    Great Video! I have a 2004 Honda Odyssey with a bad one way clutch (sprag style) in its automatic transmission. When coming to a stop it sometimes doesn’t engage but I can get it going with putting the gear in low or 2nd manually. I’ve been driving like this for 1 month. How long do you think this one way clutch failure can last ? Will it get worse and ultimately fail ?

      1) yes it will eventually completely fail. When you put the transmission in Manual 1st or manual low the transmission engages the 1st hold clutch which bypasses the one way clutch (OWC). Manual low provides engine braking when going down hill with your food off the gas and it also prevents up-shifting on acceleration so you don't lose torque when going slowly up a steep hill. This is required if you have ever driven up steep hills like some of the streets in San Francisco. Depending on how bad the failure is and how much metal is put out from the failed OWC you might be able to drive like this for a while. If you always use low or manual 1st to take off you will reduce the load on the OWC and minimize the wear and metal dispersion throughout your transmission. You could extend the time before repair or replacement by always using manual 1st to take off from a stop.

      @@DrivelineMaster Thank you so much for the detailed explanation on this, finally I understand. When it first started acting up it would do it once every 2 weeks when sitting for awhile, now it does it every day and more when cold and it does it when warm too. I’m still chugging along with shifting to low gear at stops. I’ve even driven a 14 hour road-trip like this because on highway speeds the transmission shifts well with “drive” working.

    What happens if the sprag breaks? Do you lose all gears?

    • @DrivelineMaster
      @DrivelineMaster  6 місяців тому

      That really depends on the transmission and it's design. Some transmission will lose drive 1st gear but when placed in manual or low 1st it will drive away because they use another clutch or band for low 1st gear. Others may lose 2nd gear. There are too many transmission and design differences to comment on but normally at least 1 gear won't work up to multiple gears.

      Glad you know what caused your problem. Yes, that will cause a no gears at all issue.
