@@SeaTactics You can devote yourself to another person but when your whole self identity is wrapped up entirely in another individual, it's certainly not a healthy or good way to live. Mikasa has realized this, like you said, and sees these same fatal flaws in herself and in Lousie who's repeating her own mistakes. Mikasa could show Louise a bit more empathy and compassion, true, but I think Mikasa is one of those types of people who have an emotional cup with only a limited amount of space to fill, and by that point in time it's overflowing due to Armin's words, Sasha's death, and Eren's betrayal.

I was so tired of people on twitter saying that her last scene with Louise was out of character. It's not. I'm glad there are some out there breaking this down about why it's actually in character for Mikasa.
Yeah, I don't think it was at all out of character for Mikasa. I think it's surprising coming from her, but Mikasa also threatened to kill Levi at one point as well. So I think it's safe to say Mikasa is somewhat very level headed mostly, but when she's not it's surprising. Plus, the scarf is a symbol of her love for Eren, why wouldn't she be a little miffed about that? Dying Yaegerist or not.

I loved Mikasa's character & still do but the scene when Mikasa took the scarf from Louise hurt me because it shows Mikasa's true robotic & uncaring character when Eren rejects her or dies. Louise was on her death bed showing admiration for Mikasa, speaking what could very well be her last words to her hero & Mikasa is just like "give me my scarf", takes it, & leaves without showing any concern for someone dieing. To make things worse she not only leaves, but leaves in the middle of her sentence because she doesn't care. She doesn't know how to care without Eren. All she cares/lives for is Eren & her character that we've seen to this point is a product of that... Without Eren, she is a shell of her former self, robotic & uncaring with no purpose or way to think for herself. We are finally seeing her for who she truly is. Unlike other characters she's still a blank canvas yet to discover herself because she's been projecting Eren's canvas from the moment he saved her. To be clear, I'm not disliking this from a writing perspective but from an eye opening perspective on my part as I didn't realize this about Mikasa's character until this & this sets up great character development for her as we get witness how she finally becomes her own person developing feelings of her own outside of Eren & moving forward.

The raid on liberio was correct as doing nothing will result in paradise getting invaded all Eldains killed or captured for human experimentation like it or not the military in Paradise island was going to let Marley invade their shores I mean they didn’t have a plan for the situation of dealing with Marley, then they act so surprised that such a thing happened.
And yet Louise's presence in the story is confirmation that Mikasa's feelings towards Eren can be the genuine contents of her heart, and not Ackermann-induced mind-control. So in the same moment, getting her scarf back made perfect sense. It was as much a message to her as EreMika shippers.

Mmm Eren never ignored Mikasa, he always loved her and did everything to protect her, and she always protected him cause he was her family... while Mikasa never knew Louise, saying that they're alike is kinda superficial level of paralleling since Mikasa stands against everything that Louise is, she's not a yeagerist, she's not a blind follower, she always put Eren in place when he was rude esp to Armin, she was her own person and she will choose to do things on her own will..

I completely disagree that it's "superficial". Louise is pretty much a broken mirror of Mikasa. Shes Mikasa if she went down the wrong path. It's very clear how these characters are paralleled to each other and to say it's "superficial" does a disservice to both of the characters as well as Isayama's vision.
The comparison is not between Louise and Mikasa as she is, it is between Louise and the "slave" Mikasa that Eren talks about when he says he hates her. Both are blind followers doing anything to please their heroes and have no autonomy of their own. Mikasa realizes this and wants to prove Eren wrong, it's also because she sees this version of herself in Louise that she reacts with such disdain in their final meeting.

Wow, this video bring later a whole new light to what I believed was the most irrelevant character I’ve ever seen haha. Louise does really mirror Mikasa. I also agree that Mikasa living entirely for Eren has a really good payoff now, character/story wise. I can truly feel her pain and uncertainty.

i’ve seen a lot of comments about Mikasa being this villain type for the way she acted so i thought i’d make a comment from a different perspective. Just because Louise idolizes Mikasa doesn’t mean Mikasa needs to have any connections with her or act like the Mikasa that Louise has made up in her mind. Mikasa acted as she usually does to anyone she isn’t close with and to act nice to someone frankly speaking she just doesn’t care about would be just as weird and out of character to me, just because Louise is dying doesn’t obligate Mikasa to be someone she isn’t. And in aot it would be very difficult to care about every person because so many people die. Mikasa only has room to care about her friends and thats it, not some girl who idolizes her and lives to mirror her. but thats just my opinion ofc
You're not wrong in saying Mikasa doesn't have to care about Louise, but denying her any sort of final words (especially in her deathbed) isn't a sign of growth for Mikasa's relationship with Eren, as her and Louise's share a lot of similarities (but not completely). Mikasa in the very least should've spared even a small moment to hear Louise out. She isn't a villain in any case, but she doesn't seem to react to this situation at all which leads me to ask: why bring Louise up in the first place if it won't mean anything to Mikasa? It's a part of the story where the pre-established character is put in an uncomfortable situation and instead of gaining any sort of knowledge or change in their mindset, they brush it off as if it meant nothing at all. If an aspect of the story brings nothing new to its characters or doesn't help them grow in any way, it's just wasted space.

@@missfortune3123 exactly, Mikasa's change is so slow as well that I needed a video to make me realize she was getting character development, Mikasa cares for mainly Eren and hopefully that setup pays off in the next few episodes or I'll be heated with the amount of time they wasted on the Louise plot. She doesn't even bother to care for the safety of others or herself like when Jean saved her I never heard a thank you because she was too focused on Eren's safety or something.

There is no reason to believe she went everyday to his grave tho😭. Remember when Sasha died? All of them left and Mikasa stayed at her grave?? Explaining how Louise is a mirror of Mikasa is an entryway to explaining how Mikasa is a mirror of Ymir Fritz. Mikasa existing for the sole purpose of existing for someone else, and chasing after an idealized version of someone else is exactly why Ymir Fritz continued to serve, and to love, King Fritz, even after death, and their story being about “Breaking free of the shadow of a person who defines you” all wraps around to Ymir in an extremely wrapped up way
I believe that complaint (which I also made when first watching the first season) is how she will go wherever Eren goes to protect him. To me, it made feel less like "Mikasa Ackermann" and more like "Eren's Bodygaurd who will always protect him no matter how he treats her."
Well, it makes sense... think about how she witnessed her family get murdered & she herself was abused. This was a traumatic event for her at a very young age. She loved her family but they were taken away from her. Fast forward to her being a scout & when asked, what does she say Eren is to her... "Family"... she fears loosing Eren who she considers her family the same way she lost her family(parents). This terrifies her & makes her want to stay close to Eren at all times because it puts her at ease knowing 1000% that he's ok, & because she's strong she trusts & believes in her ability to protect him if needed. The trauma of loosing her family causes her to be overly protective of Eren... From the moment Eren saves her he has been her purpose & reason for living despite how he may treat her.
Hasn't that been the case since the beginning of the anime? So why is it suprising to you'll that she does it again? Her being Eren's bodyguard is part of what makes her Mikasa Ackerman.

One thing that I've always found interesting about Louise and Mikasa is they are Parallel's of each other. They both had a hero who came in to there rescue them. Who they wanted to follow the difference with Mikasa and Louise though is that Mikasa actually got to grow up with and know Eren. They had an actual strong bond. Meanwhile Louise never had a chance to actually get to know Mikasa and when she did she didn't try to really get to know her she mainly projected on what she thought Mikasa would do without actually getting to know her as a person.
I never disliked Mikasa, I always though she was a badass but as a character the best I thought about her was meh. Then we get to the episode where Eren explains the "Ackermann gene" and I was like woah. I loved the fact of there being canon explanation of why a character has always been kind of bland. I felt the same with Bertholdt, who could be seen as a bit of a boring character but then you realize that was the point of his arc and probably the reason Marley gave him the power of being a walking nuke. You would want that kind of power to be in the hands of someone that is the exact opposite of independent.
There is a funny thing about the ackerman gene and anyone who remembers Erwins death will acknowledge it instantly in the larger scheme but that would be spoilers.

This should be obvious since ackerman line turned against king fritz when he went eldian extinction mode. Levi chose armin over Erwin despite erwin supposedly being his key person. The story in the past is full of breadcrums that the ackerman affection is not true. And in the finale it is confirmed as such and eren was trying to distance her from him by trying to convince her that her feelings for her were not legitimate

I wish Mikasa wouldve given her more time of day because they would have been good for eachother. all louise needed was a little guidance. and Mikasa just needed a girl friend sheesh.
I will say that could it be that Mikasa being so cold to Louise is that L "betrayed" and be "portraited" the opposite of what that scarf means to M. For Mikasa ,it's the symbol of that kindness and warnness that Eren gave her. But what Louise had done is going against it, using violence and power to destroy everything she knows is "devilish". Which also links back to where L and M are totally ignored that the fact their hero are also the demon in themselves.
If Mikasa was obsessed with Eren, she wouldn’t have been able to kill him. She simply loves him unconditionally, but she didn’t let her love for him hold her back from her duty to save humankind. That’s not obsession in anyway.
Your point makes sense if Louise wasn't on the verge of death, But in reality Mikasa took the scarf from a girl who was critically wounded and had very low chances of surviving. It’s a different situation though because mikasa is firstly exhausted her childhood best friend is literally crushing the earth and she has so much on her plate right now so it can’t be compared to some random celebrity going to the hospital plus Mikasa saved Louise twice from dying so I think she’s done more than enough for her

Mikasa isn't a good person it's as simple as that, she doesn't care about anyone who doesn't agree with her viewpoint or is opposed to her, she never hesitated to kill anyone that stands in her way and she's showed no mercy nor emotions multiple times in the past. The scene where Mikasa takes her scarf back from Louise, when she walks away, IN THE ANIME Mikasa holds her scarf on her right hand, while on the MANGA she holds the scarf on her left hand. Another instance where the animators reverse the positions of objects or characters on the anime, just like the first episode, or when Zeke and Eren meet in Paths. 👀
Mikasa showed empathy to Gabi. TO GABI. She did it at the point of the story when Gabi still called them devils, and directly called dead Sasha a dirty witch in Nicolo's restaurant. But to a dying, lost, mislead soul, who cherishes your bond with Eren, who understands how you feel, who followed your mistakes, she shows none. I won't accept any explanation for this. No "realization" makes sense for this. It would be more of a realization if she said something to Louise about it. Walking away with a blank expression makes it seems like you did not understand anything that happened and only have a thought of "My fucking scarf! Finally bitch!"

@@siegeds2221 I see your points and I honestly can't outright reject them because so much of the characters in aot are based on interpretation unless the person actually says it. Mikasa has said in season 2 that there's only so many ppl she can care about. This includes the circle of friends which she is shown supporting. So it's easy to see her as cold and she is She's def attached or in love w Eren but I don't think it's to a robot degree, at least yet. As well Eren has subtilty shown awareness of Mikasas feelings and somewhat returns it, but he was also focused on his goals. It's a twisted but not intentionally twisted relationship for sure. Both are equally damaged. But I see the points you made as well

Watching this video because I had no clue who was that girl (Louise) during scarf scene with Mikasa. My guess, the real reason why many didn't remember who she was is because she's rare appearings were mixed with weekly periods of release of new episodes combined with long pause between part 1 & 2 of the final season. Hell, on my first view of AOT years ago, I decided to see manga because I wanted to see the story ahead, & when Sasha was killed by Gabi, I had no emotion whatsoever cuz I didn't remember who Sasha was lol only when I decided to rewatch all AOT in one breath, few years after that manga moment, I realized why so many were unhappy with Sasha's death when I was not. I guess that's the problem of third or secondary characters for a series, the weekly releases with long pauses make lose that touch of value or importance to them.
Honestly it’s amazing 2 women chained to their love for their men yimir and mikasa and eren both is hurting and trying to free them both in his own warped way (eren constantly using the Titan powers and of course freeing yimir from that and then mikasa and protecting her while treating her coldly)

If that was Levi interacting with Louise, he would have not left her on her deathbed hating her. I'm almost certain he would have comforted her and possibly even given her his cravat. Amazing how Levi was seen as edgy in Season 1 and ends up being one of the kindest and selfless people in the entire series. Whilst Mikasa becomes really ruthless and having a heart of stone, all because she can't let go of Eren. She's a horribly written character.

All she cares/lives for is Eren & her character that we've seen to this point is a product of that... Without Eren, she is a shell of her former self, robotic & uncaring with no purpose or way to think for herself. We are finally seeing her for who she truly is. Unlike other characters she's still a blank canvas yet to discover herself because she's been projecting Eren's canvas from the moment he saved her. To be clear, I'm not disliking this from a writing perspective but from an eye opening perspective on my part as I didn't realize this about Mikasa's character until this & this sets up great character development for her as we get witness how she finally becomes her own person developing feelings of her own outside of Eren & moving forward.

Louise took Mikasa's scarf bc she's gay. I have no proof of this, but also if a cute girl were to leave he scarf behind after leaving an imperssion on me, I would take it to try and give it back too. If she didn't want it anymore, I'd ask to have it too. The similarities match up
While we can all agree what Mikasa did was way too harsh/cold but at the same time considering all the shit that went down in the span of few days? She was at her lowest point of her life. Emotionally exhausted to say the least like many others. I am not trying to excuse her actions by any means. But it does explain her behavior in that scene to some extent. It's a bit similar to how Connie went crazy for a while just after the Rumbling. (When he tried to kill Falco)
I think Louise was intended to be a mirror for Mikasa and a possible foreshadowing of what Mikasa’s fate will be in the story. Louise died still blindly devoting herself to someone who didn’t reciprocate in the same way. I suspect that could allude to how Mikasa could die later. Currently Mikasa’s main struggle is whether she can let their friends kill Eren and not step in and protect him. As of part 3 cour 1, she still has the scarf 🧣 so….. let’s just say she’s not inspiring much confidence in me over this at the moment 😅

Mikasa has realized this, like you said, and sees these same fatal flaws in herself and in Lousie who's repeating her own mistakes.
Mikasa could show Louise a bit more empathy and compassion, true, but I think Mikasa is one of those types of people who have an emotional cup with only a limited amount of space to fill, and by that point in time it's overflowing due to Armin's words, Sasha's death, and Eren's betrayal.

I completely disagree that it's "superficial". Louise is pretty much a broken mirror of Mikasa. Shes Mikasa if she went down the wrong path. It's very clear how these characters are paralleled to each other and to say it's "superficial" does a disservice to both of the characters as well as Isayama's vision.
The comparison is not between Louise and Mikasa as she is, it is between Louise and the "slave" Mikasa that Eren talks about when he says he hates her. Both are blind followers doing anything to please their heroes and have no autonomy of their own. Mikasa realizes this and wants to prove Eren wrong, it's also because she sees this version of herself in Louise that she reacts with such disdain in their final meeting.

Wow, this video bring later a whole new light to what I believed was the most irrelevant character I’ve ever seen haha. Louise does really mirror Mikasa. I also agree that Mikasa living entirely for Eren has a really good payoff now, character/story wise. I can truly feel her pain and uncertainty.

Just because Louise idolizes Mikasa doesn’t mean Mikasa needs to have any connections with her or act like the Mikasa that Louise has made up in her mind. Mikasa acted as she usually does to anyone she isn’t close with and to act nice to someone frankly speaking she just doesn’t care about would be just as weird and out of character to me, just because Louise is dying doesn’t obligate Mikasa to be someone she isn’t. And in aot it would be very difficult to care about every person because so many people die. Mikasa only has room to care about her friends and thats it, not some girl who idolizes her and lives to mirror her. but thats just my opinion ofc
You're not wrong in saying Mikasa doesn't have to care about Louise, but denying her any sort of final words (especially in her deathbed) isn't a sign of growth for Mikasa's relationship with Eren, as her and Louise's share a lot of similarities (but not completely). Mikasa in the very least should've spared even a small moment to hear Louise out.
She isn't a villain in any case, but she doesn't seem to react to this situation at all which leads me to ask: why bring Louise up in the first place if it won't mean anything to Mikasa? It's a part of the story where the pre-established character is put in an uncomfortable situation and instead of gaining any sort of knowledge or change in their mindset, they brush it off as if it meant nothing at all. If an aspect of the story brings nothing new to its characters or doesn't help them grow in any way, it's just wasted space.

Mikasa existing for the sole purpose of existing for someone else, and chasing after an idealized version of someone else is exactly why Ymir Fritz continued to serve, and to love, King Fritz, even after death, and their story being about “Breaking free of the shadow of a person who defines you” all wraps around to Ymir in an extremely wrapped up way

I believe that complaint (which I also made when first watching the first season) is how she will go wherever Eren goes to protect him. To me, it made feel less like "Mikasa Ackermann" and more like "Eren's Bodygaurd who will always protect him no matter how he treats her."
Well, it makes sense... think about how she witnessed her family get murdered & she herself was abused. This was a traumatic event for her at a very young age. She loved her family but they were taken away from her.
Fast forward to her being a scout & when asked, what does she say Eren is to her... "Family"... she fears loosing Eren who she considers her family the same way she lost her family(parents). This terrifies her & makes her want to stay close to Eren at all times because it puts her at ease knowing 1000% that he's ok, & because she's strong she trusts & believes in her ability to protect him if needed.
The trauma of loosing her family causes her to be overly protective of Eren... From the moment Eren saves her he has been her purpose & reason for living despite how he may treat her.

One thing that I've always found interesting about Louise and Mikasa is they are Parallel's of each other.
They both had a hero who came in to there rescue them. Who they wanted to follow the difference with Mikasa and Louise though is that Mikasa actually got to grow up with and know Eren. They had an actual strong bond. Meanwhile Louise never had a chance to actually get to know Mikasa and when she did she didn't try to really get to know her she mainly projected on what she thought Mikasa would do without actually getting to know her as a person.
I never disliked Mikasa, I always though she was a badass but as a character the best I thought about her was meh. Then we get to the episode where Eren explains the "Ackermann gene" and I was like woah. I loved the fact of there being canon explanation of why a character has always been kind of bland.
I felt the same with Bertholdt, who could be seen as a bit of a boring character but then you realize that was the point of his arc and probably the reason Marley gave him the power of being a walking nuke. You would want that kind of power to be in the hands of someone that is the exact opposite of independent.
There is a funny thing about the ackerman gene and anyone who remembers Erwins death will acknowledge it instantly in the larger scheme but that would be spoilers.

And in the finale it is confirmed as such and eren was trying to distance her from him by trying to convince her that her feelings for her were not legitimate

For Mikasa ,it's the symbol of that kindness and warnness that Eren gave her. But what Louise had done is going against it, using violence and power to destroy everything she knows is "devilish". Which also links back to where L and M are totally ignored that the fact their hero are also the demon in themselves.

Mikasa didn't like Louis because Louis reminded her about her obsession to Eren. Same story, Louis liked Mikasa as Mikasa helped her when she's child. Deep inside Mikasa hated the fact that she can't stop thinking about and idolizing Eren.

Mikasa showed empathy to Gabi. TO GABI. She did it at the point of the story when Gabi still called them devils, and directly called dead Sasha a dirty witch in Nicolo's restaurant. But to a dying, lost, mislead soul, who cherishes your bond with Eren, who understands how you feel, who followed your mistakes, she shows none. I won't accept any explanation for this. No "realization" makes sense for this. It would be more of a realization if she said something to Louise about it. Walking away with a blank expression makes it seems like you did not understand anything that happened and only have a thought of "My fucking scarf! Finally bitch!"

This is made clear in season 1 when she literally gave up on living because she thought Eren was dead & the ONLY thing that kept her fighting to continue living was the memory of EREN telling her to fight.
I loved Mikasa's character & still do but the scene when Mikasa took the scarf from Louise hurt me because it shows Mikasa's true robotic & uncaring character when Eren rejects her or dies.
Louise was on her death bed showing admiration for Mikasa, speaking what could very well be her last words to her hero & Mikasa is just like "give me my scarf", takes it, & leaves without showing any concern for someone dieing. To make things worse she not only leaves, but leaves in the middle of her sentence because she doesn't care. She doesn't know how to care without Eren.
All she cares/lives for is Eren & her character that we've seen to this point is a product of that... Without Eren, she is a shell of her former self, robotic & uncaring with no purpose or way to think for herself. We are finally seeing her for who she truly is. Unlike other characters she's still a blank canvas yet to discover herself because she's been projecting Eren's canvas from the moment he saved her.
To be clear, I'm not disliking this from a writing perspective but from an eye opening perspective on my part as I didn't realize this about Mikasa's character until this & this sets up great character development for her as we get witness how she finally becomes her own person developing feelings of her own outside of Eren & moving forward.

Watching this video because I had no clue who was that girl (Louise) during scarf scene with Mikasa. My guess, the real reason why many didn't remember who she was is because she's rare appearings were mixed with weekly periods of release of new episodes combined with long pause between part 1 & 2 of the final season. Hell, on my first view of AOT years ago, I decided to see manga because I wanted to see the story ahead, & when Sasha was killed by Gabi, I had no emotion whatsoever cuz I didn't remember who Sasha was lol only when I decided to rewatch all AOT in one breath, few years after that manga moment, I realized why so many were unhappy with Sasha's death when I was not. I guess that's the problem of third or secondary characters for a series, the weekly releases with long pauses make lose that touch of value or importance to them.

If that was Levi interacting with Louise, he would have not left her on her deathbed hating her. I'm almost certain he would have comforted her and possibly even given her his cravat. Amazing how Levi was seen as edgy in Season 1 and ends up being one of the kindest and selfless people in the entire series. Whilst Mikasa becomes really ruthless and having a heart of stone, all because she can't let go of Eren. She's a horribly written character.

I think Louise was intended to be a mirror for Mikasa and a possible foreshadowing of what Mikasa’s fate will be in the story. Louise died still blindly devoting herself to someone who didn’t reciprocate in the same way. I suspect that could allude to how Mikasa could die later. Currently Mikasa’s main struggle is whether she can let their friends kill Eren and not step in and protect him. As of part 3 cour 1, she still has the scarf 🧣 so…..
