Hey Fern. The rule of watering when the plant is in a clay pot is: "Water the plant - Water the pot". So basically water twice as much when using clay pots. That's an old old saying. Love your videos. 💚🌹🌿
For the string of hearts you can try the butterfly method and plug them back in the soil and give it the “poor man greenhouse with a ziplock bag” that always works for me😁
When cutting in between hoya nodes, you could cut closer to the top of the node you’re leaving on the mother plant. Bc whatever you leave on the mother plant above the node will dry up anyway. Plus longer space below the node cutting anchors the cutting in place better, provides more space for roots as well as gives you more plant material in case you have to chop off some due to potential stem rot 😉
Hi, for your SoH's in the sphag moss just put a lid on it that's what I do. I reuse plastic take out containers with the sealed lids it works beautifully. That way you don't have to be to concerned about forgetting to water it, it is its own little green house.
@@wildfern Yes, I think it maybe their moss is too wet. I soak mine in warm water and wring it so no water drips, put the top on and let it cool, take the top off and set my cuttings lightly on top the moss and put the top back on. Put it somewhere you can keep an eye on it but once you get it down you can forget them and they will be fine, at least in my experience. If it does get too dry I use my little squirt bottle ( I have one like yours, so handy 🙂) or spray bottle and squirt or spray a touch around the sides. I know I said a lot but I hope it helps😊
I stuck my variegated string of hearts into water and they gave me amazing Roots within a month!! You will be so happy you did water propagation instead of just waiting for it in soil
Little tip for the variegated SOH butterfly propagation methode : Keep the top of the soil moist constantly until you see them grow. I find it easier to go around and spray them with water every second day.
I've had the best luck propagating String of heart's by butterfly cutting's. Put them in soil and then in a baggy it's worked everytime. I water mine a little more often too.
Hey Fern, for the string of hearts you should try your perlite prop box, that works amazingly for me! I just plop little leaf pair cuttings into perlite, press them down a little, and forget about them. Within a week I get new vine growth. Maybe that works for you too. :) Great video, btw!
I would definitely pot your exotica in plastic. I had the same issue with mine. I decided to move it to plastic and now it’s always shooting beautiful new growth and the old leaves look so much better. I don’t think they do amazing in terracota 🥰
Hi Fern- for the string of hearts prop method in soil- just mist the top of the soil thoroughly and then put it in a big freezer bag and put it near bright light. They will grow new tiny vines like crazy that way (it literally took me 30 days to fully prop one like that)
I have my linearis in a woven basket. Looks very bohemian! I am currently propping Hoya rotundiflora in my terrarium in spaghnum moss. And Hoya vaccinoides in water. I also have an syngonium Albo cutting because it was losing it's old leaves and I was worried it would look a bit scraggly. I want a huuuuuge syngonium Albo with like 20 plants in one pot so I get to see many leaves emerge at once:)
Oooh I'd love to have my linearis in a pretty basket like that one day :) And totally agree, a huge Syngonium albo would be so beautiful. Thanks for watching! x
Not me listening along on my phone while I make breakfast and then immediately replaying it to watch it on my TV as I eat 😏😘 I have had success with wrapping on top of soil with regular SoH but I've not had the opportunity to try with a variegated one. I've found it works best to not pin it and to use little bits of moss or soil to cover the bulbils a bit but honestly water works! And it's pretty 😍😍
If you put a bag on top of the variegated string of hearts pot it will help with new growth. That’s what I did with mine and they did well. Also if you put them in the moss try a container with a lid. Mine only took about 2 weeks !
@@zoet1564 nope I just left mine shut with no holes. If you notice too much condensation you can take the lid off for a couple hours and put it back on.
I love your description of the Hoya walliniana leaves as being thin like crackers or chips :D definitely one of the coolest Hoyas I've seen! Also the Hoya Mathilde is adorable :)
Every time you show your silver splash my heart leaps with envy, such a gorgeous plant. Also I'm not into Hoyas but that linearis is making me think otherwise!
With the variegated string of hearts that you did the Bobby pin method on you should try to put the pot in a clear baggie and mist them every few days when they fry out I find they root super easily in high humidity!
I just got a linearis. Very interesting the color difference… and I’m glad you told me they are thirsty. I’ve been treating it like my other Hoyas in letting it dry before watering.
The bobby pin never worked for me neither, but with the butterfly method in sphag, it takes a lot of time to get new shoots .... Harly G made it so simple, she had like a full pot by one month .. #iwish
I just thought about it, you could have did a voice over!!! Love the video, you got some awesome cuttings. Never seen anyone use a medicine bottle, that was genius!!! I look forward to seeing more propagation videos.
I just got a Walliniana cutting in the mail today but it looks quite different, only green, kind of bowl shaped leaves 🤔 but it has a different letter/number combination so that might be it… hoping the leaves might get a bit purple though 😊
Hi Fern, you inspired me to make some perlite prop boxes, do you ever have to re-wet the perlite? If so how often? Do you have to take out all the plants to do it? Could you do a keeping up with perlite prop boxes to go over spraying with water or adding water to them☺️
Hey! Yes, I do re-wet it. Not very often though, only when it loses all condensation. I just pour water into it so there is a shallow layer on the bottom of the box. I don't remove the plants, they should be fine. And yes I can make a "how to maintain prop boxes" video soon!! Good luck :)
I've put string of heart butterflies in my perlite prop box and they have taken! Maybe something to consider, as you have such good success with perlite overall
I've noticed damn near all philodendrons smell like pine or something lol . I've been on a prop spree lately and that's a huge step for me as it use to give me bad anxiety chopping any of my plants.
I never have tried prop boxes not sure how todo the perlite in it i either pop end in soil or mostly water. I have put dirt over lightly bald vines to get them to root and sprout out new limbs
You must put your string of heart variegated in a prop box or put plastic on your pot,it'll root in 1 month around. And no pins needed at least with sphagnum Moss 😉
Hi Fern! Love your videos! A while ago in another of your videos, I recall you mentioning getting pests (little mites of some kind if I remember correctly) in one of your prop boxes. This actually happened to me recently. I don't see a lot of info online about it at all. Wondering if you ever figured out what those were and how to prevent them. Thanks!
Hey!! Yes, I did treat them with neem oil and they went away, but I honestly don't think they were spider mites. They didn't appear to be harmful, but I treated just in case. My theory is that they came with the moss I put into the prop box. It was cheap moss & I won't be buying it again. That's the only time I've had this problem. Good luck!
So weird about your SOH props! I always have success with the butterfly method in moist soil in a tupperware container that I put inside a plastic bag and set in the sill of a south window. I'm gonna have to try the water method next time tho. How long do they take to root that way? The soil props I do take 2 to 4 weeks.
Hiii Fern! I have a syngonium macrophyllum in water and the stick is rotting, will the plant be ok if I put in sphagnum? Shud I cut it off before transferring? Helpppp
They really do. Also Scindapsus pictus! I can’t believe my single-leaf cutting of my S. pictus ‘exotica’ rooted in only 3 weeks. I still have to figure out why the unfurled leaf on the 2-leaf cutting actually didn’t unfurl, but I’m happy with it.
Just got an import from Indonesia, all the plants were rotted, and the philodendron gloriosum was completely rotted throughout the stem so I can't even try to save it
I've tried string of hearts in water soooo many times and they always rot for me :((( I've tried reg tap water, rain water, superthrive, h202 mix!!! The only method thats worked for me is in a prop box! Envious of everyone who can prop them in water!!!!
If you posted the potting vid with no audio and just background music I would love to see it!
Agreed!
Yessss good idea !!! Can put up some captions even 🥰
I love this idea!!
I third the motion!
yeeees, you can do voiceover or music or sth!
fern: "these sheers aren't very sharp"
also fern: *almost has her toes taken off by said sheers*
I know right hahah I was cracking up at that while editing

I have a few ziplock bags going … I honestly like it better
I’ve been DYING for some plants content. Thank you fern. You’re always entertaining and just gimme a happy feeling when I watch you
I aim to please 😌 haha enjoy & thanks for watching! x
I cut my VSOH into individual nodes then put them in perlite prop box. They root and put out growth so fast!
Oh right now I'm propagating, a prayer plant an Brazil and a string of hearts, always fun to make more plants
Yes it is!! Hope they root well ☺️
Perfect timing. Needed something to watch while I have my coffee! 💚
Amazing! Enjoy your ☕️
Thank you for calming my anxiety
❤️❤️❤️

I may have to do it this way! I've heard some people say that theirs rotted like this, so I avoided it, but I think I will chance it next time.

Your hair is fading so nicely!! Also this was great timing! I get to watch this while I water!
Put your SOH in spag moss in a container with the lid on then you rarely have to wet it, mine are doing great! ❤️
I would definitely pot your exotica in plastic. I had the same issue with mine. I decided to move it to plastic and now it’s always shooting beautiful new growth and the old leaves look so much better. I don’t think they do amazing in terracota 🥰
Your Hoya wayetii looks so perfect I thought it was fake for a second.
Haha, I just lost it when your scissors landed like that on the floor because I know it's something that would happen to me too 🤣🤣🤣
Hahah omg right!! That was crazy
The snipping is like ASMR 😂 so satisfying
I propped SOH in soil with great success! Just cut them at each node, place on damp soil and stick in a clear container. Roots and new growth :)
Hi Fern- for the string of hearts prop method in soil- just mist the top of the soil thoroughly and then put it in a big freezer bag and put it near bright light. They will grow new tiny vines like crazy that way (it literally took me 30 days to fully prop one like that)
Oh cool! Thanks for the tip :)
I second this Fern, I currently have a few baby vines growing from my vsoh doing this method in soil. :)
I have my linearis in a woven basket. Looks very bohemian!

@@zoet1564 nope I just left mine shut with no holes. If you notice too much condensation you can take the lid off for a couple hours and put it back on.
I have a hard time with music with talking, too. Not sure why...I absolutely enjoy your videos but have to bow out on these. 💖
I love your description of the Hoya walliniana leaves as being thin like crackers or chips :D definitely one of the coolest Hoyas I've seen! Also the Hoya Mathilde is adorable :)
Love your videos! Waiting for the update of those plants you propagate!! 😊🥰
Thank you!
still soooooooo SOO thankful for your first perlite video 🥳🥳🥳 LIFE CHANGING! love all your videos but especially prop/ progress videos 🖤
Every time you show your silver splash my heart leaps with envy, such a gorgeous plant. Also I'm not into Hoyas but that linearis is making me think otherwise!

So fun and calming. I love propagation videos!
I got myself the Hoya Walliniana ut 152 when I saw you unbox yours. It's one of my favorites, it lived in my cabinet, it's so pretty!! 💚
I just got a linearis. Very interesting the color difference… and I’m glad you told me they are thirsty. I’ve been treating it like my other Hoyas in letting it dry before watering.
Water propagation is the only thing that works for me for string of hearts too!
Excellent timing!!!!! Watching while I go through my prop boxes/ clean up/ care for bbs
Yay enjoy!! 🪴
I like chop and prop vids!
Me too! Was so happy to do this one ☺️
Love this video. You give me confidence to prop away.
Can't wait for an update video

I was thinking about it but yaaaaa idk maybe I will look at the footage again & see
this made me wanna chop up all my plants haha! nice video. thanks for sharing:)
I just got a Walliniana cutting in the mail today but it looks quite different, only green, kind of bowl shaped leaves 🤔 but it has a different letter/number combination so that might be it… hoping the leaves might get a bit purple though 😊
Humidity is great for getting your VSOH to root soon! I've used spag moss, but I wanna try soil! 😊

I had fun watching this video! Also just want to say my 1 and 5 year old girls always enjoy the music you have playing 🎶
Your eyelashes look so good … just chopped my krimson queen recently to make fuller … she is still one of my favorites
I continuously try to pin my variegated SOH as well and it has never rooted back in.
I know everyone else has already mentioned, but the butterfly method is awesome. Maybe it would work better for you in perlite!
I've put string of heart butterflies in my perlite prop box and they have taken! Maybe something to consider, as you have such good success with perlite overall
For string of hearts I did the butterfly method and it worked very well! I'm still watching but thought I'd share!
Just did my Exotica, SOH and Neon Potho, all in perlite, Neon has rotted when I did the water method so hoping the perlite is the way to go.
I hope it is successful!! 🤞
Where did you purchase your spray bottle ?? I love it.. 😁
Your nails look great! I like the background music. Be careful in that sweltering heat! Love your knowledgeable videos.
I really love Your vidios ❤️❤️❤️🥰🥰🥰
Thank you!! 💗
I thumbs up 👍before even watching🥰always pleased to see one of your new videos!
jus wanted to say your hair looks so good(: ur my fav plantuber! hope u have a great day fern

I never have tried prop boxes not sure how todo the perlite in it i either pop end in soil or mostly water. I have put dirt over lightly bald vines to get them to root and sprout out new limbs
I've not had any luck w the bobby pin method w my VSOH. It works w my string of dolphins. But never w vsoh
this was so soothing lol now I want to see what I have to propagate
You must put your string of heart variegated in a prop box or put plastic on your pot,it'll root in 1 month around. And no pins needed at least with sphagnum Moss 😉
Okay thank you!!
If you have any more Mathilde cuts lmk! I've been trying to find them but sellers have them so over priced atm 😩
Have you tried propagating SOH in perlite? That works the best for me

I just adopted a hoya engleriana and can't find any real care tips. How do you care for her if you don't mind sharing.

Do you have any caretips for hoya mathilde? Yours looks amazing! Mine hasnt done anything for me since I have it :(
Can I ask where you got your trimming scissors from?
I like the color of your hair . what's the stuff in your prop boxes
The white stuff? It’s perlite.
That was relaxing and enjoyable.
Awesome video be blessed keep growing
how often do you change the perlite in your box?

Girlll what was that spray bottle ??!! It looked really high tech😳 anyway loved this video and cant wajt for the updates !!!
