  • At a symposium celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of James Madison, Drew McCoy discussed his many significant contributions to the nation's history, such as his defense of religious liberty, his role as architect and principal defender of the Constitution of the United States, his introduction of the legislation that produced the Bill of Rights, and his service as secretary of state (1801-1809) and president (1809 to 1817).
    Speaker Biography: Drew R. McCoy was educated at Cornell University (A.B. 1971) and the University of Virginia (M.A. 1973, Ph.D. 1976). He has taught American history at the University of Texas at Austin, Harvard University and, most recently, Clark University, where he is the Jacob and Frances Hiatt Professor of History. He is the author of two books, including "The Last of the Fathers: James Madison and the Republican Legacy" (1989), which was awarded the John H. Dunning Prize by the American Historical Association and the New England Historical Association Book Award.
