 6.5x300 wby came apart by design. Leigh XD solid coppers poke holes in handgun calibers in everything.
A man and his father I worked with about 1990 were shooting hot .280 hand loads with solid copper bullets they made. I have no idea what they would have done on hardened plates but they shot clear through 3/4” Mild steel plate.
I work at a rock quarry, we use all sorts of AR metal. If it’s not thicker than 1/2 inch none of it is very good. Even harddox steel isn’t that good if it’s 1/4 or 3/8.
Could you please shoot the 220 Swift and the 22-250 at the top half of your target to confirm there isn't a difference in metal hardness or thickness from the top half to bottom half? That plate looks like it was cast, so there could be big differences in the metal pour.
How far away from the steel were you? Most AR500 steel manufacturers state that you should be at least 100 yards away when shooting rifles. Cool video, thanks for all the great content.

Juat found this video, and someone who has shot .220 for years. It with a 55gr barnes solid copper does NASTY things. Also the old facory load .220 ammo was running anywhere from 4000-4200fps
Try an 8mm Mauser with Sierra 175 loaded to modern pressures.... Daylight
The Weather by might
Copper is not as dense as lead. They use depleted Uranium for tank busting because uranium is much denser than steel and it can pierce through armour plate much easier. If the Weatherby had a lead core, it would have gone through.
I'd like to see a 55 grain 243 give it a try.
Great Slingin' Who-T-Who! :)
I'm going with the 220 swift, the 204 ruger and the 6.5-300!
Missed this one live but now i seent it. Ive poked some holes in those target plates before...
Thanks for watching
Great video bring out that 264 win mag
Interesting video ❤
Thanks for watching
good to see some Walmarts still support the 2A community.
A good penetration test could be done with different thicknesses of mild steel also. Probably be quite a bit cheaper also. Good video WTW😊
If you can find any independence xm193 from 2012-2015 it goes 3250 from a 16 and 3400 from a 20 inch barrel
That was a fun video, thanks WTW!
Appreciate ya watching
should do one with 6.5's.. already have a 6.5-300 so now 6.5 prc, 6.5 creedmore, 6.5-55 swede, and 6.5 grendle... just to see the difference...
The 22-250 was 300-400 fps slower than I expected at that weight.
Think the can affected it
Just by looking at the steel it got soft and started crumbling....BOSS EFFECT!!
220 swift is an amazing round. Had one years ago in a Ruger No 1b. Had to sell it to pay bills. Still have bills, but not the rifle. Regret it every day.
Copper penetrates everything well except steel.
I have no idea what they would have done on hardened plates but they shot clear through 3/4”
Mild steel plate.
I work at a rock quarry, we use all sorts of AR metal. If it’s not thicker than 1/2 inch none of it is very good. Even harddox steel isn’t that good if it’s 1/4 or 3/8.
I’m gonna have to get me a fast 22 cal. Thinking about a 22 Creedmore. Probably gonna check out the Fierce Carbon Rival.
I'm gonna get a 22arc
I ordered a 22 Creedmore today, and some ammo. Got the Fierce Carbon Cx Rival. Couldn’t find a 220 swift. lol.
220 swift with something like m855 as the projectile would be sweet
Could you please shoot the 220 Swift and the 22-250 at the top half of your target to confirm there isn't a difference in metal hardness or thickness from the top half to bottom half? That plate looks like it was cast, so there could be big differences in the metal pour.
This…
No
AR500 is rolled plate, and should not have any such variation that you describe.
My 6.5-300 loves the 127 gr. Barnes.
the err2 and err3 mean the front or rear sensor didnt read so make sure your straight on over the 1" sensors
👍👍
My 22 250 with Winchester 55g in the black box 1/2 inch . Put a hole clean 3/4 inch made a big dent .
For some reason copper doesn't go thru steel as good as lead bullets at least that has been our observation at our range so far
Using 55 or 58 grain 243 should go through due to fps
Yup
How far away from the steel were you? Most AR500 steel manufacturers state that you should be at least 100 yards away when shooting rifles. Cool video, thanks for all the great content.
Small caliber, high speed defeats armor. You proved that in this scientific experiment!
Ballistic tip and soft points don’t go through as they are made to deform and disintegrate upon impact
The soft points in this video went through
Speed is good more is better!!!

Maybe you could find someone with a hardness tester to find out if that plate is actually hardened to 500 brinell. It seems soft.
I have the same chrono, i love when i get a "error" in the middle of load development
