Really cool to see this. I knew there was talk of restoring service but I never knew they actually cleared the ROW. Kind of strange to go this far and then drop the whole thing. Hope someone gets the ball rolling again.
Even though a Railroad Track might be abandoned. It is always possible that It Might be put back into use again. Lots of abandon Tracks around the USA are starting to be put back into Service. a 3 mile track by me was abandoned in early 1930s. back in 2019 it was cleared of trees and brush and track repair was done to it. This year it is back in service after 70-/+ years out of service. I know over the years people who have houses that butt up to the track had brought in Dirt and covered the tracks up and put fence around making their yard bigger. I know a few people are pretty upset for loosing roughly 80 feet of yard.
Well that is the issue many of these lines are not abandoned, they just are not used! People buy a home 🏡 or build one on an adjacent lot do not do thier due diligence (the municipality that issues permits as well) and allows these curfuffles to happen then 🙄
@@wilfred8326 a Line is really only Truely Abandoned, When The Track is actually Removed. Otherwise Train Company could come in at any time at all, Repair what needs to be repaired, Do work and can start to Reuse the Tracks again. IE Can have Tracks that lead to a Desert Ghost Town. From the new track on Ferry St to Gold Medal Bakery can't be more than 2 miles. With so much more handling and transporting from the State Pier to the Bakery I would think this link up would be a top priority.
This begs the question. In 1985-7-ish when Conrail last serviced this far south, what was the issue with directly serving the Bakery? Did Conrail offer a significant discount to drey the flour etc 2 miles back and forth to get out of track maintenance 🤔 or did the bakery get a better rate from truckers at that time (or it was a different bakery company) that preferred 🚚, then after A period of time asked for Rail and Conrail said yes but Transload.... 🤷♂️
How much more products can be moved by train than by truck even into smaller communities.I believe we need the rail more than ever To bad so much has been lost
I would love to see that link reestablished! The bakery is thriving, and I don't know ANY time I drive up Bay St. when some tanker isn't pulling out. There would be a substantial cost savings in the long run as well as the road traffic reduction. Every time I drive up Broadway, I keep looking to see if anything new is going on up the line past the Tipsy Toboggan.
Cool! Obviously they've got their work cut out for them to restore these tracks on this portion of the ROW. Were these tracks last used by Conrail before abandonment? I bet that they'll probably rehabilitate these tracks and lay "stick rail", just so they could make these tracks passable again to give Gold Medal Bakery direct rail service. I'm thinking that a "team track" or a siding track would be have to be installed on Gold Medal Bakery's property if I had to guess. Keep up the good work, stay safe and God bless.
Would a million dollars a mile be a good estimate for a class one rebuild with stick rail? Thanks for all your many update videos on the South Coast rail. Much appreciated.
Gold Medal is playing smart. It's going to take time and money. To get the line full and running. But it makes more common sense. To use railcars instead of trucks. I look at the cost. One truck load of grain. And other items is so much a ton. Plus cost of fuel. And if the truck breaks down. The line of supply is broken. With rail car. Half the cost. And 4 times the items. Instead of having 4 or 5 trucks going back and forth. 3 Or 4 trains. 3 days a week does twice the job. And again half the cost too.
Seems like the best way to redo that line would be to pull up the rails, spread sub-roadbed and level, install new track and ballast on top of groundcloth. Get the track a little higher up as there seems to be a major water drainage problem along the line.
Keep me updated and when they've made more progress removing all the brush and debris on the train tracks and have replaced all the rails and ties with brand new rails and ties and the rails will go behind the bakery once again and trains will use it
It is too bad that the mothballed trackage hasn't been restored to service. I would guess that, after clearing the overgrowth and inspecting the line, the ROI of rehabilitation wasn't cost-effective.
It is state owned r.o.w. and state trackage. Right now I think Mass Coastal has thier hands full will helping restore South Coast Rail. Much of this track will be new and perhaps used ties of good quality and the better quality rails being replaced will find there way here.
Looks like Some of the Track can still be used. However, it all have to be removed, graded, cleared of brush. New Ballast of course. The Cost? How Much? Will the Residents care if this rail line is reactivated? Some of the Abodes look a lot newer than the tracks.
You do not have to go to that extent for an industry lead track. Yes it's going to need some ties ( a minimum of replacing 1 out of every 5), but they do not need to rip everything up and start over.
Myself, I was saddened to see the Northern Line torn up, the track that connects Concord, NH to White River Junction, VT. Back then, Guilford Rail System wanted to keep both ends of this route. Today, the WRJ end of the old Northern Line, at West Lebanon, NH is used by the Claremont and Concord Railroad, a G&W holdings company.
On the yt CCRX site. They said new rail is $2,000 A stick. The rail foundry will buy back scrap rail if you have 125 or more sticks. Which i would imagine would get companies better price than scrap dealers. Hopefully much of that rail can be reused. Except that really twisted stuff .
Jeez, can't the bakery see they're missing out on such a heckuva bonus...?? If they send cars up the wonky tracks, imagine their cost savings on dough mixing alone!
@@SouthCoastRailVideos another reason? (Speculation) is that the state is working 💪 on the Fall River and New Bedford Commuter Rail restoration and any materials left over or salvaged might be alloted to this "2 mile extension 🤔"
It is so dismal to see abandoned railroad tracks looking so forlorn. Why must their fate always be a transformation into an accursed "rail trail" ??? Just say'n.
I agree that it can be dismal to see abandoned rail lines. But why are they abandoned? Lack of business, lack of customers, lack of passengers.. In this case, except for the bakery, there is no revenue to be had. From what I can see it's not very scenic to use as a tourist road either. I live 350 ft from a 3 mi stretch of CSAO trackage that hasn't seen a train in 9 years. There are four businesses along the line that used to use real service. 2 mi South of the last business this line has become a rail trail because there's no other source of revenue. Heading west the line used to connect with a now completely refurbished stretch of track that has been undergoing renovation since 2006. This work was completed 3 years ago and it still hasn't seen a train to head north and connect with North Jersey. That section of line is even sadder because it's practically new but now the weeds are starting to grow up between the rails again. I can't wait to hear a train blow for the crossing one day. So what I'm saying is rail trails have a purpose. Truly abandoned lines do not, unless there's a remote hope of restoring business. And I would surely like to see the restoration of the Lackawanna cut off in my lifetime.
I don't know if they plan to restore this line, as in upgrading the track/ties and so forth, but would it not be almost as easy just to remove the existing structure - start fresh?
See those new homes along the ROW? They are occupied by NIMBY's especially the house built ON the ROW! As the video's 2017 date and now being it's 2021 I'd guess it'll never get built. vince
Awesome, I noticed that many abandoned rail lines just get ripped up and turned into linear parks, a line being restored is just too good to see!!!
Really cool to see this. I knew there was talk of restoring service but I never knew they actually cleared the ROW. Kind of strange to go this far and then drop the whole thing. Hope someone gets the ball rolling again.
Always good to see the old rail lines being brought back to life
Always good to see lines brought back to life! 😀😀
Very cool to see more service coming back to the line!!
That's So Sad not bring those tracks back into service sure would have been nice to see Train's running on those Rails once again. Awesome video

Yes, last used by Conrail. There is a siding near the bakery but that would have to be rebuilt as well.
Thats going to be a whole heap of work getting that back in shape.
You are quite the wordsmith. Ouch - my eyeballs!!

That seems about right but it definitely could be done for cheaper than that depending on different factors

Did this restoration ever happen? I looked on Google maps and it still looks overgrown, just wondering

Takes a lot of money, and labor costs something alot of short lines don't have. Unless they can get a state grant .
Call in Post 10. He's a hydrologist and youtuber from MA who clears culverts for fun. He probably would make those drainage problems non-existent.
@@djhrecordhound4391 He seems to like clearing ones the beavers block up the most.

This the reason I hate when they remove rails. Once it is gone it’s gone

Atlantic Blvd. looked like the problem, any updates sir?
Unfortunately nothing to report at this time
Did they rebuild the line ? Can you give a update?
Nothing to update
Do.you think.they will rebuild the line
with the current political climate of Massachusetts, its got to be tough to restore track for any reason.
Massachusetts has been extremely rail friendly in recent years
Why on hold ?
They have to figure out who is going to pay

No reason to build the line. The railroad already has the business. It would just increase the costs for the same business.
There are more potential customers along the stretch but the issue was who was going to pay.

Rail is fine, starting fresh means more expense especially since it’ll be a slow speed freight track
I see that someone extended their property over the ROW, which is clear at 1:03-1:04. That will be problematic, since the line’s last use was in 1987.
The track curves along the fence but a tree branch is blocking it so not an issue.
