    Very interesting selection. I'll have to dig for a couple of these albums. I have 3 of them. My first exposure to vibes was Margie Hyams with the George Shearing Quintet, then Lionel Hampton and Red Norvo on old 78's. i grew up in the UK so I saw Victor Feldman a number of times live before he left for the States. Another great British vibes player was Bill Le Sage. I also had a couple of Terry Gibbs 78's. But being a bebop fan then it was 'Bags', I wore out my 78 of Dizzy Gillespie's 'The Champ', then fell in love with 'The Queen's Fancy' when the MJQ was formed. Great video! Thank you!

    My first was "Jazz Winds from a New Direction by Hank Garland released in 1961"
    A friend gave me a cassette tape with this album on one side and "Homer and Jethro Playing it Straight" on the other (which by the way is an excellent album for those guitarists that really want to learn how to play Sock Rhythm on Guitar!).
    Jazz Winds was Gary's first record I think. 17 years old?
    I got to meet him in Boston while tuning pianos at Berklee. I got to hand deliver his beat up set of vibes ( it was basically duct taped together and had all kinds of Home Depot wingnuts and stuff holding it together) to a Holiday Inn where he gave a solo concert. I was so in awe of him I was speechless and couldn't even tell him how influential his playing was to me. But he was very kind and sort of recognized my trepidation.
    I'm really Impressed that you know all the Basslines and Piano Voicings & if you could do a Hip Video explaining how you do that I would be very grateful. Thanks! Jack

      OK, a bit of an age gap!
      That's cool.
      I have Opus de Funk MJQ, plenty Gay Burton, other Victor Feldman albums.
      Not bad. Like the newer sounds you recommended and will investigate.
      I am more 60s/70s onwards so here's my 5:
      Cal Tjader - Night in Tunisia (Live)
      Bobby Hutcherson - Secrets of love
      Johnny Lytle - Mine
      Roy Ayers - Coca Butter
      Milt Jackson & Strings - Feelings, whole album.
      2 maybe's?
      Dave Pike - Why not
      Lionel Hampton - Flying Home
      Great channel. You have a new subscriber!

    Thank you for this video! I will have to check these out. My piano professor Kei Akagi recently hipped me to the 1968 Bobby Hutcherson album Total Eclipse. I highly recommend checking this album out, I’ve never heard a more flowing and brilliant solo on vibes than on the first track Herzog. Chick Corea is on keys and they also play his tune Matrix. Happened to score a copy of the vinyl for 14 bucks a few days ago, needless to say I was more than stoked!

    • @TimCollinsVibes
      @TimCollinsVibes  6 років тому +1

      Oh yeah- Total Eclipse is a great album - when I was studying it was out of print and really hard to get.. not the case any more though. I remember my teacher played me his recording of 'Matrix' from that record and it blew me away. The fact that Chick is on that record is also awesome.

    You’ve added some albums to my ‘ must hear list’. Let me mention a favourite Gary Burton album, Benny Rides Again, GRP. Great to hear him blowing those old Goodman standards, albeit, tastefully updated with Mulgrew Miller piano, Peter Erskine drums, John Patitucci bass, and amazing Eddie Daniels on clarinet (I also play clarinet, but not at that speed!).

    Thanks to make us discover some gems ! I knew only the Victor Feldman one. The Pyramid album of the MJQ made me fall in love with jazz at 7 years old, because of the sound of the vibraphone. I still can whisle the solo of Milt on the track Vendome, 48 years later !

    • @IRACEMABABU
      @IRACEMABABU 6 років тому

      Yes, Milt is the grandfather of modern vibraphone, no doubt. But a grandfather has children and grandsons... My prefered player actually is David Friedman. Walt Dickerson, Joe Locke, Tony Miceli, Ed Saindon, Tim Collins are not bad too...;o))

    • @TimCollinsVibes
      @TimCollinsVibes  6 років тому

      That's funny you mention David - I just saw him last night, in fact he used my vibraphone on a gig here in Munich. Joe Locke is amazing (he was my teaching in MSM), Tony Miceli and Ed are also both great. Tony I've met, Ed I've only interacted with on FB but those guys are doing great stuff with teaching as well. That last guy is a hack though, who ever heard of him ;)
      And WALT DICKERSON is truly unique.. talk about playing the vibes unlike anyone else.

    Hi Tim! I've been checking out Gary Burton's 98 "Like Minds" album. A must have for me. Corea, Holland, Metheny, and Haynes. Every track is great music. Also, Burton's 94 album "Face to Face" with Makoto Ozone is maybe not a must have but still a good resource for vibes. Blue Monk and Opus Half are particularly tasty tracks from that album. Ozone is seemingly precisely contrived in his "out-there"ness but undeniably great playing. Maybe that's just how he jams. Great channel here!!! Great educating!!! Don't stop!!! It looks like you're in Europe now but if you're ever touring the western US, we'd love to have you out to BYU.

    • @TimCollinsVibes
      @TimCollinsVibes  6 років тому +1

      Those are the old David Friedman mallets from malletech (the label has worn off). The new version of them is from Innovative Percussion now, and they are still a great mallet line. One of the best general mallets out there, and they last forever. I've been using those things for probably 10 years and they don't really show any signs of wearing down.

      Fair point- My favorite Tjader record is ‘Latin Concert’ (with the orange cover). I didn’t get into that until after i had already discovered all of these other records..as for Lionel Hampton, it’s hard to pick one because he has so many albums! His solo on “Dinah” with Benny Goodman Quartet blows my mind.

    Hey Tim, nice list, I definitely agree with you, all the records that you mentioned are pure gems for vibraphone players. I'm actually a big fan of Mr. Mainieri, so here is a suggestion of mine. Check out this live concert ua-cam.com/video/0_UU-4VK5T0/v-deo.html where Mike plays with a Scandinavian 4et. I know, it's not exactly a record just a UA-cam video (therefore I don't know whether this kind of material could be consider part of your list)....I especially like the moment between 03:07 to 03:17...Mike here plays such a cool, melodic passage. ...one of my favourite moments ever. Would be awesome to know your opinion! Thanks and keep doing these awesome videos buddy!
