Animated Disney sequels seem like they're getting out of hand! Is it possible that Disney has always relied on sequels or is this a recent shift? In this video we are going to dive into Disney's output from the 90's all the way to the 2010's to determine if something has changed in regards to animated sequels at the Walt Disney company or if we're just blinded by nostalgia.

Short answer. Its kinda youre guys fault.
Not only did the original Disney and Pixar movied did poorly critically, and box office wise, its also from other studios.
Last year we got Elemental, Wish, Ruby Gillman and Migration and all of them did poorly while the remakes and sequels and game adaptations made decent or alot of money. No we won't only get sequels we got 9 original movies this decade and were still getting original movies like Elio, Ducks, Hoppers and this upcoming Indian princess film
Also what about DreamWorks? What about Sony? What about Illumination? What about Nickelodeon?
Its a Hollywood problem. Were only getting sequels and Remakes because they get the most money

I see what you’re saying and while I do agree with a lot of your points I’d argue that a big reason a lot of Disney and Pixar’s original films aren’t doing well is due to poor marketing and a general decline in quality (wish, strange world, etc.) You can’t really blame general audiences for not turning up to those.

    • @JeremyMasterson938
      @JeremyMasterson938 24 дні тому +3

I was just gonna say something like that as well. It’s insane that everyone thinks that it’s okay for other studios to do sequels, but clearly they also make them for money too. That’s why Kung Fu Panda 4 is so mid. That’s why Megamind 2 was made into a 💩 show just made for streaming views on peacock which is also considered as a cash grab. And that’s why DreamWorks is making a Shrek 5 and same goes to Illumination for making Minions 3. People seriously need to stop being so biased towards them just because they’re not Disney or Pixar, but they’re also part of Hollywood. There is a reason why DreamWorks is working on the live action remake of How To Train Your Dragon,……Money.

Regarding the question posed under the video....I would say that it depends on the individual work.
Moana 2 and Zootopia 2 have a lot of potential, if well exploited: the Polynesian mythology and the surrounding areas can give a lot in terms of settings and new characters (I'm thinking, perhaps, of a sort of demi-god enemy of Maui); Zootopia...well, it still remains to be seen whether they will be able to exploit the setting given by the anthropomorphized animals, and in this case they could set everything in a city where amphibians, reptiles and birds live, calling Nick and Judy as consultants to solve a similar case to that of the first film...obviously, you also need a valid idea behind it.
Regarding The Incredibles 3, a time leap is absolutely necessary: focus the story on the kids and invent a villain who questions the supers, even in their very way of acting (something like Megamind's Titan).

We were supposed to get one! Look up The Search Of Mickey Mouse. It was supposed to come out in 2002.
The plot: In honor of Mickey Mouse's 75th anniversary, the project was about Mickey who gets "mousenapped" by unknown forces, forcing Minnie Mouse to enlist Basil of Baker Street to investigate his disappearance, and later encounters one character from Disney's animated film canon such as Alice, Peter Pan, Robin Hood, and Aladdin.
However, the project suffered script problems with the multiple cameos being thought to be too gimmicky. The project was later replaced by Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers. So yeah. We could have gotten a fully animated Mickey Mouse movie.

Look, I know everyone's disappointed that there aren't that many original films in the upcoming lineup, I am too, but can we at least give this sequel Era a chance before we judge it?
I mean look at Inside Out 2 for example, that was a fantastic sequel, and honestly, all the upcoming sequels (minus Toy Story 5) all look and sound promising. Even Frozen 3 if that one concept art they showed is anything to go by.
Personally, while yes I am disappointed and letdown there aren't enough original films, I'm more then willing to give this Sequel Era a chance....except for Toy Story 5, everything about that just sounds stupid.
And if this doesn't turn out well or as planned. Well.....there's always more adventures from that big green ogre from the guys and gals across the street.

Bambi having sequel or midquel isn't that strange actually. The book has a sequel where it continue with Bambi's twin fawns. The original had an enormous jumpcut after Bambi's mother dies where he's suddenly an adult seemingly forgetting what just happened with his mother so the midquel had the opportunity to explain what happened between that time extending the relationship with his stern father and coping with his grief. Although I don't really like the beautiful orchestra being replaced with modern generic pop amongst other modern references and visuals which makes it feels so aesthetically disconnected from the original.

To defend the Aladdin sequels, they were never called Aladdin 2 or 3, they never felt like they were put on the same pedestal as the theatrical movie in that regard. But then Disney started numbering all their DTV follow ons, even the ones that were similarly just disguised pilots. Even ones that WEREN'T really sequels and had a production name to befit that (eg. Bambi II, which was originally Bambi and the Great Prince). It's a small detail but I think it makes all the difference in how these things are being presented. I don't think companion piece material for the Disney IPs is a bad idea on paper, look at Winnie the Pooh for example, that did a terrific job with it, but trying to play off every quick buck project as a TRUE return felt like cheapening the legacy of the original.
I think even in that era you could tell which ones had more time and budget put into them, some of them were legit decent or even GOOD, eg. Cinderella III, Bambi II, most of the Pooh movies. It definitely felt like something they should have emphasised quality over quantity with.

It's sad cause I loved Disney & it's 2D Animation growing up in the 90's. Now it's unrecognizable & it's monopolized many things. These current people have shown how out of touch they are. A lot of them seem to only be capable of writing narcissistic stories that self insert themselves and their own beliefs into anything they do. Even if they get to make something from a pre-existing beloved story, they cannot help themselves. They seem to be incapable of creating artistic creations that stray away from their own personal perspective, instead of showing they can lean heavily into escapism and pure storytelling.. They have proven time and time again that they are not capable of doing anything even remotely close to that.. (which is weird because that should be one of the most important attributes that a director or a developer or an actor has in order to be successful at their job....?)
How is there no one that will fire these people who seem like they openly dislike the fans, who seem to disrespect the consumers that were the ones who made their success in the first place..
There's now people like Kathleen Kennedy, She's a Perfect example of this awful trend where people keep getting these positions when they in no way deserve those positions. They are not hired based off talent or skill..? So we are seeing very expensive shows, movies, all so terribly designed, terribly managed, Awful writing, world design, character development, poor aesthetics. So much now feels creatively bankrupt and I really hope we all snap the heck out of it and get back to making better things.
The new Acolyte show comes off so cheap & tacky.. It's not just the terrible writing & terrible acting. The whole thing is a complete self centered power trip.. It's horrible set design, horrible world building, horrible camera work. It all makes this show feel so small. Like it's filmed in a single green screen room.. Grasping at awful CGI techniques to try and force any bit of a false reality into this mess of a show.
It's so far from Legitimate Star wars movies that it feels as if this whole thing is a big parody.. A very expensive parody..
Now Compare the "The Acolyte" as If you go back & watch "X-Men the Animated series" It was so well crafted. The story of the struggles of mutants having to deal with humanity was such a universally relatable storyline. Media back then was not afraid to face difficult topics head on. They found really unique ways to abstractly teach people life lessons. They touched on difficult situations & found intelligent ways to convey certain stories. Even when I was all grown up & rewatched it, it really felt like the story is crafted so well & executed at such a high level that anyone is capable of relating to it in someway or another. It's stuff like that, that we are deeply lacking nowadays. So much so that literal kid's cartoons from the 90's told deeper and more mature stories than most media nowadays.
Stuff used to take pride in who can find the most creative ways to convey certain things. Who can give the audience certain feelings without overly explaining it.
It used to not matter what kind of character, creature, species they were. What matters is that they found ways to convey artistic depictions of the Human condition. Creative ways that can connect us on a deeper level.

I am fine with Pixar. They prepared 2 sequels, 2 originals, and an original series. That is perfectly fine! 👌.... but, for Disney, yeah, I am not happy with what they are doing, but I can understand why they are doing this. You guys are the ones causing this downfall. They released 3 original films, Raya And The Last Dragon, Encanto, and Wish. Okay, yes, Wish was bad, but Encanto and Raya And The Last Dragon, Disney have been doing well in 2021. Now, for Pixar, it worked with Elemental, but it didn't work with Wish for Disney. Now, Disney looking at how much Inside Out 2 scored, you guys are pushing Disney to make sequels even if you guys don't want them. Why didn't you guys help, Encanto and Raya And The Last Dragon. Yeah, I know, you could not go because of... pandemic, them how come, Sing 2, despite it also being in the pandemic, it was a box-office success. Like how? Just someone explain it to me if I am missing something about what I said. While not making Raya And The Last Dragon and Encanto not succeed, you guys have made Disney fail 3 times and they think that sequels is the best to do. I agree, Wish was bad, but Encanto and Raya And The Last Dragon were not bad at all. Encanto was amazing, and while Raya And The Last Dragon, I was not a fan of it. I totally respect its potential that the audiences can enjoy. Many of you have been trash bombing their recent, recent films. This problem is causing Disney to start making sequels, and now, you guys are mad about that. (Just tell me if I am missing something, but yeah. That is my point)

“The Disney company would be far better off if it focused less on sequels…”. Except that they would burn billions of dollars because it’s not what the public wants.
Disney and Pixar made some great, or at least not bad, non-sequel films recently that were all blasted for not being everything to all people. Soul. Luca. Heck, even Strange World was probably better than half of the Disney Renaissance if it was released in a political vacuum. Elemental was a major tear jerker for anyone who raises kids, especially immigrants. Encanto was spectacular.
Yet these movies didn’t make money. No. People instead went out to see The Lion King remake and Frozen 2 - two pathetic movies that killed the box office.
So why should Disney keep pumping money into experimental new ideas when the audience doesn’t rewards good films? Or even mediocre ones that tried something new, like Turning Red or Raya?
Then Inside Out 2 came out, which really isn’t any better than Encanto or Elemental, and it make $1.7 billion.
It’s the fans that are driving this train. What do you think will make more money - Moana 2 or Elio? Zootopia 2 or Hoppers? Frozen 3 or literally anything?

    • @isaacmurdock
      @isaacmurdock  24 дні тому +1

That’s the thing though, a lot of their original films haven’t been great, so of course people aren’t gonna go see them when word of mouth isn’t positive. Disney’s last original film Wish was one of my least favorite films they’ve ever made, I truly believe it would have made more money if it had been a better film. I agree that the general public does disproportionately reward sequels over original films but to act like Disney isn’t to blame for a lot of their recent original films flopping feels disingenuous to me.

Don't go into something like this without the proper research because there's ALOT you clearly don't know or are intentionally leaving out so people agree with you. Like how Pixar WAS releasing orignal movies since 2019 but the pandemic closed theaters and then Chapek came along kicking them into the dirt repeadetly then when they finally got theatrical release's people were hate mobing them for every little thing. It was'nt until Elemental actually came out that people finally started turning around on them.
Point is their decisions right now are the result of trying to get out of the hole Chapek put them in, and if you all really care about their orignal movies you better start actually showing up for them or just shut up already. Screaming at them about wanting orignal movies only to turn around and bash the first one you see only mixes up the message and makes them less likely to want to hear you. If people go support MUFASA for instance that'll only tell them it's ok to keep making those remakes.
I won't pretend their flawless and if they do something I don't like I'll sure say so, but people hating on them for focusing on sequels are just being hypocrites and unreasonable. Right now Iger needs to do something to make their movies click with people again and this is just the reaility unless you actually support Elio and Hopper. Because THAT'S how you convince them to make more orignal movies too.

@@joshuasebsebe1047 Megamind vs the doom syndicate is another diguised pilot episode, (a pilot episode to the Megamind Rules TV series, and it looks like more of the budget was spent on that show's theme song than on the story plot writing and animation of the episodes) not a sequel movie!!! @@joshuasebsebe1047 I know that you're joking about that, because it's clear that a live-action remake of that movie would just result in contiuing to hurt that franchise. Especially with the woke stuff that would likely be put into it, and how true it is that with animation the possibilities are endless of what different make-believe things that that studio could think of choosing between when they were deciding what the characters in the original version would look like and what they would be shown doing, compared to how many of those things there are, that human actors can't copy when acting as those fictional characters. Also how much re-casting would have to happen, the character voices wouldn't sound the same as they previously did.
