When I was younger (around 13) i did an essay on mulan (as part of an english assignment and part of my essay stated and i qoute: "Mulan is so inspirational! In the song "I'll make a man out of you" when Shang tells Mulan to go home, he says "How could I make a man out of you?" The thing is he couldn't. Thats the important point. Mulan had to do it for herself, she had to believe that she could do it. She had to use all her resources to be a 'Man' (Which stood for being swift strong and mysterious in the movie) even if she was at a disadvantage. Plus she did it alone and she became better and surpaced the others, showing them what being a 'man' was. I'd like to add, its ironic how Mulan was the strongest 'man' even though she was female. Furthmore she truly made a 'man' of herself despite everyone giving up on her and giving a her a rough time. I love how she persevered when everything was against her, I always respect this character." However i wish i had pressed on how sexist the movie is, but i didn't see that to its full extent yet at that point. Especially the message she sends at the end of the movie which is basically that girls can be something but shouldn't and they should just fall in love with the first man that gives them attention and shouldn't send them packing no matter how badly the guy mistreated her in the past. Shan Yu's name is an alternative spelling of Chanyu the title given to Xiongnu leaders. Xiongnu were actually before the Huns so it's obvious Attila isn't even born yet in this movie's setting. The Chinese dub actually does call them Xiongnu. Probably just called them Huns in English because Hun is an easier word for the English audience to understand.
