The wings of the Arrakeen ornithopter aren't powered by motors, they're actually powered by desert "oyster" muscles. They're removed from the shells and implanted into the thopter's mechanics. Then there's an electrical charge passed through the oyster muscle to make it "open" and "close" very fast. Which in turn causes the wing mechanisms to oscillate incredibly quickly. The shield wall not only protects from sand storms and sandworms but it also protects from Atomics (nuclear weapons), it resonates at the same frequency/wavelength as the atomic weapon produces, thus negating the effects of the blast. You're correct on thinking machines/AI's being outlawed. It's why the Ixian Confederacy is much maligned as far as the Butlerian Jihad goes that all the major houses comply with. Most Mentats are regular "humans" who have natural innate ability and undergo training within the Order of Mentats that was first formed by Gilbertus Albans. However, Mentats could be artificially created by cloning humans in Axolotl tanks. The Bene Tleilax did so with Duncan Idaho, Paul Atreides' swordmaster after he was killed in a battle on Arrakis. "Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind" But you CAN create a human mind in the likeness of a machine. These creations are called Gholas. This was done to try and subvert Paul Atreides by showing him they could create an exact equivalent of his dead wife Chani, but only if he abdicated his throne. Later on in God Emperor of Dune, Idaho reappeared as a series of gholas when Duke Leto II (Now God Emperor of the known Universe) ruled as a human-sandworm hybrid for 3,508 years. After the death of every ghola, Leto would have him replaced with a new one. 17:29 You are thinking of ground effect which affects lift more than speed. The higher you go the less dense the air thus the faster you go relative to ground speed.
@Tomographic One word - Ekranoplan. This Lun class GEV (Ground Effect Vehicle) was a failed Russian experiment that worked on the ground effect principle. It not only works over land, but also water. The thing was fracking MASSIVE. It was intended to serve as a large military transport and heavy duty warship, to deliver large amounts of troops, supplies and military hardware under the radar capabilities of foreign countries. The only problem was that it had NO altitude capability. If it got up to any decent height, the ground effect stopped working - causing it to crash due to it's bulk and the laws of aerodynamics. They also forgot to factor in hazard avoidance, like trees, buildings, mountains etc? You know, all those things that regular aircraft could fly over very easily.? It's now left to rot somewhere on the shores of the Caspian sea in Daghestan.
The higher you go, the higher the ground speed for the same indicated air speed due to air density. Ground effect is basically sitting on your own air cushion in laymen’s terms.
I just watched Dune part 1 for the first time ever yesterday and it was absolutely amazing. Should have watched it a long time ago and def ready for part 2. This video just makes it even better lol
I'm not so sure if there's ANY material known by human that would withstand the oscillation those gigantic wings generate but hey, anything is possible in a game! Not to mention this ornithopter is the coolest thing I've ever flown!
BTW when you are flying the most important thing is to be lined up straight with your intended lading place long before, or indeed as soon as you are able. Make a beeline for it and then slow down and land. Don't swing wide or high on your way there. :) The ghost showed you up on this point only.
Ground effect happens for both helicopters and planes. You can even see birds do it. Especially over water. Basically, the air under the wing has nowhere to go so it becomes extra compressed than normal creating almost a cushion of air under the wing. It causes very efficient flight which is why you see birds take advantage of it so much.
I've theorized (and seen from the flying) that using the afterburner with the rotors set to glide lets you obtain a higher top speed. It seems that drag is exponentially higher when you go faster that the speed that the engine wans to to push the orthnicopter. you top out around 547 using the wings for power but have made upwards of 570 on a burning glide.
The makes me really want a war thunder style game with a whole bunch of different fantasy vehicles like some kinda of war smash bros. Imagine riding one of these bad boys into battle along side a pelican and vertibird, on the ground a 40k tank and a fallen walker do battle. Cool shit
You can turn your rear towards the storm right before you land to pick-up pilot. Because you move so slow right before landing turning takes maybe 1 second but then when you go full hog you don't waste time on turning. Like this alone saves 5-6 seconds.
