If I recall correctly, when Nine Inch Nails heard this rendition of the song, they were like "damn, guess this is his song now." There's just something about hearing this old man on a guitar singing this sad song that no one else could capture. Rest in peace, Johnny Cash.

Trent Reznor was skeptical at first because he thought it was some kind of gimmick, but he also acknowledged that he was in a difficult place at that point in time, having a hard time accepting his own identity as a person, as a musician, the impact of his legacy through his music... and then JC did this and made him "understand the power that music actually has over people"
This song meant two different things to each of them. To Trent it was written from the perspective of a young person who is on the edge of a downward spiral into destruction, but JC sang it from the perspective of an old man who lived that destruction and was now at the end of his life, using the same words to literally say goodbye.
Trent Reznor said he didnt understand the full impact of what JC and Rick Rubin were trying to do until he saw the video, the elemental "juxtaposition" etc. He said "I remember where I was when I wrote that," he was in a bad place, and that seeing an icon like JC take meaning that deep from something he had written as a confused and lonely kid gave him a purpose in life again.

This song just about sums it up, for me. In regards to, how I reflect on, my broken life.
What wasn't expected, what was, what did become, and what is. Really brings it all together, doesn't it? For me, it does. Being a tad selfish here; however, I feel blessed to have found this song.
Very impressed by the reviews from other music artists, especially NIN.

Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) penned the song at the time of severe depression; hence the song originally describes heroin dependence & self-inflicted violence. However, Cash's rendition executes a special interpretation based solely on who is singing the song. Cash sang “Hurt” as a man who was nearing his death.

It’s convenient to believe in heaven. Think about it. What do you have to lose? You don’t have to be religious to accept the thought that your loved ones are waiting for you. Only stubbornly holding onto to your disbelief is what’s holding you back. If there’s nothing after death then why does it matter if you believe in heaven while you’re alive? It won’t matter in the end. Tell yourself a pretty “lie” to cope. How many lies did you believe until you found out the truth? At least this “lie” is beneficial

    Lyrics:
    I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
    I focus on the pain
    The only thing that's real
    The needle tears a hole
    The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
    But I remember everything
    What have I become?
    My sweetest friend
    Everyone I know goes away
    In the end
And you could have it all
    My empire of dirt
    I will let you down
    I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of thorns
    Upon my liar's chair
    Full of broken thoughts
    I cannot repair
    Beneath the stains of time
    The feelings disappear
    You are someone else
    I'm still right here
    What have I become?
    My sweetest friend
    Everyone I know goes away
    In the end
And you could have it all
    My empire of dirt
    I will let you down
    I will make you hurt
    If I could start again
    A million miles away

Pain isn’t something you can get rid of easily, neither are loved ones. We have these connections and these relationships to make ourselves feel more alive, and when we lose people, we lose parts of ourselves. Its nature, its who we are as humans. Keep the ones you truly care about, as in all sense of the terms, they’re a part of you on the inside.

9 inch nail's was a song of vulnerability when young, a suicide note in a song

@@raylordofkhalah28 basically yeah. Though, NIN's version comes with the added baggage of being part of a larger concept album with its own story and characters. Though it could be seen as a suicide note, it's more an aftermath of a suicide than anything. As the character kills himself in the song prior on the album.

I’m an opioid addict, I have two kids I haven’t seen in two years and it’s not by choice. My mom died years ago and I have no clue where my dad is. I tried so hard growing up not end up a piece of shit, but it happened. I’ve gotten clean before and I still didn’t get to see them. Every time I hear this song I just look at the sky and ask whoever is up there to take me. Loneliness and not being able to see them makes me want to die.
