If I recall correctly, when Nine Inch Nails heard this rendition of the song, they were like "damn, guess this is his song now." There's just something about hearing this old man on a guitar singing this sad song that no one else could capture. Rest in peace, Johnny Cash.
Trent Reznor was skeptical at first because he thought it was some kind of gimmick, but he also acknowledged that he was in a difficult place at that point in time, having a hard time accepting his own identity as a person, as a musician, the impact of his legacy through his music... and then JC did this and made him "understand the power that music actually has over people" This song meant two different things to each of them. To Trent it was written from the perspective of a young person who is on the edge of a downward spiral into destruction, but JC sang it from the perspective of an old man who lived that destruction and was now at the end of his life, using the same words to literally say goodbye. Trent Reznor said he didnt understand the full impact of what JC and Rick Rubin were trying to do until he saw the video, the elemental "juxtaposition" etc. He said "I remember where I was when I wrote that," he was in a bad place, and that seeing an icon like JC take meaning that deep from something he had written as a confused and lonely kid gave him a purpose in life again.
I really love the line "My empire of dirt" it shows that we spend so much time getting material possessions but in the end they just go away and you realize it's not what matters

Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
What have I become?

And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I'm still right here
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all

I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again

I would keep myself
I would find a way

He's true Legend! Epic song! ❤
Definitely a beautiful song rip Mr Johnny cash
You could play this song over a "Benny Hill" sketch, and it'd still make it cry- worthy...
Hugh, you still have time.....to come back.
the one song everyone can relate to
I’m an opioid addict, I have two kids I haven’t seen in two years and it’s not by choice. My mom died years ago and I have no clue where my dad is. I tried so hard growing up not end up a piece of shit, but it happened. I’ve gotten clean before and I still didn’t get to see them. Every time I hear this song I just look at the sky and ask whoever is up there to take me. Loneliness and not being able to see them makes me want to die. I miss Olivia and rowen, I hope you guys are okay, I love you both very much
dont let them down. keep trying. keep pushing. throw yourself out there and start doing activities to keep you completely occupied. remind yourself everyday that its for them and yourself. you need to understand that you’ll see them
never give up pray to God for strength and submit to him in repentance
You may have to wait until they are adults and can make their own choice. Make that possibility worth it for them. Even if it takes longer than you hope for. Keep making it worth it for them. That love will one day make a difference.
This version is relatable. Thank you Mr. Cash. God keep you.
That opening line is the most punk thing I've ever heard. It is like Cagney embracing his own destruction with an ironic, gleeful grin on his face in 'White Heat':" Made it, Ma...top of the world"!
Thanks for posting this 🔥
Trent Reznor version was good but this song actually fits Johnny Cash perfectly.
Trent likes Johnny's verison better
@@connornoiles2447 we know that but Trent still deserves credit
@@ericdravis815 lets just agree both are good
a fukin legend speaking the truth of a musicians life and life of others that deal with pain
For sure
Miss you grandpa and grandma
I’m going through a painful separation with my wife right now and listening to this just puts in words how I’m feeling at the current moment
You should never become attached to anything on this planet .ie cars, money, houses, girlfriends, boyfriend's etc. The list goes on. Nothing is ever ours. Everything on this planet in our lives is temporary. Remember that and stay strong brother. It will pass.

Johnny Cash m'a sauvé la vie.
There was no god, no family, no friends at that time.
I was on my own. Wanderin' and wonderin' why.
He alone was there as my only comfort.
I owe Monsieur Johnny Cash a Big debt.
I love this song Reminder of my farther and deer friend who I love so much
*dear*
Beautiful cover
When he closes the piano lid, it speaks volumes.
Rip to both Johnny Cash and Eddie Guerrero ❤ 🕊️
Ain't no grave.

I have grown old ...... This is for me...
This song for some reason makes me think of my daughter, and not in a good way. I feel like I've failed her in so many ways. I want her to do better in life than me, in every way possible. I hope she does. I hope she makes me proud.
That was my story for 22 years , now i am ok. It as been 20 years so far.
What a voice Seamus from Ireland 15:26pm 27/05/22
Funny how it's even a NIN song. This is so essentially Johnny's nobody can remember it as anything else. His whole life was encapsulated in these lyrics. God bless Mr Cash and Trent Reznor for this gift.
The story of my life 😢
I think of the lyrics "what have I become?" When I eat too much junk food. What a relatable song!
Rip johnny cash:( best singer to this day
Besides Kanye, yah
@@trippiered3674 johnny cash is better then him
@@Roger-hp1yg they're about equal. Grievances aside both have amazing music that's not matched by anyone else
this song went to #33 on the modern rock charts in 2003!!!
This is a song for when you feel sorry for yourself.
Some people live with a pain they have caused, and see death as an easy way out, but choose life and choose to live with the pain and regret, it only seems fair.. I know I do.
