I wish people understood that to do art you’re gonna have to go through a phase of not even liking what you draw. It might look wonky for a bit but the more you practice the more you improve.
I think what people dont know is that all artists had to overcome that one starting phase. I'm sure every artist has experienced that feeling of "I dont know how I'm supposed to draw this even if I tried!" It's one of the hurdles that all artists eventually overcome just from practicing and studying which makes them slowly understand the theories and fundamentals in an intuitive sense
Seriously! In one of my college art classes recently there were people saying they hadn’t practised in weeks… I gotta practice so frequently otherwise it looks like I’ve never held a pencil in my life lmao
Yeah. I’ve drawn almost every day for over ten years, largely dragons. People ask me how my dragons are so good. Pretty much every day, I either draw something dragon related or watch a video on drawing dragons
as a cartoonist, going into college i didn’t think model drawing would help me. one year later, i can say my anatomy in my art has significantly improved :) listen to him he’s right!!
Glad you were able to get good classes on that stuff, it really does make a difference. I remember in highschool I shared proko's anatomy for artists playlist with her, telling her i found it super helpfulbc i did. She was pretty adamant she didnt need jt

Same,my art teacher only allows us to draw with rulers and only from one perspective, with 3D objects always having a 45° angle.I know other perspectives and I drew with them.He said that I have to redraw the whole thing because it needs to be from one perspective only and that it would be unfair to others.I feel like he’s repressing me from drawing what I want
yes yes yes! My high school art teacher at the beginning of class every day would have a volunteer come up and sit in the middle of the room (desks were placed in an "o" shape so that reference could be placed in the middle of the room) we all got a charcoal stick and would have 1 minute to draw the gesture, and then 5 minutes to refine the forms. Most of our projects weren't figure drawing related, but he always had us practice drawing from a live model. I think that's probably the MOST valuable thing he ever taught me... aside from color theory that is.
Thank you thank you thank you! As an artist that has burnt myself out trying to immediately go in with perfect line work, you've reminded me how important this step is. And you being here to do it with us is so helpful to me!! Thank you❤
This is the most wholesome (and useful anf inspiring!) Channel on UA-cam. This channel has seriously helped me stay motivated on my art journey and I've learned so many great tips from Scott! Tysm for posting these. We need more people like him in this world!
“Just draw them. Every day” That’s what I’ve done for a solid 14 or so years and I’ve finally reached the point where I’m finally able to draw exactly how I imagine things to turn out It’s a great feeling, honestly. 100% worth every single bit of time and effort
Scott you are my hero. This was the point in my art journey that I kinda marooned. I was getting better at figure drawing but just haven't been able to get back in the habit of practicing them. But seeing you do it makes me wanna get right into it, and to hear that you did 3 hours a day in college? Yeah I got nothing to complain about when I have to take a 30 minute break every 30 minutes when I'm drawing, 30 on, 30 off to let my hands rest and my brain vent because it starts feeling like it's overheating.
I CANT stress this enough, Scott is basically our second father. Wether subscribed or not, he is like an art father. He’s kind, sweet and anything good. And it’s very inspiring that he wasn’t this nice before.
That is so true! I always said that I couldn't draw people. And when I tried, I really couldn't, so I almost never drew them. But about a year ago, I realised that I wanted to be able to draw people. I want them in my landscape or make old west scenes. So I started to practise. I'm still not where I want to be, but now I can say: I can draw people. Sometimes they still go horribly wrong, but it is getting much better! Watching your video's certainly helps! You helped me understand how I could draw a face, so thank you!
I love gesture drawing, possibly too much. I used to make a habit of drawing 60-90 seconds gestures every day. I haven't been that good about it in a long time, but it's still my favorite thing to do when I don't know what to draw.
Gosh!! I suddenly remember 3 hours of live drawing.. back in the day when we had so much time for stuff. Still I like to draw for a whole day sometime❤
Figure drawing is my favorite! I usually don't have a reference, just my imagination. I play with hairstyles, clothes, poses, sometimes scenes; it's great!
Glad you put this video out. Too many people want a trick to get good. In this perspective book I read, the author said, 1 part theory 50 parts practice. I always think about this when I'm drawing. You haven't seen the hours of practice professionals put into this craft before they got where they are. And all of them still do put just as much time into it now as they ever did.
This is amazing and itll help me so much, and its just 1 minute! I love love love love love your art Mr Scott, and thank you so much for your good advice and help ❤
*sniffs* alright scott! let's do this! let's consistently practice everyday!! ✊ I'm not great at drawing consistently but it's nice to learn this method and know that you and I, alongside others, are all on this little journey together!!
THANK YOU for advocating practice!! Not everything needs to be a 100% finished piece, nor should it be when you're learning and/or need to get back to basics!
He's absolutely right, when it comes to art or really anything the amount of time you train your body to do that thing the better you inevitably get at it. Watching or learning from those with more experience may help you along the way to better understand your craft but no one can make you good at something without you first putting in a lot of effort. Also if you take a long break from art sometimes (like me) your skills will turn to shit even though you remember all the things you no longer have that muscle memory and have to train it back.
so for any final fantasy 14 players out there that are also artists, try playing around in gpose, it helped me so much with learning how light interacts with objects due to how the gpose tool allows you to place spot lights anywhere around the 3D model of your character. i used to really struggle with how light hits the body and clothing and this fun thing i played around with in my fav game ended up helping my art ❤😂
This isn't strictly related to this video, but I just wanted to thank you for inspiring me to pick up art again :) A few years ago I got an awful comment on a painting I was really proud of, and I lost all motivation But I've been binging your videos lately and I've wanted to pick it up again, and now I've done two paintings in the past week! Thank you so much for helping me get past that hurdle just by making content that's kind and friendly :)
I have been drawing a lot since my last year of high school (8 years ago) by copying drawings and using a lot of reference. I am still not as good as I want but it's insane how much I improved this way. Practicing and references are the best hack !
Honestly, when many people ask for a hack, myself included, we're usually just asking for an efficient way to practise without wasting so much time with things that don't matter at the stage we're currently at.
I REALLY want to learn how to draw people, but I don’t like how my sketches and drawings come out, this is why I don’t do it a lot, because it is out of my comfort zone, but this video made once again want to try and deal with the hard things like human body😅 Thank you for the inspiration mr. Scott, have a good one))
I was practicing drawing dynamic poses and then this video popped up- funnily ironic x) Anyway, it actually helped me understand what direction I should approach, thank you! :D
I'm starting to get sick of people telling me I'm naturally born with talent , I'm not, I put alot of work into getting everything the best I can and have been doing it my whole life and I wish people would notice more
I know it's small but I've been feeling really low about my art, It's just not what I want it to be due to the anatomy and lack of character in the poses yet doing gestures on my own feels impossible. I struggle a lot with feeling like gestures are pointless and that I could just learn faster by sketching the whole pose without it but that always ends up stiff. That's how I felt earlier; I was just about to give up, call it a day and put my sketchbook up when I got this notification. It's silly but feeling like I'm drawing with someone helps keep me going even if it's just a minute of someone talking like this short. I hope to follow along and hopefully learn with these gestures knowing that you're doing them too.
This was my first question and I got the same answer and I was both relieved and disappointed at the same time. Relieved that I don’t have to learn difficult techniques and disappointed that there is no easier way to do it.
Back when I was a little kid and the first frozen movie had just come out, my school had this princess look alike dress up and pose at different parts of the campus.
